One of the few things that makes me proud to be Swedish is Pain Of Salvation. They don´t care for mass approval, this year they´ve released 12:5 an acoustic cd with old favourites, not a wise move for a metal act. Then they release another cd called BE and this must be the least commercial cd of their career. I´m proud of POS for being brave enough to release these cds, when the "Fans" just wants  Perfect Element 2. Now we will see who the real fans are, the ones who love POS music , metal or no metal.

I was actually gently trying to make a point of be careful what you wish for. I used to like the Violent Femmes and the Cult when they 1st started but didn't like the route they took later....same goes for Genesis. It is not a measure of how good of fans one is or not. Pink Floyd managed to make many different sounding albums without changing what they're essentially about. Indeed I would not want to hear the Dark Side of the Moon done over and over again...but I think a band can stay in the same genre and still release a totally fresh album.

Pain of Salvation is brilliant band. I have all their cd´s, and I can´t find even one weak track of  these albums. In Finland, we don´t have anything like Pain of Salvation. Sure we got great metal bands, but prog-metal genre is... well, quiet.

When I listen to this band, there is very beatiful, and harmonic moments, then it turns very heavy, and dark... it makes nice contrast. I like that!

Oh yeah...
I don't like Prog Metal this much, mainly because all bands try to sound like Dream Theater. I like Dream Theater but the best prog metal band for sure is Pain of Salvation. They're so different, they do what they want t do, I love their sound, Gildenlöw's voice ( wow)...
I really loved the acoustic album and I also like the new one. Even though I think that "Entropia" is still their best one...

If you don't know them, check them out immediately...even if you don't like it, Gildelöw's vocals are worth the money alone

Thanks for the link, Velvetclown!

I sure like progressive metal like Dream Theater, Pain Of Salvation, Vanden Plas, Spiral Architect, Pagan´s Mind, Symphony X, Dead Soul Tribe...you name it!
and  also "softer" stuff like Spock´s Beard, Rush, Jadis, Ozric Tentacles, Steve Hackett, Chroma Key and Paatos

...and of course The Flower Kings. What a great swedish band too.

It was intresting what I read about Pain Of Salvation at progarchives.com,
that this band was called REALITY when these guys started at 1984.
The singer/guitarist Daniel Gildenlow was 11 years old! Only the name of the band has changed since those days.

My stupid Metallica-wannabe bands lasted one year at max

I think POS are a good quality prog/metal band although not my favourite. I only have one of their albums, Remedy Lane. Its a really good album which i have listened too many times. I particually like their acoustic work. Some of POS songs are very random and rubbish in my opinion and others are master pieces. Good band  but lacking the (dare i say it) X-factor

Personally, I don't care for Prog Metal.  I'm not saying it's bad, I just don't care to be beaten about the head with sonic hammers. Dream Theater, while technically brilliant (see that thread), give me headaches with the chugging power chords and horribly over the top hair band vocals. Ease up and quit shouting.

POS "12.5" is incredible (Thanks diddy, I still in MP3 purgatory) and I really enjoy Dead Soul Tribe's acoustic and flute based tunes (Time, Black Smoke and Mirrors) as well as Opeth's "Damnation." I would like to find more heavy acoustic prog. That would be the Shizznits for this bald old cat. That underlying power vibe that cuts, yet maintains an acceptable volume to my mature ears.

Give me more of that.

to danbo, a few metal bands, some less progressive than others that have done acoustic albums:

Empyrium's "Weiland" album, it's neo folk, no electric guitars at all although it does have about two or three minutes of screamed vocals;

One of Ulver's mid period albums, but I can't remember its name;

Agalloch may be a bit extreme in the vocal department, but very tuneful and folky in their instruments, at least on the tracks I can remember;

finally anything on the "Prophecy" label is very atmospheric and very tuneful, but ranging all over the spectrum from metal to folk, so I don't know how much of it you'll enjoy. http://www.prophecyproductions.de/prophecy_en/index.php - http://www.prophecyproductions.de/prophecy_en/index.php  is the link, anyway, Elend being a band I like a lot but who sometimes have screaming vocals.

BE is a conceptual masterpiece and will remain one of my favorite albums forever. Although I'm only 14 so I'm still going through it getting what the meaning of the album is, heh.

I use to have a copy of 'Remedy Lane' but I thought it was terrible.  Daniel kept doing this really bad mouth percussion thing through the songs, which were already uninteresting and annoying enough.  The best one was an instumental, but even that was a little dry.  I really don't see how people think they're so good.

I'm not very keen for Prog-Metal, I used to like Dream Theater but I quit listening to them when they released that piece of Metallica-and-Pantera-like crap "Train Of Thought". Then one my friend told me "Try Pain Of Salvation, they don't sound like Dream Theater". So I got their "The Perfect Element" album and fell in love with this band. Then I've gotten all their albums and they all are exceptional. I like their sound, sometimes reminding me Alice Of Chains or Faith No More but the compositions are very strong and Gildenlow's voice is very beautiful. I thought "The Perfect Element" is a hard to beat album but then I bought "BE" and I said "WOOOWWW!!!". Probably one of the best albums ever. Some time ago I discovered THRESHOLD and I'm fascinated by their music, so I found Dream Theater is no longer interesting for me. Thank PoS and Threshold for opening my eyes

Great band, but Gildenlow's vocal delivery can be just as annoying as LaBrie's.

There is absolutely nothing in Opeth that reminds me of Dream Theater..

To clarify it to people, Dream Theater are influenced by Heavy Metal, some Thrash Metal, Progressive Rock, while on the other hand, Opeth is influenced by Black/Death Metal, Doom Metal and Progressive Rock. The Progressive influence is even different since Opeth is more influenced by Psychodelic Rock, while Dream Theater is influenced by Art Rock or Symphonic Rock.

Easy as that and DT does not have a growler like Mikael... Which makes the music extremely different. Opeth also does not "wank", it is purely atmospheric.

In all honesty I never hear any thrash on DT albums - they seem to be inspired by the bits of Metallica that aren't very thrashy, and that's about the closet they get . Maybe the first album differs - I haven't heard it.

To be honest, the first album doesn't differ much on the 'heaviosity' scale...

The first album is not even close to what Metallica is. It sounds very much like Queensryche with Bass solos, better drummer, better guitar solos and Kevin Moore's amazing keyboarding skils. Probably one of the best first albums ever along with POS' Entropia and Pink Floyd's Piper.

Posted By: goose
Date Posted: June 04 2005 at 18:36

I don't care much for either of those albums compared to the respective bands' later works, so maybe the DT debut isn't my cup of tea either .

It's not just the heaviness I'm talking about, but the actual style. Having listened to a fair bit of early '80s thrash in the last couple of days (inspired by Certif1ed's old musical endeavours , and free absolutely dire quality streams on http://www.vibrationsofdoom.com - www.vibrationsofdoom.com ) Metallica seem less and less a part of the same sound that most thrashers belonged to (except Slayer and similar, who're something different again), and while I can hear similarities between DT and Metallica, it's not the Battery or the (first track on AJFA, I forget the name ) moments, it's the more "heavy metal" than "thrash metal" bits... awkwardly explained but I hope at least someone understands what I'm thinking

BTW, to the ones that are bashing eminem, why dont you give rapping a try and see if you dont sound like a complete ass.  rapping takes talent, and is just as valid a form of music as prog is.  there is no "good" or "bad" when it comes to music, there are only preferences...

i personally think that inconsistent is definitely the wrong word to use. "varied" is much more fitting. i can see why there are some songs some people like more than others, and there are definitely songs which i didn't like when i first listenened to them. however, after sticking with PoS and listening to each album a good few times, the songs i originally hated seem to be becoming my favourites!

as for the vocals... to me they sound consistantly amazing throughout. Daniel Gildenlow has an amazing voice... i love it, and i don't understand why so many people have a problem with it.

Pain Of Salvation is my favorite band of all time and one of the few continuously progressive bands. I don't care if they're metal, I appreciate them as a progressive band, not a metal band. Be is incredible and one of the most original albums since the early 70's. I am a true fan of pos, (especially since I like RL and Be BETTER than TPE. But still, I'm exited for the sequel)

BTW, to the ones that are bashing eminem, why dont you give rapping a try and see if you dont sound like a complete ass.  rapping takes talent, and is just as valid a form of music as prog is.  there is no "good" or "bad" when it comes to music, there are only preferences...

Hey Colin,

I think you've got lost and found yourself in the wrong forum... here you are amongst a group of mild mannered lentil eating hippies who wear loud waistcoats and cords... sadly not a baseball cap, tattoo, jump suit, item of jewellery or bad attitude anywhere in sight... here we are completely BLING free!

did you read what i said?

i said that i love DG, his singing, his compositions, everything!

i like a lot of prog music (thats why im here) but i am also open minded enough to realize that rap, metal, country, folk, r & b, blues, any type of music you can come up w/ is just as valid and musical as the "almighty prog".  prog is no better than any other type or gengre of music.  it just cannot be argued.  i am not saying that i listen to all those other genres i listed.  like i said before, i listen to mostly prog.  what i am saying is that there is value in ALL forms of music.

Since when can't it be argued? I think prog takes more talent than rap and I could back it up with details, as could many people here. Who says some forms of music can't be better than others?

uh, the whole point of music is that its subjective.  and the fact that one form may take more "talent" is meaningless.  theres no such thing as good or bad music, its just what appeals to you.  that doesnt make other music "bad", does it?  BTW, can you rap?  rapping takes talent.  (BTW, just so you know, i am NOT a fan of rap.)

what do you think of daniel gildenlow "rapping" (more of a "rap-core" style) in Used?

i agree with colin007 to a certain extent... just because you don't think some music is good, doesn't mean it isn't good. i can appreciate that eminem is talented and i can see why his music appeals to many people. that said... i personally can't stand it.

thats exactly what im saying.  im not saying you have to like it (like i said, i dont), just dont think that its a "lesser" form of musical expression.

Rapping takes as much talent lyrically as any other genre, the only tricky part is rhythm, which isn't terribly challenging. Daniel Gildenlow didn't really rap so much as he spoke the lyrics. Rapping is usually done in a certain rhythm, and he had none.

Anyway, music can be bad. If something with one note as a melody and terribly written lyrics with no taste incorporated comes around, it's bad music. There are few examples of this, but occasionally there is an artist with no skills and no business making music. Eminem isn't really an example though, his music isn't bad.

Yep, agreed. I don't like Eminem, but he's certainly not as bad as Vanilla Ice

About Daniel's "rapping", its not really 'rapping", its more like rhythmic talking more than anything else.

Pain of Salvation is an incredible band, and The Perfect Element holds a special place in my heart...Remedy Lane is also an amazing album.  I think the band reached its apex with those two masterpieces.  I like BE, but it doesnt have the soul of other PoS releases and i think that Daniel focused too much on cocept while ignoring his incredible talent to make great music.  But when it gets down to it, I would say Pain of Salvation is my favorite band and i cant wait to see them play sometime in the states.  I can see how some people wouldn't like them, as they are a very aquired taste.  But i like it that way...i dont think people who listen to 50 Cent and Fat Joe deserve to hear Pain of Salvation...

basically.

its like food.  is there good or bad food?  yeah, theres junk food, but there is nothing inherently wrong with it, as long as you eat in moderation.  would it make sense to say "food x is bad."?  and w/ music, there is no good or bad.  just cos you dont like it doesnt make it bad.

So if I ate food that tasted like dung and gave me indigestion, I couldn't say it was bad food?

why would you eat it if it tasted like dung?  thats just stupid.

lets try a different illustration.  lets say you like certain genres of literature, and i dont really like that genre or author.  can i honestly say that your book choice is bad?  how can a book be bad?  if someone likes it, then thats all that matters!

What if it's a genre you like, are well-read, love huge amounts of it but can't stand this one book?

Posted By: FishyMonkey

^Then it has themes are something going through it that you don't like, or it's missing something that the other books have FOR YOU. Maybe someone else hates the other books but loves that one.

See, I don't like Genesis very much...at all, but I love Yes, Krimson, GG, VDGG, Spock's Beard and a couple others. Does that make Genesis bad? Uh, no. That just makes them not to my taste.

I think there can be honestly bad music. Examples are these teen stars who think they can sing, and even get caught lip syncing, and still manage to sell records. Or people who have famous Dads/Brothers/Sisters who have their foor in the door even though they dont have a lick a talent, and their music is sincerely BAD. Theres no way around it, sh*te like lindsay lohan and ashlee simpson is horrible, horrible music that is made simply for commercial success, nothing else. Sure.. people listen to it, but then they hit puberty.

I respect talent in all genres, but i know genuinely BAD music when i hear it.

And if a book is written that makes no sence with the grammar of a small child?

You claim I don't know you, but I know you well
I read in those ash eyes we've been through hell
I've walked with the weakest just to feel strong
You've given your body just to belong

Let's burn together
Let's burn together

This pain will never end
These scars will never mend

I taste your sorrow and you taste my pain
Drawn to each other for every stain
Licking the layers of soot from your skin
Your tears work my crust to let yourself in

Touching you harder
Touching you harder now

As we walk through the ashes
I whisper your name
A taste of pain to cling to
As we walk through the ashes
You whisper my name
Who's the one with the sickest mind...
now?

This pain will never end
Our scars will never mend
Cleansing sweat
We are just using each other
Too depraved to stay alive
But too young to die
And we hurt
Thus we hurt

Scrubbing it harder
Too late to back out now
Scrubbing it even harder
As these two broken barren desolate disordered words collide

As we walk through the ashes
I whisper your name
A taste of pain to cling to
As we walk through the ashes
You whisper my name
Who's the one with the sickest mind...
now?

This pain will never end
These scars will never mend
Damn this dirty bed
Damn this dirty head
