Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Even if I dislike a vocal style, I am glad it exists, if for no other reason than to enhance and expand upon the overall musical palette I am able to subject myself to.
ClapClapClap Excellent post, I agree with you %100.

Of course, what is the point of LaBrie's completely over-the-top vibrato when performing live?

Daniel Gildenlow is not as bad as Labrie, and I actually think that Russell Allen's voice is better than Gildenlow's (not a fan of his falsetto at all).  I've just never been able to find somebody that doesn't make it sound corny.  The only time I enjoy operatic vocals is when they're female.  Something about a solid operatic female vocalist stirs my loins!  The only male that sings quasi-operatic that I enjoy a great deal is Tim Bowness of No-Man.  But he's still more on the contemporary side.  Hmm, I guess Roy Khan of Kamelot also makes the band what it is, and they are a pretty decent group.

So I guess I retract my statement of saying that it has no place in rock/metal music.  But I still stand by my sentiments and say that I rarely find it adding a positive characteristic to the music haha!

The only thing Dream Theater really need to do is never to pay any attention to what's said in "What does DT need to do" threads...

Dream Theater (along with most other prog metal bands) would be awesome with a more contemporary-voiced vocalist.

I hate listening to an awesome song and then have Labrie come in with his ****ty falsetto and ruin the band's style.  I'm sorry, for Labrie fans, or Russell Allen fans or Daniel Gildenlow fans, but there's just no place for those vocals in rock/metal.  No doubt they're superbly talented singers, and I used to be in to that whole thing, but it just makes each word they sing sound extremely cheesy.  That's the root of any prog-metal band's problem; vocals!

Just my opinion, don't want to offend!

I think they should write an 8-hour opera and then quit.

The new album fixes some of these areas a bit.

plus they just need to stop sucking, their last good album was change of seasons. after that they just plain suck.

Agreed! Look at what KM has done solo and with OSI. That type of thing would be welcome to me with Myung and Petrucci.
