Thanksgiving: Eat lots of good food, be annoyed by screaming/whiny kids...I like the food part a lot more.

I liked The Road, but he has a point, those excerpts of All The Pretty Horses are kind of terrible. Maybe he was taking them out of context.

I have literally tried to read The Road five times. And I have literally quit read before the fifth page. I mean, for sh*t's sake man, quotation marks exist for a reason! |

Yeah, that's irritating, and the Hemmingway endless short phrases connected by "and" were annoying sometimes, but I thought he had some good descriptive prose, even if the plot was a little weak sometimes.

Dale is certainly borderline. His favorite band is non-prog rock, but it's also noise-rock, so I can't tell. Speaking of noise, gotta, if you enjoy metal at all you should try Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Of Natural History as a way to ease into avant. They have a sense of fun that is absent from a lot of avant bands. And then before you know it you'll be listening to Cecil Taylor!

Maybe I'm a Philistine, but I can't be arsed to give half a sh*t about modern "literature." Give me Dune and Simon R Green novels...

love it, but I'm so insanely inept at staying on a book. I'm at over 300 pages into The Brothers Karamazov. Taking myself away from the heaps of praise. Dostoevsky--get to the f**king point. I've not read it in a few weeks.
I really need to read the rest of the Dune series. Children of Dune has been on my shelf for 3 years at least.

^Holy sh*t
Read Children of Dune nao! Thats slightly behind Dune for me, and its fully worth a read. I wouldn't bother reading Dune Messiah, which comes in between the two. I read it after I read the rest of the series, and its probably the worst. I didn't get anything out of it. |

Just listened to them. They're "interesting," but I don't think it's going to get me into avant-garde.

Have you heard Maudlin Of The Well's Part The Second? I never listened to anything outside symphonic or neo before that album, and now I love post rock, post metal, prog metal, tech/extreme prog metal, avant/RIO prog and many others. Its free for download on their site, so I recommend you get it. Fantastic album, and nice and light on the avant elements. |
