I listened to Empiricisms and it was a bit too cheesy for my tastes with the epic vocals and the string-y synths present, just in my opinion. Perhaps I should check out an album with the other singer in them?

Check Quintessence ,ICS Vortex from Dimmu Borgir is on vocals and pretty descent screams and clean vocals he has , very good album is that. Borknagar -their first album is their most black metal influenced album with Prog hints, Kristoffer ''Garm'' Rygg is on vocals and i suppose you will like it

Garm is on BOTH of the first two albums.... I have only heard 'the olden domain', but I love it. |

Ulcerate and Blut Aus Nord have been suggested to the PMT. Any comments from someone who knows the work of these artists?
I personally think they would be great additions. Very intereresting acts both of them.

the first Ulcerate album is good.... sort of like Gorguts lite. very dissonant, amazing drumming, some doom parts and overall great songwriting. the new one, however, was a big let-down (not proggy at all) Blut Aus Nord is only experimental in the albums The Work Which Transforms God -through- Odinist; the albums before and after that are pretty standard melodic, symphonic black metal. The ones I mentioned however take a page from the dark ambient, dissonant experimentation of bands like Deathspell Omega... yet they have their own sound... which I very much love! If we are going to debate putting BAN in the archives, might as well include The Axis Of Perdition: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=7836 or even Spektr: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=18228 or how about Portal? http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=5471 |

You should see them (Portal) when they perform live, the singer wears a clock on his head!

i have only heard Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II Dialogue With The Stars, so that album is very good, and it fits PA easily , although it is in fact some atmospheric/symphonic black but prog influences are visible throughout whole album.. i haven't heard their previous albums

Are you serious??? Their new album was fairly groundbreaking as a death metal album. There are barely any death metal cliches within. |

Everyone borrows or steals from somebody else when it comes to music, so the statement 'barely any death metal cliches' does not compute. Yeah, sue me... the new one is boring compared to the debut. disclaimer: this is only an opinion.... hence, not debatable. and I hate to break it to you, but groundbreaking no longer exists in death metal.... it has pretty much all been done. Like I said, Gorguts did this style better almost a decade ago..... I am glad they are rejuvenated....

Here is a little-known gem-of-a-band in the world of experimental/progressive brutal death metal:
Psychofagist; http://www.myspace.com/psychofagist I love them. They have taken the extremes of dissonance, insanity and experimentation and followed them to a terminus. These guys blow away Ulcerate imo and should be considered for the extreme/tech list on here! |

you may have a really dark sense of humor, I don't think any of it is intended as tongue-in-cheek...... It is part performance art really, setting an aesthetic mood and intensity.... It would be surreal to see them live. |

Maybe not! But when you dress like the KKK who met the chimney sweeper itīs hard not to find it a bit funny. I like bizarre humour. If this is not intented as humour I actually find it pretentious and art for arts sake. I generally donīt enjoy performance art. However dark and intriguing ( it often takes away from the fact that the music sucks). You might find it aesthetic experience to see them live. I doubt if I could hide a smile. Taste is taste though and Iīm not saying itīs wrong. I just donīt enjoy it if thereīs no humerous intention behind such a scene. Much like I donīt enjoy a lot of black metal acts and their pretentious attitudes.

No problem man; I am glad somebody enjoys what I recommend! Now Playing: Psychotic Waltz: Into The Everflow.... one of THE BEST prog metal albums of all time! Here's another one for ya: Le Grand Guignol (they have a sort of Arcturus vibe) http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=107653 Another one in a similar vein: Vulture Industries: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=36666 (the side project of this band "Black Hole Generator" is good too) for another great avant garde black metal band: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=75315 (awesome stuff! Into the Everflow is a favorite of mine too. I saw Psychotic Waltz live on the Mosquito and on the Bleeding tour. Great shows in a very small venue ( maybe 150-200 people in the audience). The band were totally stoned but played like a dream. Buddy was such a sight on a stage back then. Dancing his weird dances and joking with the audience. They played lots of songs from the first two albums at both concerts. I have a really great long sleeve from the Mosquito tour that I purchased at the show ( very worn and with holes but I still got it) with the moon smoking a pipe. Really great psychadelic picture. I also purchased the first Darkstar album at one of those shows. A unique band that deserves much more attention and praise. |
