Following advice given on this website I've just bought a copy of 'Images and Words' by Dream Theater.  I've only listened to it once but I'm not very impressed.  To me it sounds like fairly unexceptional poodle-haired pop metal. The lyrics are awful and the singer is too full on all the time.  The posed 'glam' photos of the band tell you exactly what the music sounds like.  The only thing I like is the drumming.  Perhaps I should get hold of one of their later albums.

Based on your colorful description of the album, I wouldn't bother.

Your description is spot on and you definitely should not bother getting a hold of their later albums. There's plenty of good prog bands out there but Dream Theater is not one of them.

Green Shield, I completely agree. Images & Words is lousy, and your description fits.  I must disagree with the Gnome, however- Scenes from a Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence are both phenomenal- this coming from someone who doesn't care too much for metal.

Scenes from a Memory has some good moments but Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is about 95 minutes longer than it needs to be. The only one of theirs I find has some actual passion is Octavarium (and the drumming is phenomenal). The rest, for the most part, is poodle-haired w**kery from a bunch of guys who are too skilled for their own good.

Damn... You folks are gonna hate me now. Tongue
