Teo, if we walked out that time at ProgNation, there were other reasons than just not liking the music - like, for instance, not feeling 100% well physically. When you are not in the best shape, listening to five-six hours of music nonstop can be a bit taxing, and you will agree with me that Dream Theater can be a demanding listen even for their fans. So, I would not say that we have 'mastered' the art of walking out

I wouldn't trust Teo that much if I were you... After all, I loved the 5-star album and concert of Dream Theater, while you walked out...
![]() Anyway, the album, after repeated listens, didn't improve much. The epic is slow and repetitive, at times trying to recapture the Downstair era but with little success... The four songs in disc 2 are utterly forgettable... Wilson was not inspired...

![]() I'll post my thoughts on the show... and I suppose the album. This year wasn't the best time to head west while Raff is still dealing with issues regarding her old job and immigration status here... but next year... we are coming west for sure. I'll be sure to take you up on that. |

feels like In Absentia by way of Fear of a Blank Planet with some other stuff thrown in
which by no means is a bad thing also I like Drawing the Line, though I hated it at first |

An interesting quote about Time Flies:
"The reason Time Flies is different is because it's supposed to be about me, my childhood, what formed me and also what formed me as a musician. The musical reference in it relate more to the music I grew up with. So you hear a very deliberate reference to Pink Floyd for example. The first album I ever bought was Animals. There's a riff in there that's very similar, just different enough to not get sued. There are also musical clues as well as lyrical clues to me growing up and to what created me as a musician, what created me as a person. That's one of the reasons why musically it does take you into a different area perhaps to some of the rest of the record." Edited by Pekka - September 24 2009 at 14:38 |

Alright I have listened to the album for 2 weeks straight and went to the concert at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. This album is truly stellar! The concert was even better! The second part of the show PT opened with "The Start of Something Beautiful"< ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">< name="ProgId" ="Word.">< name="Generator" ="Microsoft Word 12">< name="Originator" ="Microsoft Word 12">
when they performed this song I was blown away. The show was awesome anyone that has not seen PT should see them as soon as possible.
I would not rate this album 5 out of 5 but it is worthy of 3.9/4 out of 5. The song I enjoy the most on this album is "Drawing The Line".

Micky, I saw the show in Portland OR, last week. Like you I love early PT and I do like some of the stuff since even some of the metal parts. I will be interested to hear your reaction to the show so don't read a book thru the whole thing.
Still ready to pick you up at the airport on your next visit to portland. kenmar

I wouldn't either Rob... my tastes do run contrary to many around here. What they love is probably what I find boring as hell... that is why I hold out hope for Dream Theater... that do an album that totally alienates their fans (yeah... and pigs will fly hahha) and that is the album that will shed everything I hate about their music.. and be the album that hooks me on them.
I loved early PT.. but have not cared for anything since In Absentia... hopefully this is an album that sheds some of the uninspired music of the last few albums. |

Wouldn't be too shocked. Thought FOABP was a bit of a wreck, hoped the new one would be bad enough to review under the tagline 'the accident', expected it to be a 55-minutes because we need to be more prog than a concept album. Was pleasantly surprised. |

Definitely the worst PT album since.... well, I think it's their worst ever. Still not atrocious (the band is too good to release an atrocious album) but I'll give it 2 stars. The epic is predictable and repetitive, and the tracks in the second disc are a complete bore. What happened with Wilson skilss for melody I don't know....
A disappointment...

Over at eMusic.com they actually have a category called "Commercial Alternative": http://www.emusic.com/browse/0/a/-dam/a/0-0/1200000374/0.html PT are listed there - but they're also listed as Progressive Rock (eMusic has multiple genres per album). |

Hmm...
I love The Incident. On the first listen it wasn't so good... I thought that, well, the sounds are awesome and the second CD has got some fairly decent songs but this is a bit of a disappointment. The second listen made me like the album a little bit more but it still wasn't as good as I expected. But the third listen. Damn, it was awesome. The whole album just... came off crystal clear to me, seriously. I loved every piece of it. The alternative metal influences? Oh yeah, when PT goes heavy it succeeds. It has been proven many, many times and I love it. Circle of Manias? Would be even more awesome as a full-fledged song and not a interlude-kinda thing, but it's awesome, still. Bonnie the Cat then... It's just damn good. I so love it. And back to the first CD's songs... Well, there's the short but yet so ethereal Kneel and Disconnect, the poppy (some have dissed this, why?) but great Drawing the Line, the "summerish" Time Flies (brilliant aswell) and of course, the epic I Drive the Hearse, which has probably the best melodies of the whole album. Then there's of course Degree Zero... and such interlude-kinda things which are a wise thing as well but don't really stand out. All of the songs on the second album are very good and I don't get why people call it the "throwaway cd" since the songs are actually fantastic... When analyzing this, Insurgentes, everything else PT's done etc. I have come to the conclusion that Steven Wilson is a genius. :) |

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion but when you begin to draw conclusions from your opinion they become invalid. It may seem more mainstream to you, (not for me however), how would you know if he wants to become more mainstream? Why is being alternative negative? Thirdly how can something be mainstream and alternative? I know English isn't your first language; however, logic is universal and I can't see yours.
