Well, when people announce their temporary departures are they not opening themselves up to about anything?  I do try and stay away from mean comments though I may not always succeed. Big smile

I can be a pretty wide target myself, so folks can feel free to sling away without worrying I'll be overly sensitive or easily offended.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

No problem... Just imagine your whole family has healthcare, your children can go to college, you pay a little more in taxes, and the supermarket has 50% the amount of crap they have in the US, with less selection of 231271 different flavors of coke, and there you go... socialism... Tongue

Teo, you forgot to say that in those countries people don't work hard enoughEvil Smile... On another forum I read a woman say that Italians don't do any work, and I felt overtaken by a sudden homicidal urge (I have a very strong work ethic, believe it or not, and so did my parents - and my brother is also like me). I have also seen other similar choice comments on Europeans, and reporting them to the mods had no effect.

^ Oh we can also add more of those ridiculous misconceptions that the christian and right-wing side of America spread over democratic-socialist countries: terrible healthcare, long lines to buy things, people live off the state, a lot of lazy b*****ds, general education but poor education, a boring life....

Funny how none from those countries is trying to come live in US....

Funny how "less money in your pocket" (the stupid greedy Conservative Principle Againts Socialism) means doing something more than buying sh*t... doing things like using your brain...

Funny how those people who are so lazy actually have some of the biggest companies in the world, while the US hires external labor pretty much for everything... because US workers will not take certain jobs...

Funny how american high-schoolers SUCK in comparison to... well, even to south american students...

Damn.... Why is the US so full of &^#&^%&@*????

This country in better hands (or with better minds in some of its people) would be even greater....

You forget, Teo, that I did... It is true that Italy is not as well off as other European countries, but it is not a living hell by any means. Obviously, anyone who intimated that I lived off the state or was poorly educated would find themselves minus some limbAngryWinkLOL. I came here by my own choice, but I have to admit there is barely a day when I don't question the wisdom of my choice, especially seen the restrictions that immigration law has put upon me. As I said in some previous post, I can't help worrying about the future, especially as regards healthcare (I am very healthy, but don't suffer from a God complexWink).

^You came Raff (I guess) because of this guy we all know who still hasn't figured DT out... Tongue...

Without that, I'm not sure you would have come....

I come from Ecuador in South America.. please.... My case is hardly a surprise....

Even my poor country has some things that are more rational than here!... ConfusedShocked

And I love the US and I'm extremely grateful for what's given me and the good things (MANY) it has... but it could be better and it pisses me off when the Christian and right-wing hold on this country stops many things from happening... like changing the system from 100% capitalism to something more humane...

Like socialism... which is seen here as only second to cancer....

Sounds like you're satisfied that the Christians and right-wingers aren't in power anymore thanks to Obama and a Democratic Congress. Yep, those guys and gals have already begun changing stuff.

We all can paint amusing stereotypes of any nation, but that is all they are - exaggerated caricatures of the reality. The same is true of ideologies - our preconceptions of socialism, nationalism and most relegions... whatever... are based on distorted stereotypes developed not from experience, but from received wisdom of those whose own perceptions are also based upon inaccurate stereotypes.

What?

???? Italians more or less had built my country from 1880 to 1930 so lazy my arse. Argentina has less than a 40 millon population and it has a 3 million km surface , one of the biggest countries on earth.
I wouldn't mind some European migration again to get this country back to the top.

Thanks, MartinSmile! My late mom visited Argentina some 10 years ago, and she said it was the best trip she'd ever made. I saw her pics of Patagonia, and still have some of the gifts she brought from there. I remember her telling me that the percentage of people of Italian descent was very high (as I already knew anyway).

I've stayed away from this thread up until now - it's a bit too close to my day job (see my homepage).

All I would say is the only time real democratic socialism has been tried was in the immediate post war period in the UK, and it improved the lives of millions and set a template for many years until Thatcher destroyed it.

IMHO the whole world could do with a little bit of something similar in these crazy depressed days.

Oh - and also, Steve Hogarth for Prime Minister and  Steven Wilson for President ought to do itTongue

Life goes on and it's rarely pretty:

Twenty-Five Killed in Suicide Attack on Iraqi Funeral

 Link

 Excerpt:
At least 25 people have been killed by a suicide bomber in the Iraqi province of Diyala, police say.
Dozens of people are also reported to have been hurt in the attack.   It was the second bomb attack
in Iraq on Monday, with an earlier explosion near the capital. Baghdad, killing at least eight people.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Several things to touch on:

Italians immigrated to this country in droves in the late 1800's early 1900's.  They worked hard they carved a piece of their freedom became solid citizens and did their family's proud.  Their heritage is written all over New York (as well as the Irish) They learned the language of their new land and while they adopted their new culture they never forgot their old. In my state the native Latino population were growing grapes and making wines far earlier than they became popular. Their expertise helped the new vineyard owners develop world class wines that rivaled even the French masters.
America owes these two, among many nationalities, a great thank you.
I named these two because one is being demonized as much in this century as the other was in the previous.  Every people have good and bad people but as history will show these two will have way more good than bad.

As for the thread topic.  It isn't that the US practices Socialism in truth but it does borrow from some of its premise in social security, welfare and tax credits such as The earned income credit.  These are all vehicles of the redistribution of wealth one tenant of socialism.  (By saying that I am neither condoning or vilifying the practice just pointing out a fact). There is a segment of our government that thinks we need more of this and another less. Which is right? Is it one extreme or the other or somewhere in the middle?

As for the Obama administration sooner or later the American People will get tired of this direction and move back to the other party looking for "real change". It is inevitable. Wink

First of all, thank you for recognising the input my fellow Italians have given to this country. Unfortunately, they seem to have forgotten it all, and now practice racism towards immigrants with the same abandon other peoples did towards Italians (and others) in the past.

Which brings me to your last remark... This is not only true for Americans, but for everyone. One thing I have learned in life is that people are never happy with what they have, and will look for change even when it is not really necessary (here I am referring more to my native country than my adopted one).
