The Marillion Round Table

^^I don't own this, Joel. A 6 minute of "Heart Of Lothian" though. Sounds interesting.

I'm not a singles guy. I have the 3 singles after Somewhere Else was released and a copy of "Alone In The Lap Of Luxury" with some live stuff ("Cover My Eyes/Slainte Mhath") that I found at Amoeba's in San Francisco 4 years ago.

I love the fact that they re-created the performance per the Brave tour.

What I really notice from this particular performance is how it increases in intensity...particularly Hogarth. His vocals start off a bit tentative on "Bridge/Living With The Big Lie", but get much stronger as the performance progresses. One of the best performances of "The Great Escape" that I've ever heard, too.

Tony, just by what I read in the biography Separated Out, it seemed the candle was burning at both ends between Fish and the rest of the band. It states at least one instance where Rothery and Fish got into a huge argument to the point that Fish had thrown Steve up against the wall.

The rest were wanting a different direction, and no amount of time could've swayed those feelings.

I will add that I believe Marillion were really on the verge of being a global phenomenon. Misplaced introduced them to the MTV age, and Clutching broke new barriers. I also think that it would've burned out a couple of years later.

With Hogarth, however, I think they found somebody with whom they were on the same page and the same vision. Maybe they didn't achieve the global success that they could have, but I do think they lasted much longer with h than they ever could with Fish. And their music still sounds fresh and relevant. Even further, the new music ventures off and explores new ideas. More so than if Fish were still with the band.

Just my opinion, though.

The booklets of the remastered double CD editions of the Fish-era albums are a very good read about Marillion's struggle before and after Fish's departure...

I still think it's a tragedy, even though there is a lot of material of the H era that I do enjoy. Fish-era Marillion was not just good, it was pure magic.

I think I must be one of the few who was a Marillion and a Europeans fan in the early 80s, my interest in Marillion was waning after Misplaced and I was not immediately impressed with Clutching, if Fish had stayed I honestly don't know if I would have bought the next album or not.

I agree - definitely makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up too.  And i have always thought that while there are many more extravagant, technical guitarist, Rothery's tone is among the most epic around.

^Indeed it is a great song - The live videos stand testament to that!


Also, I had an error ordering ANORAK IN THE UK ...
It didn't place my order, as the RBS WORLDPAY service was down, although it did refund me with the click of a button...

Still annoying, I'll probably try buying again in the next couple of days.
