Opeth is my favorite band of all time and they are certainly Extreme. They most definitely fit in this thread...

I actually found you can order Sol Niger Within off the drummer's website for 140 Swedish Krona, which is about 19 dollars, which sounds like a damn good deal.

I thought the album was quite good but its gone down in my esteem a bit since last year. It just doesnt seem to gell to well as an album, rather as a series of songs that just doent seem to work to well togethor. |

That is good! Too late now though.... Regardless, it will be worth it. And Sleeper, you seem to agree with me on Watershed. Maybe it was the excitement of a new Opeth album but the more I listened the more it has fallen. I do enjoy it, but really not one of their best releases. |

Yeah, since Blackwater Park I either dont like their albums or just find them OK, nothing they've done in the last 7 or so years has come close to matching 4 of those first 5 albums (not that fond of Morningrise, though its still a good album).

I hear you. It's tough once a band has made gold like that. Really can only go down or do the same thing, (then people will complain there's nothing new).

Last time I checked Opeth were in the Tech/Extreme sub,so talking about the band in this thread is perfectly logical.
Giving us a hard time for talking about them in this thread is uneccesarily rude.

After Blackwater Park their albums are very good, but not as excellent as before... I don't really think any of them falls below 4 stars to be honest but... However, I really like Morningrise, I think is a really beautiful and melodic album overall As to Watershed, I think it's a bit better than the previous two, slightly going to back to Still Life/B. Thank You! With that settled, I hope, I have been listening to their first 2 albums as well. I must say I rather enjoy them as well! Especially the songs "Black Rose Immortal" and "In Mist She was Standing" Edited by JJLehto - July 31 2009 at 19:24 |

I prefer the RIO thread myself. and you can say I suck, but you have all been duped. It was a joke... Jeez, lighten up people. These are just opinions and jocular actions!
but for real, Opeth is not the be-all, end-all of progressive melodic death metal! tech metal is getting pretty worn out, what with its newfound popularity.... there are still some gems, but it is getting watered down imo. I think many of you came from a Prog background, to enjoying Opeth, which was probably many of your exposure to metal (extreme?) initially; whereas I came to prog from metal, so Opeth just took a lot of old prog styles and blended them with metal.... but their songwriting is lacking in my opinion... I don't think anything will beat the Exivious debut for me (well not at least this year.... maybe for any other year as well). Yes this makes me sound jaded, but after over 2/3 of my life listening to metal, not much new stuff is coming down the pipes... that's why RIO/Avant stuff is eons more interesting to me, unless it's 12tone or dissonant/experimental metal.... all else is rehashing. |

Oh yeah, Exivious: I should check their album (if released AND available in France). I'm not sure it will be a bigger shock than Cynic, Atheist, Coroner or the later Pestilence, but this band seems very promising.

Never knew Vintersorg was on this site!
Great band! Found them a few months ago. It was 100% random and I found them through surfing youtube. Also, I've never been the first ever review of an album! *shameless self gratification* But really, an amazing band I really consider them prog-metal over anything else. Props to the site for having them listed! |

You are aware that Vintersorg is the vocalist in Borknagar who are also present on PA right? If not I guess itīs time to check out some of the later Borknagar albums as well.

I personally prefer Borknagar's "the olden domain" with Garm (Arcturus/Ulver etc.) on vocals- better than later material imo...
vintersorg is hit or miss. the two with Steve DiGiorgio are the best.... "visions from the spiral generator" and "the focusing blur" they are pretty similar and feature the same guest musicians (if I am not mistaken); and are the best.... well, for my tastes at least.
