Pretty much sums up my whole feelings on this thread.![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif)
One of the major rules of economics is that there will always be losers. Sure we can do things to help the people at the bottom of the economic ladder, but there's always going to be someone clinging for dear life to that bottom rung. Economics is about scarce, limited resources so someone is always going to be left out unfortunately.
And besides, the shrinking of the middle class in my country and our ballooning debt has me far more worried than most other economic issues.
|
Quite so.
There's nothing wrong with being poor. There's also nothing wrong with being comfortable financially (Middle Class) but Capitalism is just annoying, yet also completely necessary.
So there will always be poor, middle class and upper crust rich w**kers. ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)
|
And there are plenty of good people at each level. As well as a few people who suck at each level.

Yep. That's life. ![Big smile Big smile](smileys/smiley4.gif) Why try and re-invent the wheel? Why can't people just accept fat cats, the poor and the middle-classes?

You know, some of you might remember that the strongest words of disapproval towards the rich were not spoken by Marx or any of his followers, but by a well-known hippie subversive called Jesus Christ ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif) ...

yes exactly ![Clap Clap](smileys/smiley32.gif) ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) ... but people don't like to be reminded of that... so people pervert or just flat out ignore that... it's like Tony says... any true Christian should be on the front line fighting for social equity... but the fact is.. most are as hypocritical and selective in their beliefs as their churches are.

I'm one of those Christians who believes it's better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have one.
If someone breaks into my home, I won't wait on police to arrive and protect my wife and 20-month-old son.
The Bible is in my hand everyday, and a gun almost never. I pray I never have to use a gun.

Kill unto others before others kill unto you. Turn the other cheek once you have shot the jerk who slapped you. The meek shall inherit nothing. The logic of your position is that God really isn't looking after you and you have to take matters into your own hands. Maybe the will of God is that you, your, wife, and your son should be killed by someone breaking into your house.

That's what scares me about living in the U.S. Gun Laws. It sounds to me as if you need to have a Gun whether you like the idea or not.

Not really, at least here.. Gun laws in the DC area are much stricter than in other states, and I for one have no intention of getting one, nor has Micky (though he says he used to be a crack shot ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif) ).

A much more enjoyable way to protect your house and family is to get a 200 lb. Akita....a roomate of mine did and we would prance it around the neighborhood during the day making sure to go in front of houses that might have some sticky fingered neighbors. People got robbed all around us. We were never touched. And no guns.
There were quite a few landmines to deal with however.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I think Robert means that he's willing to go to whatever lengths are necessary to protect his family. If that's what he means, then I totally agree with him. I personally don't like guns, have never used one, and hope to never have to. But if someone screws with my family's lives to that extent, then I could look past my dislike of guns if necessary. I also hope that last sentence was sarcasm. Because it's a really poor and insensitive example of it IMO.

But is it like-for-like?
I mean, if a guy/girl broke in, wasn't armed, would you shoot him/her for self-defence?
Or would it only be the case if he/she was armed with a gun?
I'm just curious.

I found that last sentence really, really offensive. I realize you're trying to make a point but you went over the line there, Brian. Sorry.

That's true. However overall I feel much more at ease. I think I'd be completely paranoid in the States. All the injured from that incident were brought to the old P.M.H. when my brother was in there. 'caused havoc. I think it was on my birthday too. Anyhow... Socialism!
