Dream Theater have been around some time now I thought it may be fun perhaps even sentimental to ask when you first heard them, what year it was for this may even be a little bit of a challenge to remember for some people, I was a little late it was when the awake album came out I remember hearing about a band that was a little heavy yet complex in the way Kansas Yes and some other prog bands were complex ..  so I ordered Images and words and Awake from my local music store..  I was blown away !   .. 1994 Awake came out but I think it was early 95 I heard them first. In 2005 they spread through my group of friends. I was introduced to them through some tracks off Octavarium.

2004, I downloaded TOT and I&W simultaneusly. I think the first I heard from them was As I Am, but I didn't like it very much at first, plus the archive that I downloaded didn't sounded very well Ouch.
I&W I liked a lot more from first listen, but still didn't blew me away until the third listening or so, when it made a "click" in my head, and actually TOT is one of my fave albums from DT. I kept downloading all their stuff available then, until they released Octavarium, wich I purchased days after it came out. Then I bought all their studio albums (except WDADU) and all their official DVD's. So, I guess I'm a fan of theirs. Embarrassed

On that DVD, my dad bought as a one-off...

Funny enough, I lent it to two of my friends who were into Metallica, and now they both own the DT discography - And all for 8.99$

Although I have been listening to Prog Rock since 1979, I only listened to my first Dream Theater album a few months ago.  It was on this website that I asked for recommendations - following the responses, I bought a copy of  'Images and Words'. I have to say that I wasn't exactly blown away at first.  However, I got hold of the CD, 'Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory' a couple of weeks ago and I have listened to it about a dozen times. I love this album. It's one of the best concept albums I've ever heard.

So, inspired by this, I will definitely be buying more Dream Theater albums in the near future.

I wonder if I'm the most recent newcomer to Dream Theater in this forum?

The first album I heard was Six Degrees, so it had to be after 2001. I think it was 2003. I was deathly obsessed with them, and DT was almost a part of my life. I bought every album and listen to them 24/7. I still listen to them a lot, but I've been listening to Pain of Salvation and Opeth more lately.Big smile

1992.  The video for Pull Me Under was playing on MTV and on my local hard rock/heavy metal radio station and I was immediately hooked and went out and bought Images and Words, and shortly thereafter When Dream and Day Unite.

2002.  Vapor Trails came out and I bought it on Amazon.  They said, "hey, you might like Dream Theater."  So I bought Scenes and loved it, then I went with 6 degrees and remember it had just come out.  Bridge Across Forever and Unfold the Future came next and I was back into prog again, never realizing it had really never left from when I got into it in the 80's.

Holy moly, it's frankly hard to imagine younger people liking Dream Theater when they are so enmeshed in the 80's metal tradition. Myself, being a metal head in the late 80's, was moderately interested in 92 when Pull Me Under came out. Frankly, there were dozens if not hundreds of guys with Pertucci's chops at that point. In 1993 I joined a band where all the other members worshipped DT (including the guy who opened up the rest of prog for me) and so I bought I&W and then Awake. We went to the Awake tour, which was a lot of fun. He lent me Scenes from a Memory and I just couldn't get into it. Lot of fond memories because that band was some of the most fun I had.

2002. I read a very favourable review of Six Degrees... in Classic Rock Magazine and seeing as I was in the market for new prog I purchased it. It was the first metal album of any type that I purchased and having not listened to much metal before, The Glass Prison was quite a baptism of fire!
I'm glad I persevered however because now I thoroughly enjoy a good bit of metal/hard rock!

1995, watching "headbanger''s" in MTV LATINO in my country.... The video for "Pull Me Under"... Incredibly, ironically, that day I hated it, because Labrie commited the "crime of wearing a Napalm Death shirt while singing like a lady"... (my words back THEN)... In 1997 I finally fully embraced Images and Words and everything changed.

I first heard them in 2002.  My brother and I got tickets to a Joe Satriani/DT co-headlining tour (King's X opened!!!).  Satch was supporting his Strange Beautiful Music album, and DT 6DOIT.  Before I went to the show, I had picked up a compilation CD with a bucnh of metal/rock songs on it.  The cd was my introduction to DT (a radio edit of "Pull Me Under") and Kings X ("Black Flag").

At the concert, Dream Theater opened their set with "Pull Me Under", and since we never heard the full version of the song, we were blown away when the "Watch the sparrow falling" part came in.  It still ranks among my favorite concert experiences.

1992.

My band had a gig at a local high school one night, so we set up everything that afternoon.  After we did the sound check, my bass player pulled this tape out and threw it into the PA system.  The whole band and sound crew sat there for the next hour listening to all of Images and Words through the big speakers.  I was blown away.  Sadly, I seem to have lost track of the bass player, but Dream Theater has had a special place in my heard since then.

Incidentally, I first saw them on my 21st birthday in January of 1993. . . goodness, where has the time gone.

2006 , although I didn't like the band back then. I was into power metal at the time , and I bought an MP3 expecting to hear something like Angra , Stratovarius or Sonata Artica.

I was really dissapointed: I couldn't understand the music , Stratovarius had much more energy and Kotipelto had a better voice. Besides , they weren't fast enough.
Two years later , I had heard much more exprimental music but still couldn't dig DT. Slowly I began to appreciate the band and recognoise their prog credentials.

I think it was 1994.  A friend of mine gave me a cassette tape of Images and Words.  I liked it okay at first, but after a couple of years, where it sat shelved most of the time, I started to appreciate what they were doing.  I began listening to it regularly, and then the tape got munched.  Cry It took a few more years for me to get around to replacing it.  Perhaps seeing them open for Deep Purple helped me appreciate them more.

Warning: Nostalgia trip ahead.

I had been listening to Deep Purple for more than 30 years before I got a chance to see them live, and I really enjoyed their performance.  Dream Theater opened the show and played for close to an hour.  They were scheduled for only 30 minutes, I think.  LaBrie kept apologizing for playing too long - and then they'd go into another ten minute extrvaganza.  I didn't mind, but it delayed the end of the concert enough that we (my girlfriend at the time and my buddy who turned me on to DT in the first place) could not take the mass transit out of town.  So we paid $40 for a cab.  It was worth it.  Did I mention there was another band?  Emerson Lake and Palmer.  How's that for a show?  Dream Theater, ELP, and Deep Purple. Thumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs Up

Unfortunately, King's X had horrible sound as most openers get in a bigger venue (Toronto's Molson Amphitheater).  I can recall them playing "Over My Head" and "We Were Born To Be Loved", but not much else stands out especially since their only song I knew at the time was "Black Flag" which I wasn't fond of at the time but it grew on me.

I saw them in 92 (King's X) and had a somewhat similar in that I only had heard "Black Flag" prior to seeing them.  Luckily, it was a small venue with them headlining and the sound was great.  "Over My Head" remains one of my most memorable concert experiences ever.

They're headlining my local Progressive Rock festival this year and I've really been listening to them a lot lately.

I thought it was really friggin heavy. Embarrassed I was such a fool... They were recomended to me by my Warhammer 40k freind. LOLLOLLOL Most people in that community listened to prog: The fantasy guys liked classic stuff like Rush and the sci-fi guys liked prog/power metal like Dream Theater... LOL

Images and Words is garbage... (in my opinion)
Scenes however, I share the same opinion as you. It's the only real DT album, and a true masterpeice of Progressive concept music. It still hasn't gotten old for me, I've heard it maybe a hundred times, at least. Since I've gotten this new computer of mine about 5 months ago, the album has 29 plays on my WMP. Just imagine the last 6 years I've had the album. LOL

I first heard Dream Theatre back in '94, right after Awake came out. From day one I hated LaBrie's vocal style, but I persisted in listening on account of the phenomenal musicianship ...then I lost interest around '95.

1998--a bloke introduced me to LTE 2. Then checked out DT, shrugged, went back to LTE. Where I happily remain. For me, I guess Levin is the difference maker.

1994 - a friend of mine gave me the Images and Words album on cassette LOL. So I've been enjoying DT in big or small doses since then.

I don't remember the exact year I heard them, but it would have been early or mid 90s. My sister had several of their albums. It was often on in the background. I liked Caught in a Web and Pull Me under but didn't give it much thought. I heard Space Dye Vest and fell in love with the song. I bought Awake and liked it. But I really became a fan when I picked of Scenes From a Memory.

2003-2004. I remember being retrospectively pissed that I didn't catch them with Yes when they toured in my city (no one prog ever comes here, let alone non-prog), and Octavarium was the first album I got on its release day.
