Now you should have made a poll out of this. I'm going for a five. I'll buy it for sure and judge and review it with complete objectivity.

Have just pre-ordered the standard version - deluxe just a little too much out of my price range and - I would really want to be sure that I was getting my monies worth. Out of 10 - I would go at this point 6 or 7. We really can't judge until we hear it!

I'm actually looking forward for the new album. Everything I've heard from it has been effing disappointing, as if the band hadn't developed at all between this and the latter, and as if they never wanted to. And that's not a nice thing to do to a fan who's expecting something groundbreaking again. Of course if you say, that it's not fair to set the expectations too high everytime, then why expect anything. I mean, if it's going to be a 10, there's a lot more there, than most bands could ever come up with, but if you expect a 4, why even expect anything? What do I know really? I know, that I expect an album no better than 6, and basically one that's just repeating FOABP, just doing it for a longer period of time. But, I have this itch in the back of my head... could be epilepsy too... but I feel like they're going to come up with something unexpected. Something I'd never have hoped for. It's been done: Pure Reason Revolution for one ;). Soo I expect a boring album... but I also expect my expectations not to come true.

Can anyone say Caress of Steel? Like that great album of Rush's, this album will separate the true fans from the amateurs (same theme (in a sense) as well). It is very complex but gets exceeding better with each listen (like Radiohead's OK Computer - if you can remember the first few times you listened to it). I really like it!! I think he's saying we should rate Britanny Spears highly because she has a "no bad looking body", but thats a bad way to rate people. And also, if he/she was Britanny Spears, he wouldn't care what we rated him/her.

Disc 2 isn't any better, but is more consistent. it does contain Bonnie The Cat though, which is a great track in the style of FOABP.
The preview for sure had the greatest moments from the album... and I think the full album is very inconsistent. It has some fantastic highlights such as The Blind House and The Incident, but also lot of weak, uninteresting and even boring moments. Overall I think it's a pretty good album... it's not their best, but it's definitely in the top 5 of them IMO.

I thought I'd hate it when I first started listening but it grew on me really fast. Disc 2 is really good, I like that really mellow song, Black Dahlia, I think it was called... when I first heard the album the songs from disc 2 were mixed in with the songs from disc 1 and it worked really well that way. :P
Anyway, overall not Stupid Dream or In Absentia but I might like it more than Fear of a Blank Planet.

Well, (thankfully) its not really in the style of FOABP, and as most Porcupine Tree albums do, it feels different to most others they've released.
The mood is fairly dark the entire way through, but there's not really any new ground broken - Sure, its great, but its nothing incredibly special or unique like THE SKY MOVES SIDEWAYS, although its still very good and features some interesting textures and mood swings.

I think the album's sound has quite a lot similarities with FOABP. The mood is very dark, like FOABP, there are some parts where the synth is very present, like FOABP, and there even are some actual connections to FOABP; like the main riff from The Blind House, which is made out of the same chords as a riff from Anesthetize. I think songs like The Incident, Bonnie The Cat, The Blind House, Circle Of Manias and maybe even Time Flies (for the middle part) would fit in pretty good on FOABP.

I have heard it a few times now, and I think its great. I applaud Wilson for not just delivering a carbon copy of FOABP, but going in a completely different direction.
'The Blind House', 'Kneel And Disconnect', 'Drawing the Line', 'The Incident', 'Octane Twisted', and 'Bonnie The Cat' are my favourite songs so far.
I think there's a much darker ambience around this album. I suspect there might be an Opeth influence. In fact, ever since Steve Wilson worked with them, I think both bands have influenced each other a lot.

I'm really glad I kinda backed off PT for about a month and a half before the album came out. I'm gonna try and pick it up tomorrow, based on the iTunes 30 second samples (lol) it sounds pretty decent.

I'm a tremendous PT fanboy and yet this is probably the largest disappointment of the past few years for me. It's a very weak and underwhelming album. I've listened to it 6 times I believe and each time I do so, I actually like it less. My opinions:
Disc 1:
I quite like: The Seance (That acoustic riff at the end is the coolest riff on the whole album) Octane Twisted Kneel and Disconnect Time Flies The Yellow Windows of the Evening Train (reminds me of Sigur Ros)
I like: I Drive the Hearse Circle of Manias(Cool mathy track.) Occam's Razor/The Blind House (Pretty cool beginning, has more energy than anything else on the album)
I don't like: The Incident
I really dislike: Drawing
the Line - teh fakk is dis sh*tt/?? By far
the worst thing Steven Wilson has ever participated in. Great Expectations
Neutral/Undecided: Your Unpleasent Familly Degree Zero of Liberty
And from Disc 2:
I quite like: Flicker Bonnie the Cat (Very unique track. Awesome bass playing & drumming.)
I don't like: Remember me Lover
Neutral: Black Dahlia
What's with the swearing in the lyrics? It makes the already bad lyrics even worse... Immature, IMO.
I
hope Porcupine Tree does make another album eventually, for the sole
reason that this one is simply not good enough to act as the signature
on their discography... More importantly, I hope that the next one is
better than this one.

I found the first disc to be incredibly inconsistent. It had good moments, but some laughably bad ones as well. Second disc is overall a bit better, but still not that great.
To be honest, I don't like their new "proggier" direction. Prefer the good old Deadwing days.

By the way, Dalezilla, I think Deadwing is one of the bands most progressive albums so far... and apart from the concept, I don't think The Incident is very progressive at all.

I agree on the part about The Incident not being very progressive, but I don't agree about Deadwing being very prog.

Hope you enjoy it Eric

I think the album's sound has quite a lot similarities with FOABP. The mood is very dark, like FOABP, there are some parts where the synth is very present, like FOABP, and there even are some actual connections to FOABP; like the main riff from The Blind House, which is made out of the same chords as a riff from Anesthetize. I think songs like The Incident, Bonnie The Cat, The Blind House, Circle Of Manias and maybe even Time Flies (for the middle part) would fit in pretty good on FOABP. |
I don't HATE it... But it just isn't very interesting. It lacks the creativity, the soundscapes, and the songwriting that made most of their other albums successful. I loved their last five albums so I was bound to be disappointed sooner or later I guess.

^Agreed. Maybe after PT really blew up with Fear of a Blank Planet, Steven Wilson tried a bit too hard to make a stellar, epic follow-up. The result is that it sounds a bit forced, among other things. Not bad, but not great.

Deadwing progressive? Please elaborate. And as far as The Incident goes, I just prefer PT when they're more straightforward and not so meandery.

Arriving Somewhere is one of the most progressive songs the band has made, as it has lots of different riffs, parts, and styles in 12 minutes. (soundscapes, verses, heavy part, ambient guitar solo, etc. The title track also is a very strong structured song, like Arriving Somewhere. Mellotron Scratch, The Start Of Something Beautiful, and Glass Arm Shattering don't have a basic structure either, mostly because the second half of these songs are pretty different from the first halfs (ok, Start Of... not that much). Also, the album is a concept album, which doesn't have to be progressive, but because of it the songs have a certain order and move towards the dramatic end, making much progress on the way onto that end. I do agree with you that the remaining songs (Shallow, Lazarus, Halo and Open Car) aren't very progressive though.

I've only listened to The Incident a couple times so far, but I already like it more than FOABP, which was awful, even compared to Nil Recurring.
Right now I think the album suffers from being too long for its own good. There are some great moments and some bad ones, and some things that just drag. I already like the 2nd disc better than the first, though the doom metal title track is fabulous.

I've listened the album a couple of turned now...
There are not too many, if any, great memorable melodies.
Time flies is a Dogs rip off. I know he likes Floyd but...
That is not a 55 minutes song. And if the hype meant a 55 minutes concept, what's so new about that?
It's not a bad album, but it's not great either. To me, Insugentes it's a better PT album.
There's a KC's Red melody in the 2nd song I think.
I like the production very much.

I just picked it up at the mall a couple of hours ago. I couldn't find the album at first, but it wasn't with the rest of the PT albums. I just started listening to it now so it's way too early to comment on it.
Edit: Finished the first listen. It will definitely need some time. Not bad. Not spectacular.

Like all the other posts, my opinion is obviously subjective, so if it annoys you, chill !
IMO The Incident is PT's best album since Signify and stomps all over the disjointed mess that was FAOBP, which conversely was their worst album since Signify. In Time Flies I believe they have written a live anthem that might put Even Less on the subs bench, and by the way it's an homage to Pink Floyd, not a copy.
Those of you who are of the mp3 generation should try listening to it on a decent hi-fi (remember them?) with the volume cranked up really high - simply awesome!

well, After my first 2 listens, I didn't like the album much. But giving it more listens, the songs grew on me. especially those filler songs. The chorus of Drawing the line is absolutely horrible. I wonder how the incredible Steven Wilson came up with something like that.
Besides that, most of the songs are good. My favourite part is the verse in Remember me Lover. Time Flies is epic to say the least. Other songs I like are The Incident, Blind House. Great Expectations, Kneel and Disconnect.

I think for any other band (or at least a non-prog band), it would be a good album. But since Porcupine Tree has consistently made albums waaaaay better than this one, I just can't get into it.

It's a fairly typical double album, just too much material, and not enough of it good. There's enough in here for a killer, killer single album, but that's true with just about every highly regarded double album that isn't "Double Nickels on the Dime"
I really like the title track, though.

So do you guys think it's actually prog, or not? I'm never going to buy it, I'm just curious because I don't see much prog in PT from In Abstentia on so I am baffled by this whole phenomenon.

75 minutes hardly counts as a double album. They only would have had to edit five minutes out and it would have been a single, and I have trouble believing that 5 minutes makes the difference between boring and a killer, killer album.

It does when you think the ideal album length is around one hour. (I've always thought the CD 80-minute mark is overstepping for most artists, but that's another discussion altogether)

Put it this way; one of my favorite examples of a double album hiding a brilliant single album was "Exile on Main St.", which fits on a single CD these days.
