^^ It's good to have you Raff; (although i'm not completely foreign to the "All Prog from Italy" thread Big smile) btw, Micky has listened to Pelican before right?

I suggest some Math Rock for sure, but i don't quite believe that Don Cab is especially the best place to start because of their extremely free form and abrasive style. I'd start with some bands like "Toe" or "Lite". (of course, if you'd like some myspace links just give the word Smile )

Btw fellas, anyone else here familiar with the Russian post-rock band "Set White Flags on Fire Slowly"?  I've been enjoying them very much lately.

I am familiar with Battles - as a matter of fact, I was one of the people who pushed to have them included hereWink (together with David, of course). I don't mind free-form, abrasive music - remember that I am a fan of The Mars Volta, who are not exactly an easy listening band. I do tend to be very eclectic in my music tastes, and I find I am leaning more and more towards music that has some individuality. Clones of symphonic Seventies bands do nothing for me, I'm afraid.

Thanks to that link you sent me some time agoHeart, we have found some interesting independent music stores in our area, most of which sell secondhand CDs at good prices.

oh good.. our neighborhood record place recently closed after 35 years, very heartbreaking, you don't realize how nice it is to have a small independent dealer until it's gone

You know who are good? Tortoise and Slint. I wasn't giving them quite a fair chance before because I have gotten much less crazy about repetition.

I think you would enjoy Hella a lot. Zach Hill is not human.

I'm glad you liked Pelican, I never really got into them though. Maybe I need to try again.

And off-topic: could you please unblock me? I would like to respond to your PM, as it appears you did not take it in the manner I intended, which is understandable, but is something I would like to clear up...

There is actually heaps of gigs in Melbourne, but the problem is money and of course, finding people to go with.
Sure, I've got plenty of friends, but none of them are really into stuff like post metal, or technical death metal or anything like that, they are all pretty conservative with their music tastes.
The most 'out there' tastes a few of my friends have, is stuff like Dream Theater, heh.
I guess I could resort to getting drunk in the suburbs all weekend, but I grew out of that.
I guess I could go to gigs alone, but I always feel more comfortable going with other people.

money are not so big problem as company is, I have the same problem , almost none of my friends listen my music, they are not familiar with the term post rock, laugh about that, confused with the term, they listen our local crap pop / folk music, wich is worst on the planet, and we don't have a places where this kind ,or sililar music is played.sad, but true
And only post rock shows i have have heard in our country is Ana Never bend from serbia , if you know them, they are great, excellent post rock, i wasn't aware what kind of music they play, i went to the show and at my utmost surprise they started to play post rock,at it's best. I was shocked , thrilled as i won jackpot, left speechless, just enjoyed pure beauty ,  one of the best shows ever in macedonia.
And also I've heard Coma Stereo from slovenia, they play nice post rock tunes, and imagine that show was for free, few people ,but i was happy, others was confused!! and another thing , i don't mind going to a show alone not at all, i enjoy my music and i don't care if anyone would came with me, music is my companion, (of course this is only for my favourute music shows, post rock/metal, metal of any kind , rock  )i have been to concerts alone and enjoyed as much as when i'am with someone, if i like the band playing i go, I' am tired of searching for company, Yes , it's better you have someone to go stick to ,but macedonia is a big prison. And in april Mono are coming to Greece. But they won't give me a viza, what a pitty it is mono are coming clossest to my contry ever and i can't go , i will kill myself.

Tortoise is pretty good.
I especially liked  Millions Now Living Will Never die, though im not HUGE on them yet. still having trouble getting my hands on slint.

Seconded. never was a huge fan but ive seen them live and it changed my mind a little bit. fire in our throats is very good but i also like their sludgier sound they had on their first EP.

Yes, Tortoise and Pelican are great. I keep saying this, but it proves to be true for a lot of these bands: time is the key. Both bands took a little while to grow on me, especially Tortoise, mainly because they're pretty textural and abstract.

I think all of Pelican's releases have been great (not huge on the EP though, sound is ok, but the writing still needed some improvement). The Fire in Our Throats is one of my all-time favorites. I think I'm one of the only people around here (at least judging by the scores it's getting) that love City of Echoes. I think it's great.

I think all of Tortoise's albums are good too, but their debut is the only one not to click with me totally. A lot of people dig it, so I might need to try it again. TNT is my favorite, then Millions Now Living Will Never Die, then Standards, then It's All Around You, but like I said, they are all great (at least 4 stars if I were to review them).

I have been meaning to give Slint another shot, but they have done nothing for me in the past.

The songs from that one on Youtube is what made me change my mind towards them.

I only know the first three from Tortoise.

The s/t I only heard once and don't remember well.

Millions Now Living is just flat out awesome, as is TNT.  It's a toss-up as to which I prefer, though I'm inclined to say MNL.
