The Tech/Extreme Prog metal appreciation

For non-prog metal fans I would purchase their two first before the two latest. There you´ll find most of the Marillion influences that everyone is talking about.

It's the fact that they are more obscure (well no longer in the metal underground.... it is sort of trendy to hate them) that makes them that much more attractive to me.  I am an obsessed fanboy of DSO myself... best black metal band in the last 5 years or so.... easily.



On a side note, if anyone is a fan of Gnaw Their Tongues (hopefully you are if you enjoy anything dark musically), you would do well to check out his side-project, De Magia Veterum, a chaotic, raw, technical black metal project that is just killer!

Deathspell Omega along with Blut Aus Nord defintly have made some of the best black metal ever. Fans of abstract/avant-garde type black metal should check out Lurker of Chalice's self titled.

Any fans of Pan.Thy.Monium over here? really good band avant-death band fronted by Edge of Sanity's Dan Swano, some really cool and unusal saxophone parts and a wonderful 20 minute epic.

Yes indeed, can't waid for the Great Misdirect. Only six songs on the album, so it should be in the same format of Colors. Even if they simply rehash Colors it should be excellent.

I never understood what people found so special about Scar Symmetry. Pretty generic melodic Swedish death metal/ metal ( of the most polished kind. Where´s the bite? Where´s the edge?). It´s allright but really! I´ve heard so many band´s playing this style and they don´t really stand out as something special to my ears. Taste is taste of course.

I like the polished kinda though, because it's a different feel the rougher, older school of melo death, so it's different feelings I get from it ya know.
I like how they have 2 vocalists, one doing clean and one growling, it's not something a lot of the melo death bands do.
Maybe not of interest to that many people, but they were hugely responsible for bringing 7 string guitars to the melo death scene and that allows them to get some more unconventional things happening guitar wise that 6 string bands just can't do.
But honestly you can argue many bands play in the style of power metal, thrash metal, prog metal, death metal, doom metal, I just honestly think Scar Symmetry has features to their sound that sets them apart from the band rehashing the old school melodeath sound, and they are about using the newest production values and levels of technique they can on the instrument (it's not hard to see Scar Symmetry have virtuosity more in line with technical metal bands when they go into those kind of sections where the older school melo death bands were less technical in general) to give them the most modern sound they can have and I like that approach personally.

that's alright.  Everyone's experience is subjective.  we can agree to disagree.... but tell me this:  who do they sound like?  I say nobody else that I know of; which alone makes them fairly unique in the metal world.  Amazing to me..... but you know, we've already touched on that topic....
