The new single from the new Porcupine Tree album?
My opinion: Meh.
Sounds a lot like "Stars Die". But, I think all Porcupine Tree records are worth checking out. On the first impression, it sounds like Mr. Wilson knocked this one off in his sleep.

Hyperlinks are not difficult! Yet you seem never to do them!
Is that Steve singing? WTF happened to his voice? And does anybody else think the chorus sounds like exactly TMV? Otherwise, it's pretty boring.

That was pretty bad. I mean the drum work was nice, but I can't say I liked anything about it. The intro is particularly just boring and with Wilson's vocals doing nothing to draw me in. |
Yes i felt the same way about the track, very repetitive and boring

It's the repetition that gets to me, I guess that's why it worked so well in the album preview.

Why is everyone over reacting ?! This is just a 5 minute clip from a 11 minute song. It will probably sound so much better once you hear the track in full. And everyone should shut up about saying it sounds to much like the floyd. What prog band today does not take some influence from the classic 70's bands.

There's a difference between being influenced by Pink Floyd and being the poor man's Pink Floyd.

Actually, PT's fanbase, being much smaller than that of PF, and composed mostly of people like us who can afford a computer, is richer than that of PF, even though because of their age probably their fans already have better jobs... it's really a death match. Maybe PF is the rich man's PT, or PT the middle-class man's PF, or maybe there's socialism in their music after all.

Exactly. JROCHA, with all respect . . . you should cool down a bit. If you disagree with those of us who think the song is PF carbon copy, go ahead and disagree, but saying things like, "Everyone should shut up" is very unbecoming of you, my good man. I have never complained about an artist being influenced by another artist, but when they mimic an already existing song almost exactly, it bothers me. It bothers me because I know Steve Wilson can do better than this, and it also bothers me because I was looking forward to this record before hearing this track, and now based on what I hear, it seems to be quite unoriginal. I am a Porcupine Tree fan. One of the biggest fans, in my opinion. I'm not just cutting down a band I didn't like in the first place; I'm fretting over a band I love taking the easy road and not composing from scratch. I'm sorry if that upsets you, but I'm just being honest, and I would never tell you to "shut up" for simply having opinion that differs from mine.

Well, they haven't succeeded until now, my friend.

Take a look at the song overall...it's nothing like anything Pink Floyd ever did. Porcupine Tree stopped even sounding like a (better) Pink Floyd after The Sky Moves Sideways.

Yet another case of drawing far-reaching conclusions from insufficient material, in my opinion. All we can tell from this piece of music is what we think about this piece of music. And as for it being a carbon copy of anything, I wouldn't want to be using your photocopier. I respect the 'sounds-like' opinion, but it's not a copy.

Both of you must not be hearing the same song that I am, then. Do you honestly think this song WASN'T inspired by the 'Animals' songs?

Sorry, did I say I didn't think it was inspired by 'Animals'? What I said was that it is not a carbon copy.

I honestly do not hear anything remotely " Dogs" like if anything, " Sheep"- the guitar riff at the end. But it's OK, comparisons and similarities are cool. It's not plagiarism just a great song IMO.

So you are willing to admit that those songs did in fact inspire this track? See, if the inspiration is indeed that obvious, to me, that's a bad thing. I've heard Pink Floyd influences in Porcupine Tree's music before, but never this obvious or 'in-your-face', and yes, that saddens me.

^ Why don't you judge the whole album in it's entirety when you have the chance or...............not play it. But give it a chance I reckon

^ I have every intention of buying this album. I even enjoy this song. But to say it is anything but a carbon copy of a past song is (in my opinion) lying to oneself.

If a riff in a song sounds slightly similar (and it is nothing more than slightly if anything...the tempo, groove, time signature, and rhythm in Dogs is entirely different to the riff in Time Flies, which is why I didn't make the connection...you have to reach pretty far to find it). But there is a similar tempo and closer strumming to the chorus of Time Flies to that of Sheep, and I noticed that pretty early on listening to it. I see no connection in the lyrics to Dogs, nor in the vocal melody. Overall, I suppose it could be subliminally inspired by Sheep, but I think the two songs are wildly different. You could say that by 90% of all pop music now, though. They don't sound similar enough to taint the song.
