Topic: Death Metal Bds withan Vocallists who Don't Sing Posted: September 17 2009 at 18:56 |
Do you REALLY enjoy listenning to death/black metal bands with vocallists who croak, belch, scream, and do everything but sing tunefully?

Yes. Check out my signature.
To be honest, I don't like extreme death metal, but melodic death metal and progressive death metal bands usually appeal to me.

I'm sorry, perhaps I should have made my point a bit clearer.
I was refering to the vocals in these bands, not the music itself.

I doubt I would listen to death metal even if growls didn't make me laugh. So I guess I don't care. I should add that I see no inherent value in "tuneful" singing.

^It's actually difficult that you find anything with inherent value Henry
I love growling when it's done right. Very low, guttural, evil... not the yelling screams of metalcore and related styles....

^^ I like some higher growls with some bands. Chuck Schuldiner's growls on Symbolic are AWESOME, and they are not low at all. However, i usually agree with you.

Deep growls are excellent. I find them to be one of the best ways to create a harsh wave of sound for the listener. I'm not really a fan of black vocals, but the music that accompanies it tends to be excellent. Screams a la metalcore are generally the same, except they tend to lack the good music portion.

I like Death despite the vocals, but Shuldiner's pained howls are kind of cool... I suppose, other bands like Opeth and Cynic which mix growls and clean vocals are good but I would never listen to the sh*t that is pure growling and no music.

Growls/ rasps/ screams are a big part of extreme metal and are meant to convey extreme emotions. Without extreme vocals the music just wouldnīt be the same. Iīve had periods of my life when I didnīt really enjoy extreme vocals, but I guess I must have missed them because after each period ( short or lenghty) of not listening to music with extreme vocals I always return for more.

Wow, I've never known this even exists. Some DM vocalist's solo project with no instrumentalists involved? Now that is extreme.

Yes I REALLY enjoy listening to metal bands with growls, shrieks, screams and any other form of voice. It sounds like I'm being accused of something here... Does that REALLY offend/bother you that people like them? I also REALLY enjoy any other type of vocals. It's individual singer, growlers etc. that I might dislike. There are some vocalists with clear/soft voice that I really dislike, as there are some growlers/shrieks.

Depends who;s growling really. I can just about tolerate Piotr Wiwczarek from Vade, but I can't even listen to a word of Tomas Haake's vocals ![](smileys/smiley36.gif) They just irritate me. But I could listen to the pair of growlers from Nile all day long, they have such good tone.

Harsh vocals are used throughout metal these days, and occasionally it works very well for me, as on Indukti's Idmen or Unexpect's In a Flesh Acquarium. As someone else said, I like them best when they are used as a way to express one set of feelings in a music that has a range of feeling, and there for a range of vocal tonalities. I frankly think some harsh vocals sound awful and don't fit the music at all. There are sadly many bands that I get really excited about until vocals come in (that means you Intronaut.)

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

What I noticed in a few metal bands is rather the unability of some singers to really sing low. Napalm Death's Mark Greenaway is unattackable, just as Karl Willet or Martin van Drunen in Bolt Thrower or Angela Gossow. But I often heard some amateurs in the field of deep vocals, forcing their mouth, maybe their throat, yet sounding weak and feeble.

I honestly laugh whenever somebody complains about extreme vocals. If you just don't enjoy it that's one thing, but to claim it as some abberant music fad which will soon descend into musical hell it crawled out of, that's just ridiculous.
It's like saying "I would like the Rite of Spring if Stravinsky just would use the strings 'tunefully'."

Usualy I like death metal, not black metal only fiew bands here and there. Death metal if is sing and played from the soul , with open mind and pleasure is awesome. Doesn't bother me extrem vocals at all. Each vocalist has his own range for ex, I like Schuldiners voice , but I also like Bolt Thrower voice aswell, rough ,deep very death, and also Carcass kind of vocals, diffrent from Bolt or Death or others but still death. Anyway one of the best death vocalist I ever heard is from Disincarnate (James Murphy band) - his name is Bryan Cegon - simply amazing .
