Just got home with The Great Misdirect  Smile.

Besides Mirrors and Obfuscation nothing is killing me yet, but every BtBaM album has taken at least 5 listens for me to enjoy so far so no concern.

Also, I have the Pelican show on Sunday which I'm pretty stoked about, especially considering theat they'r gonna be playing at a little record store before the big show earlier that day. I'll be sure to grab some cool merch!

I see. I assumed that you were going to be seeing Mastodon before me. (usually bands tend to hit up Florida after Texas) Also, wtf, isn't that a double dose of Pelican at this point?! You got to see them with Isis; now this... Bah!  Big smile When i saw them, the venue (or possibly their equipment setup) sucked so bad that they sounded like a wavering wall of distortion and rubbish.

Gonna see Pelican twice, and I've also seen the Wolves twice. Pelicans equipment is pretty good, but I know the venue that I saw them at is inconsistant at best with their mixing. THough the mix wasnt horrible last tiem I saw them, I know where you're coming from.

Anyone gonna see Baroness on their upcoming tour?

Trevor de Brauw is rocking a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier (not sure what Laurent uses) and those are absolute muthaf**kers of a good amp, so I really doubt there are backline issues, most likely a problem with overall mix/gay ass FOH engineer or whatever.
Cost over 5 grand to buy one of them Triple Rectifier sonna bitches in Australia, fuccccckkkkkk.

Why are we even talking about BTBAM in this thread?

Also, new Mono, yay or nay? Their Myspace samples don't really grab me, but it's not bad.

New Mono is AMAZING. It's been one of my favorites since I heard it at the beginning of the year. The stuff from the new album is absolutely astounding live as well.

At first the new Mono was really awesome, but now that I've had the chance to hear it a lot more times, I'm honestly not feeling it anymore than about 7/10 now.
Much preferring Avoid the Light from Long Distance Calling and Other Truths from Do Make Say Think for 2009 post rock so far.

And we are talking about BTBAM here because it's better than starting a new thread about it and some of the people here virtually never post outside this thread and this is the place for talking to the fellow post rock/post metal/math rock fans about pretty much anything within reasonable limits.
I'd say about 90 per cent of the time it's on topic, 10 per cent of the time is about other genres, non prog stuff and the odd discussion on what's been happening in our lives at a current moment in time and I'm cool with that.

Yup. I don't consider this a post thread. I just come here when I want to post something to the handful of people on this site whose musical opinions I actually value.

Also the new Mono really bores me now after a favorable first few listens. I'm sitting at 5/10 maybe.

Just checking guys. ;-)

The f**k Buttons really bored me, to the people who recommended them. It's the indie pop version of noise, like Black Dice and to a lesser extent Wolf Eyes. Sorry, but Pitchfork is terrible at everything.

Speaking of Pitchfork, I thought you guys might find their review of the new Russian Circles  entertaining (it's like everybody is releasing something this year) "Instrumental prowess is a double-edged sword in just about any genre, but when instrumental's all you do, you run the risk of the dreaded w**k with every flick of the wrist. "

I have to say I hate Pitchfork, but they have given one of my favorite reviewing lines of all time.

I believe it went: "Listening to Led Zeppelin IV for the first time is equivalent to f**king the grand canyon."

That's Pulitzer worthy.

See, I can't imagine f**king the Grand Canyon to be very pleasurable. But then again I don't like Led Zeppelin so I guess that's ok.

OK, catching up here:

Two listens of The Great Misdirect: Only Mirrors and Obfuscation totally grab me, and I still can't get over the Donkey Kong thing, but it's still good and I'm going to listen a few more times before I comment again.

I love the new Mono. I think it might be their best record to date. Seeing the songs live also made it really special.

I actually didn't like Avoid the Light much, and Other Truths so far isn't as stellar to me as their past four albums, but that one definitely needs more listens. I'm sure I'm going to like it more.

I actually don't mind pitchfork that much. They are elitist pricks and all, but they have led me to some awesome music. Plus their reviews are way more interesting to read than most, even if I disagree.

Next time you come over to my house, I'll make sure we have the right lube available <3

-----------
Also since I have too many posts already and don't want to be like James and double (and also triple, and quadruple) post,  consider this second half a separate post and I will add that Geneva is also one of my post rock favorites of this year. Every time the guitar tapping intro to Malko hits, I just jizz myself

f**king quadruple posts drive me insane.

I thought the samples from Long Distance Calling were insipid, but maybe that's just me.

Also, while not technically math rock (for reasons unkown to me), does anybody know what the hell the new Ahleuchatistas is doing on Tzadik? I never found them very good, but their being on Tzadik intrigues me because we all know how awesome John Zorn is.

I thought Long Distance Calling was rather insipid too, but keep in mind I'm a total hipster.

I think thinking that makes you less of a hipster, even though it's not listed on Pitchfork. At least I think generic, slightly poppy post-rock is extremely hipster at the moment.
