Star Wars, been watching it since I was 8 years old.

However, Lord of the Rings is really good, though I would like to read the books someday...

You haven't read it?

I think DUNE is easily the best Sci-Fi series of all time (with the movie in exception)

Star Wars is entertaining though

I'm more  of a fantasy than sci-fi person. But I do really like the Star Wars series as well.  The original three are my favourites.

I'll take fast-paced action and laser swords over long-winded old men and annoying midgets any day.

Plus, I'm convinced that Natalie Portman and I were married in a past life judging by just how drawn to her I am.

LotR, no question. The Lord of the Rings feels like it has so much more depth, and a better overall story. As far as the movies go, I love both trilogies, but I like LotR just a little more. I would like it a lot more if they hadn't took away the ending in the book.

A more interesting poll would be this:
vs.
NOTE: that is Melkor/Morgoth, not Sauron. If it were Sauron he would be put up against Darth Vader.

LotR - if Lucas had stuck with a trillogy then I would have had a harder choice to make.

Dune - if Lynch had had the conviction and backing to make that a trillogy instead of cramming three books into two and a bit hours of film then this would have been a different poll methinks.

I fixed it.  Between the two, based on the movies AND the print versions, I'd say that Lord of the Rings has an incredible edge, of course in the books.  The movies are nearly equal in my opinion.  I think the Dune movie, while definitely not perfect, is incredible in its own way.

The movie was ok, but I don't think it really did the book Justice.

LotR def.

I mean... the depth that went into that. Star Wars is Very good. (I'm talking about IV-VI here) But it's still.... Hollywood.
Whereas LotR is a guys lifes work. And a brilliant man's at that.

LOTR if we're talking in general. If we have to go just by movies then Star Wars would unfortunately win out.

LOTR - Having read the books twice through and seen the movies about the same amount, it still stands out in my opinion, as the best of the sci-fi genre of all time. I love Star Wars and Dune but the difference is that the latter two are definitely sci-fi, while LOTR is fantasy. Hence I would give equal rating to LOTR and Star Wars on that basis - makes it easy when it comes to a difficult decision! Wink

Seconded.

I prefer much more science fiction to the sword and sorcery genre, but LOTR is the best fantasy around, while Star Wars is just a space opera, although a good one.

But I have to agree with Kos here, Ice And Fire is the best fantasy series going.  can't wait for the HBO series!

Actually, Star Wars isn't Scfi-Fi at all. It is Fantasy through-and-through. It just happens to take place is space, but that is where the ties to Sci-Fi begin and end. Wink

I'll have to say Star Wars.  I love the original trilogy and Revenge of The Sith.  Haven't seen Attack Of The Clones in a while, but watched Phantom Menace a while ago and it was just as unmemorable as I remember it.

That being said, I do enjoy watching the LOTR movies.  I tried to distance myself from them when they first came out because I thought it looked a bit lame (says a huge Trek fan LOL).  I have yet to read the books.

As for the poll, I vote Star Wars. Ironically enough, I've seen every single Star Wars movie, and don't own any of them, yet I own all the LOTR films and have only seen the first two.

I love Star Wars as well, but it's just not the same thing.

You haven't read it?

I think DUNE is easily the best Sci-Fi series of all time (with the movie in exception)

Star Wars is entertaining though

Have you seen the HBO Miniseries? Now those were great...

I haven't seen the miniseries yet.  I plan to buy them soon though, as I've heard they're good in their way as well.  From what I've heard, some of the characters were better in them than the movie and vice versa.  I'm wondering what the new Dune movie has in store for us...I'm wary, but hopeful.

I enjoyed the Star Wars series, but Lord Of The Rings has it by a country mile for me - as Jackson effectively filmed all three films at the same time, I think the resulting trilogy was way more consistent. Also, the casting & overall general feel (IMO) really captured the atmosphere of the novel(s).

the Star Wars movie adaptions were clumsy novelizations of the films so that goes without saying, though some of the non-film books are rather good (such as Deathstar)
