I'm currently reading Paul of Dune, which is one of the new books by Frank Herbert's son. Pretty good stuff, but it sort of seems like they're kicking a dead horse by bringing out more Dune books.

Have you heard Maudlin Of The Well's Part The Second? I never listened to anything outside symphonic or neo before that album, and now I love post rock, post metal, prog metal, tech/extreme prog metal, avant/RIO prog and many others.
Its free for download on their site, so I recommend you get it. Fantastic album, and nice and light on the avant elements.

Now this I like! But how is this going to get me into RIO? Some of it is not exactly conventional, but of the few avant-garde bands I heard, none of them sounded this beautiful or accesible. Thanks for the recommendation anyways.

After that album, I tracked down the rest of their albums, and their other albums are nearly extreme metal in parts. They got me into a lot of prog metal, which in turn got me into some other stuff like Sigur Ros, and a lot of drone based stuff, and from their I just started listening to everything really.

I didn't really mean it would get you into RIO, but I meant it was a good album to help broaden musical horizons. The band has also said that since their other albums are impossible to track down (there's a few promo copies on eBay for 80$-ish, two of which I bought) they don't mind if you download them illegally.

Part The Second is my top album of this year for sure!

Its much more piano based, but it falls into the same realm as motW (post metal/experimental) and has pretty high ratings around here. That one is also a definite 5* from me!

motW is definately an aqcuired taste, but for a free album you pretty much can't go wrong.

One of my top 5 for the year. Thumbs Up

I disagree, there are a lot of free albums that are terrible.

Obviously free does not neccessarily equal good. I meant that for virtually nothing, a free download means nothing to you if you don't like it, and if you do enjoy it, it is worth something. No?

I'm also considering uploading a SWEET GUITAR SOLO to youtube (I do not know how to play guitar).

Part the Second is my second favorite of this year.

It is because it blends symphonic and avant elements, something I was not expect and never heard do before.

I am not (like Joel) "into" all those other subgenres as a result.

But Between the Buried and Me also surprised me this year. Smile

Wow. That was the loudest whiniest Thanksgiving I've ever had. Six kids, 11 and younger down to a couple years old. They didn't have a nap time. There were 10 kids in all, not counting me, but since I'm 19 I don't consider myself one. Tongue

I didn't eat much because I had a splitting headache. Good fun though.

I meant a migraine. Migraine = tummy ache and headache. I took a lot of caffeine via Excedrin and Coca-Cola, which helped a little. I still wasn't hungry though.
