LOTR by far for me, Star Wars never appealed to me (it seems I am not a sci-fi freak LOL)

I grew up on Star Wars, so I'm biased. Although most of my teen years were spent playing D&D, so I can't say I'm a sci-fi nut over fantasy Geek

I've got the rings on DVD, but not any of the wars.  I still have fond memories of seeing the first wars in a theater.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

LOTR - Having read the books twice through and seen the movies about the same amount, it still stands out in my opinion, as the best of the sci-fi genre of all time. I love Star Wars and Dune but the difference is that the latter two are definitely sci-fi, while LOTR is fantasy. Hence I would give equal rating to LOTR and Star Wars on that basis - makes it easy when it comes to a difficult decision! Wink

Actually, Star Wars isn't Scfi-Fi at all. It is Fantasy through-and-through. It just happens to take place is space, but that is where the ties to Sci-Fi begin and end. Wink
For Penny LotR film was less of a Fantasy and more a home movie. LOL

LOL
Ha Ha guys!! LOL Yeah 'spose you could say that. For your information, I lived in the above area for several years - though before LOTR was shot there. It is absolutely beautiful. I recommend you save your pennies and make a trip down here pronto!! Wink

as wonderful as Lord is, I prefer StarWars for it's limitless imagination, also at this point with all the supplemental material SW seems to have a larger universe and much wider palette to work with

I'll have to say Star Wars.  I love the original trilogy and Revenge of The Sith.  Haven't seen Attack Of The Clones in a while, but watched Phantom Menace a while ago and it was just as unmemorable as I remember it.

That being said, I do enjoy watching the LOTR movies.  I tried to distance myself from them when they first came out because I thought it looked a bit lame (says a huge Trek fan LOL).  I have yet to read the books.

Damn, you beat me to it! Classic scene nonetheless. LOL

As for the poll, I vote Star Wars. Ironically enough, I've seen every single Star Wars movie, and don't own any of them, yet I own all the LOTR films and have only seen the first two.

LOTR.

I love the books (and the movies) and have read them once a year for the last 7 years or so. Started with The Hobbit though and took it from there.

I love Star Wars as well, but it's just not the same thing.

You haven't read it?

I think DUNE is easily the best Sci-Fi series of all time (with the movie in exception)

Star Wars is entertaining though
I fixed it.  Between the two, based on the movies AND the print versions, I'd say that Lord of the Rings has an incredible edge, of course in the books.  The movies are nearly equal in my opinion.  I think the Dune movie, while definitely not perfect, is incredible in its own way.

The movie was ok, but I don't think it really did the book Justice.

Have you seen the HBO Miniseries? Now those were great...

I haven't seen the miniseries yet.  I plan to buy them soon though, as I've heard they're good in their way as well.  From what I've heard, some of the characters were better in them than the movie and vice versa.  I'm wondering what the new Dune movie has in store for us...I'm wary, but hopeful.

Bigger on the inside.

Are you reffering to Paul Of Dune?

Picked it up about 6 months ago - It bridges Dune Messiah and Children Of Dune... Great book, albeit less than the amazing original.

I enjoyed the Star Wars series, but Lord Of The Rings has it by a country mile for me - as Jackson effectively filmed all three films at the same time, I think the resulting trilogy was way more consistent. Also, the casting & overall general feel (IMO) really captured the atmosphere of the novel(s).

the Star Wars movie adaptions were clumsy novelizations of the films so that goes without saying, though some of the non-film books are rather good (such as Deathstar)
