Post Rock/Post Metal/Math Rock Thread

Sucks living in Florida.... (US) It seems to get left out of every tour for every band i want to see. It's understandable, i wouldn't want to come here either.

At this year's Roskilde Festival I discovered a couple of great bands that are generally seen as part of the "post-rock" genre even though I think that classification is hopelessly vague.

The first are Mono, who probably played my favourite show at RF2009 next to Dragontears... absolutely beautiful music. I really like how their music starts all peaceful and serene and then build up to chaotic noise while maintaining some kind of red thread in the entire "exploring the hollow earth" atmosphere their music has. Very otherworldly while still having a naturalistic atmosphere, if you can call space rock "music of the spheres" then this is more "music of the elements". This is probably the band which finally has convinced me to go further into this entire post-rock business, because what I've read says that Mono are very archetypical of the genre.

The other was the almighty Neurosis, though I prefer to think of them as a somewhat unconventional sludge/doom metal act I guess they go in here still because genre classifications can be a bit slippery. I had heard a couple of songs before, but it wasn't until now they really clicked for me. What I like about Neurosis is that they manage to incorporate lots of artsy techniques without in the slightest compromising their crushing heaviness or pissed-off crust punk attitude. Their music's just so perfectly post-apocalyptic, conjuring up imagery of savage post-industrial scavenger tribes doing battle with each others, radioactive mutant monsters and the occasional invading alien robots across a surrealistic blasted wasteland.

Pretty funny that the two post-rock/metal bands I saw at Roskilde are more or less polar opposites in mood and attitude, isn't it?

^ I think Canopy Glow is even better. I really fell in love with Anathallo. If you want to listen to just really clever, well crafted songs that's your ticket. Also they put on one of the most entertaining live shows I've ever seen.

They're both absolutely incredible bands so their mood doesn't really matter...

They were doing a double header like two months ago in Philly; I was stocked to go to both shows but too many people needed tutoring due a calc final being the next day so I couldn't turn down everyone and missed both shows.

guys, i have just listened The Capricorns - River, Bear Your Bones and it is stunning album. a Masterpiece i can say , i am amazed, such a great tunes, it is instrumental metal it its very best .. i cannot describe with words my thrill about this piece of music. crushing..atmospheric..melody .. beautiful..

^^ it is not post rock . good album anyway
