One of the few things that makes me proud to be Swedish is Pain Of Salvation. They don´t care for mass approval, this year they´ve released 12:5 an acoustic cd with old favourites, not a wise move for a metal act. Then they release another cd called BE and this must be the least commercial cd of their career. I´m proud of POS for being brave enough to release these cds, when the "Fans" just wants  Perfect Element 2. Now we will see who the real fans are, the ones who love POS music , metal or no metal.

I was actually gently trying to make a point of be careful what you wish for. I used to like the Violent Femmes and the Cult when they 1st started but didn't like the route they took later....same goes for Genesis. It is not a measure of how good of fans one is or not. Pink Floyd managed to make many different sounding albums without changing what they're essentially about. Indeed I would not want to hear the Dark Side of the Moon done over and over again...but I think a band can stay in the same genre and still release a totally fresh album.

Pain of Salvation is brilliant band. I have all their cd´s, and I can´t find even one weak track of  these albums. In Finland, we don´t have anything like Pain of Salvation. Sure we got great metal bands, but prog-metal genre is... well, quiet.

When I listen to this band, there is very beatiful, and harmonic moments, then it turns very heavy, and dark... it makes nice contrast. I like that!

Oh yeah...
I don't like Prog Metal this much, mainly because all bands try to sound like Dream Theater. I like Dream Theater but the best prog metal band for sure is Pain of Salvation. They're so different, they do what they want t do, I love their sound, Gildenlöw's voice ( wow)...
I really loved the acoustic album and I also like the new one. Even though I think that "Entropia" is still their best one...

If you don't know them, check them out immediately...even if you don't like it, Gildelöw's vocals are worth the money alone

Thanks for the link, Velvetclown!

I sure like progressive metal like Dream Theater, Pain Of Salvation, Vanden Plas, Spiral Architect, Pagan´s Mind, Symphony X, Dead Soul Tribe...you name it!
and  also "softer" stuff like Spock´s Beard, Rush, Jadis, Ozric Tentacles, Steve Hackett, Chroma Key and Paatos

...and of course The Flower Kings. What a great swedish band too.

It was intresting what I read about Pain Of Salvation at progarchives.com,
that this band was called REALITY when these guys started at 1984.
The singer/guitarist Daniel Gildenlow was 11 years old! Only the name of the band has changed since those days.

My stupid Metallica-wannabe bands lasted one year at max

I think POS are a good quality prog/metal band although not my favourite. I only have one of their albums, Remedy Lane. Its a really good album which i have listened too many times. I particually like their acoustic work. Some of POS songs are very random and rubbish in my opinion and others are master pieces. Good band  but lacking the (dare i say it) X-factor
Long live progression.

Personally, I don't care for Prog Metal.  I'm not saying it's bad, I just don't care to be beaten about the head with sonic hammers. Dream Theater, while technically brilliant (see that thread), give me headaches with the chugging power chords and horribly over the top hair band vocals. Ease up and quit shouting.

POS "12.5" is incredible (Thanks diddy, I still in MP3 purgatory) and I really enjoy Dead Soul Tribe's acoustic and flute based tunes (Time, Black Smoke and Mirrors) as well as Opeth's "Damnation." I would like to find more heavy acoustic prog. That would be the Shizznits for this bald old cat. That underlying power vibe that cuts, yet maintains an acceptable volume to my mature ears.

Give me more of that.

Well, some people say that POS is a Pain In The Donkey, but I do not agree. There´s no better band in Sweden.

to danbo, a few metal bands, some less progressive than others that have done acoustic albums:

Empyrium's "Weiland" album, it's neo folk, no electric guitars at all although it does have about two or three minutes of screamed vocals;

One of Ulver's mid period albums, but I can't remember its name;

Agalloch may be a bit extreme in the vocal department, but very tuneful and folky in their instruments, at least on the tracks I can remember;

finally anything on the "Prophecy" label is very atmospheric and very tuneful, but ranging all over the spectrum from metal to folk, so I don't know how much of it you'll enjoy. http://www.prophecyproductions.de/prophecy_en/index.php is the link, anyway, Elend being a band I like a lot but who sometimes have screaming vocals.

BE is a conceptual masterpiece and will remain one of my favorite albums forever. Although I'm only 14 so I'm still going through it getting what the meaning of the album is, heh.

I use to have a copy of 'Remedy Lane' but I thought it was terrible.  Daniel kept doing this really bad mouth percussion thing through the songs, which were already uninteresting and annoying enough.  The best one was an instumental, but even that was a little dry.  I really don't see how people think they're so good.

Haha, every man to their own. I personally enjoy Daniel's "mouth percussion", reminds me of Brandon Boyd from Incubus's "mouth percussion". And by the way, Remedy Lane is a masterpiece!
