OK I'll give you Motorhead but they debuted first album in 1977, and:  "the band was part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which re-energized heavy metal in the late '70s and early '80s"

granted wiki is not the best souyrce for metal history but Encyclopedia Metallum doesn't have NWoBHM as a genre (nor a history page Confused)

Ozzy - though perhaps (and understandably) not thought of by Brits as part of NWoBHM - was absolutely involved in how the whole movement emerged in the U.S., particularly the Bay Area where NWoBHM had its home away from home.

So yeah, I guess most don't include Motorhead or Ozzy in with the rest.  But they should.

Yeah - Ozzy didn't inaugurate the OzzFest for nothing - he was father figure to quite a few new bands and thus influential on the scene. Still don't agree with Motorhead thoTongue

I still have that album somewhere... also featured Nutz (formerley known as Rage - or was it the other way around???); I also remember a free album given away with 'Sounds' in about 1980ish - tabloid sized music paper giving away a 12" album with each copy... those were the days

Another "where-are-they-now?" from the ranks of NWOBHM... Quartz! Bloody good Brummie band as I remember

They (Quartz) recorded a fine version of Mountain's Nantucket Sleighride for Reddington's Rare Records.

I remember scanning Reddington's Rare Records adverts in the back of Sounds every week.Ah. The memories...

Has anyone mentioned Motorhead's protoges,Girlschool yet? Definately NWOBHM.I saw them support Motorhead at Hammy Odeon @ 1980.

I also saw them support Tygers of Pan Tang. A couple members of the band were regular drinkers at The Lonsdale in Portobello Road.
The Lonsdale is a Samuel Smiths pub and in the late 70s/early 80s, you could open the doors to the pub and bump into assorted Pink Fairies, members of Hawkwind,Inner City Unit,Edgar Broughton Band and Julian Lennon! Yep.That's right Julian Lennon. He formed and short lived band with Lemmy's 'Son'.Paul someone or other?
A great boozer.It smelled of pachouli,Samuel Smith's Museum Ale,cider,Newcastle Brown Ale,and motorbike sump oil.A heady mixture indeed.
Most of my Saturdays from 1979-1981 were spent in and around Portobello Road. This was mainly because of the Notting Hill Record and Tape Exchange. I would buy about half a dozen albums.Go down Portobello Road buy a few 'grandad shirts',waistcoats etc. pop into The Lonsdale for a pint or six.Nip upto the HMV in Notting Hill Gate. This branch was a very small one and it was run by a metallist who would ,once you were in with him' give you promo albums for nothing.I remember him giving me a copy of Cozy Powell's 'Over The Top' album.

I would then head off home to S.E. London,Have something to eat and either go upto THe Marquee or to a pub in Greenwich called The Swan to see either Dumpy's Rusty Nuts or Purple Haze. And all for £1 and eleventy-twelve pence.

Another of my old haunts - not sure about an album/band? Buy their album 2nd hand for 50p & check them out (after participating in the usual ritual of inspecting the condition of said vinyl at the counter of course).

Ah memories...

Oh yes - in the 1970's / 1980's I smelt of patchouili as well

It makes it progressive related or crossover prog or prog metal or in PA's case none of the above.  LOL

Loads of excellent bargains could be had especially in the basement of the branch in Pembroke Villas? I found Spooky Tooths's first album on the 'pink' Island Record label and loads of Vertigo 'swirl' label albums.

I also found a few extra-curricular substances in some of the albums that I bought! Stashes hidden and subsequently lost.

I also found a 'dear John' letter in the end of the fold-out sleeve of Fruup's Prince of Heaven's Eyes album.

yeah Girlschool toured S.F. a few times, plus the whole Motorhead/St. Valentine's Day Massacre thing, kind of a novelty to see an all-girl metal band (I use the term 'metal' lightly)

Kim McAuliffe used to be with a band called Painted Lady with Deirdre Cartwright (Jam Today & others) and three other girls. Our lot used to see them at The Two Brewers in Clapham and The Ship in Parsons Green/Wandsworth loads of times. Kim's mum once actually conned me & some of my mates into joining her in a sponsored wheelchair push in aid in aid of Roehampton Hospital. Our gig fee was a free half in each of the 16 pubs we passed en route! I've still got some pics somewhere. We all used to call her "Mrs C" after Richie Cunningham's mum in Happy Days 'cos she was so cool & attractive! Went round chez McAuliffe quite a few times during that glorious summer of '76 - although I lived well North of the river it seemed I hardly went home all summer.

Kim was really nice but back then she was second singer and rhythm with Painted Lady; when she fronted the band when they played as a three-piece (The Ship) she was so nervous it wasn't true, particularly when it came to lead. We used to give them a lot of good-natured stick, that's for sure. They'd do stuff like Live Wire, Hey Joe, Long Train Runnin'.  Used to hang around in that crowd quite a bit for a while. A few years later I read about Girlschool and couldn't believe Kim had done so well - could not have happened to a nicer girl tho.Tongue

Never saw Girlschool, at all, just one of the precursors about 50 times - all free of courseApprove
