I've heard Dream Theater several times before, can't remember when I did though, as I really couldn't get into the music... Yesterday I decided to give it another shot, and I watched a video of A Mind beside Itself on youtube, I realized it's a fantastic song! So I guess my first REAL listen was yesterday.Embarrassed

I first heard them in 2002.  My brother and I got tickets to a Joe Satriani/DT co-headlining tour (King's X opened!!!).  Satch was supporting his Strange Beautiful Music album, and DT 6DOIT.  Before I went to the show, I had picked up a compilation CD with a bucnh of metal/rock songs on it.  The cd was my introduction to DT (a radio edit of "Pull Me Under") and Kings X ("Black Flag").

At the concert, Dream Theater opened their set with "Pull Me Under", and since we never heard the full version of the song, we were blown away when the "Watch the sparrow falling" part came in.  It still ranks among my favorite concert experiences.

Heh, here's an odd coincidence, I was introduced to King's X at about the same time as I was introduced to Dream Theater by the same Bass player.

Nice. Smile
Unfortunately, King's X had horrible sound as most openers get in a bigger venue (Toronto's Molson Amphitheater).  I can recall them playing "Over My Head" and "We Were Born To Be Loved", but not much else stands out especially since their only song I knew at the time was "Black Flag" which I wasn't fond of at the time but it grew on me.

I saw them in 92 (King's X) and had a somewhat similar in that I only had heard "Black Flag" prior to seeing them.  Luckily, it was a small venue with them headlining and the sound was great.  "Over My Head" remains one of my most memorable concert experiences ever.

They're headlining my local Progressive Rock festival this year and I've really been listening to them a lot lately.

I bought Awake in 2004. A kid I used to play Starcraft with mentioned them once and I wanted to try something new so I bought the cd blind.

I believe it was 2007, when Octavarium came out. I was over at a friend's house and we started watching the "Live at Budokan" DVD. He lent me a copy of Octavarium and I really enjoyed them.

I should also add that after seeing Dream Theater in concert in 2002, the first album I picked up of theirs was Awake.  It is still one of my favorite DT albums.  If I recall correctly they played "The Mirror", "6:00", and possibly another song or 2 from Awke that evening.  I used to have a copy of the setlist for the show, but I can't find it or the website I retrieved it.

In 2007, but before SC came out. The first song I've heard by them was Six Degrees' Overture and the first full album was Octavarium. Now I'm a fan who owns every DVD of them and two studio albums, + the DSotM bootleg and watched them this week live Smile

2007. I got a demo CD with a rock mag, which had Porcupine Tree, Megadeth, Opeth, and DT on it. I enjoyed their song, so I bought an album of theirs. Octavarium. I loved it immediately, and over the last two years, i have bought their entire discography.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

2004 I believe? Long before I was into Metal or Prog, or even Rock extensively. I was very young, and only listened to a couple of songs. I thought it was really friggin heavy. Embarrassed I was such a fool... They were recomended to me by my Warhammer 40k freind. LOLLOLLOL Most people in that community listened to prog: The fantasy guys liked classic stuff like Rush and the sci-fi guys liked prog/power metal like Dream Theater... LOL

2003. i had a burnt mix cd with The Glass Prison on it, and immediately loved it. Bought Train of Thought when it came out and worked my way backwards chronologically. Octavarium was the first album to come out while being an actual fan and knowing their material, and that album changed my life. been a fan ever since.

I have to say that I wasn't exactly blown away at first.  However, I got hold of the CD, 'Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory' a couple of weeks ago and I have listened to it about a dozen times. I love this album. It's one of the best concept albums I've ever heard.

So, inspired by this, I will definitely be buying more Dream Theater albums in the near future.

I wonder if I'm the most recent newcomer to Dream Theater in this forum?

aha! a Prog veteran!
Images and Words is garbage... (in my opinion)
Scenes however, I share the same opinion as you. It's the only real DT album, and a true masterpeice of Progressive concept music. It still hasn't gotten old for me, I've heard it maybe a hundred times, at least. Since I've gotten this new computer of mine about 5 months ago, the album has 29 plays on my WMP. Just imagine the last 6 years I've had the album. LOL

2007 for me as well. I heard them when we were visiting family in Cananda and we got to sleep in my nephew's room. There in a stack of CDs was SDOS and upon playing the first track I was hooked. Since then  I have since bought pretty much everything they have done and seen them on both their UK tours since then.

It was Christmas 2008, when my brother (Roj M30 on here) bought me Scenes From A Memory as a gift.  It took me a few listens but one day it "clicked" and I absolutely love it now.  DT are one of my fave bands now and I'm gradually collecting all their albums.

I first heard dream theater in year 2007 when I get curious about the melody and the lyrics of Spirit Carries On and it's the first time I also heard progressive music.

I first heard Dream Theatre back in '94, right after Awake came out. From day one I hated LaBrie's vocal style, but I persisted in listening on account of the phenomenal musicianship ...then I lost interest around '95.

1998--a bloke introduced me to LTE 2. Then checked out DT, shrugged, went back to LTE. Where I happily remain. For me, I guess Levin is the difference maker.

1994 - a friend of mine gave me the Images and Words album on cassette LOL. So I've been enjoying DT in big or small doses since then.
