Well I dont think ANYone, (who is sane) actually expects Cohen movies to change anyones viewpoints. Those that enjoy them, (generally) will already be open minded about such topics.
People who hate gays well, of course they'll hate the movie but they wouldn't like it anyway. His work is not for everyone, that's for sure.

True. Now, we established he will not change people's minds, so his work doesn't really have any redeeming value from that side. As a display of story-telling art, is garbage. What is it, then? A desire to shock, to impress by disgust, in a society where every day it's easier to impress people just by being rude and un-civil.
The destruction of cinema. Stories are gone. |
Please, cinema will be destroyed by meat head sh*t like Crank and Fast and Furious and stupid slasher movies like TCM or The Unborn (seriously, movie with creepy kid that kills ppl, that never happens) long before it's threatened by the likes of Cohen. In fact I'd venture to say his stuff has more of a plot than the aforementioned genres.

Ok, cinema is alreayd being destroyed by other kind of things, I give you that. The movies you mention are stupid, popcorn-movies (sometimes even these movies can be amusing, some of them at least). Substitute the explosions and the special effects of those ones with the insults and the shock value of your beloved genius and we have movies that still work thorugh the same organ: the stomach. IN MY VIEW. Or,according to Lehto, ME BEING MY USUAL SELF.
What I don't like is that it brings movies one step closer to "reality cinema". Maybe it's just me... I still prefer movies with plot, even dumb ones, to anything like Borat, which actually was quite better than the most recent one.
This is a debate of like vs don't like. Calm down.

Exactly. I know we're proggers so EVERYTHING must be intelligent but seriously....sometimes dumb funny is, well funny. Gotta have some things simple.

Mr Lehto: I love stupid, simple things. I love most simple stupid muswic more than most of the over-complicated prog some people adore. I love stupidity. I just think Cohen PLAINLY SUCKS. Can you accept different tastes in stupidity as well as you accept different views in politics?
I hate intellectual wannabes as much as you... but it doesn't mean I have to like every stupid thing there is out...
EDIT: I guess I better leave this Cohen-appreciation thread. My mistake to come in.

The T is entitled to an opinion though, just like the rest of us. No need to get aggressive.

Ok truce, I'm getting way too serious over a trivial topic here. I call myself arrogant proggie cuz evidently that's the stereotype and I wouldn't want to let people down by not fulfillign it.

But seriously dude, sorry. Not sure what's been up with me, I'm guessing summer boredom and WAY too much time on the internet. Anyway, that whole thing outta hand, my bad.

Yes. That is one reason I loved Borat so much. The poor b*****ds had no clue.... Obviously, some were staged but most of it was just...what we saw. Not the same in Bruno. Especially that part with the child photo shoot. At first we were laughing.....but as it went it was so fake. I thought maybe it was just edited in a way to make them look sick....but it had to have been set up.

On a totally irrelevant side note, I visited Graceland many years ago and was surprised to find out that Elvis was a big fan of the Holy Grail movie. I'm not making this up.
