Topic: Queen Appreciation Thread Posted: January 25 2009 at 11:21 |
I think this great band deserves an appreciation thread. I don't recall ever seeing such a thread dedicated to Queen so I decided to start it on my own. So, here it goes. Queen is one of my favourite bands and Freddie one of my favourite vocalists. They were the first band I felt in love with. Being born in 1980 I grew up listening to their 80s and 90 hits. Me and my younger brother together with our mom were real Queen freaks then. I discovered their 70s albums much later and I love both eras. Now you can find their albums attached to the most popular newspaper in Poland. Every tuesday a new album. That revived my interest in Queen and I decided to build a collection. I've got 10 of them so far: 1. A Kind of Magic 2. A Night at the Opera 3. The Game 4. Sheer Heart Attack 5. News of the World 6. A Day at the Races 7. The Works 8. Queen II 9. Innuendo 10. Live Magic 14 more to go: 11. Queen I 12. Live Killers vol. I 13. Hot Space 14. Live Killers vol. II 15. Queen on Fire Live at the Bowl vol. I 16. Jazz 17. The Miracle 18. Queen on Fire Live at the Bowl vol. II 19. Live at Wembley '86 vol. I 20. Made in Heaven 21. Live at Wembley '86 vol. II 22. Return of the Champions vol. I 23. Flash Gordon 24. Return of the Champions vol. II And it's a beautiful edition. Every album is accompanied by a book containing a description of the album, lyrics and many pictures. God bless the Queen!

I agree Tuz, Queen is great band and it deserves it's own appreciation thread! Actually, it deserves probably a dozen of threads: for vocal harmonies, for Brian's guitar, for progression over years etc. BTW, I added singles in their discography..I think I'm going to decrease my reviews count by a number of prog related singles..

A great band that a lot of people probably hate, but they really did great music and albums, and Mercury's voice was unique.
I like Queen a lot

Ditto (even the being born in 1980 part).
I will love Queen till the day I die, no matter everything else I listen too, despite all the people who think Queen stinks.
There you go, I'm out of the closet now.

Even if I've never been a big Queen fan, there's no denying that they were (are?) a great band, and when they were good, they were excellent. I haven't heard their new incarnation with Paul Rodgers on vocals, though I'm quite curious about how he can replace a vocalist like Freddie, who had a completely different voice and style.

Well, Paul Rodgers is an excellent vocalist to start with, and he never set out to replace him. Brian May and Roger Taylor just thought they had particularly good chemistry with him (and they do), so they decided to work with him based on that. I think he sings the songs in his own way, the ones he can, and does a fair job at it. Tehy have also added Free and Bad Company songs to their set lists. Of course, even within the Queen fan community, a lot of people think he's absolute garbage, but that didn't stop them from selling out shows throughout Europe this fall.
Their new album is fine, although it certainly doesn't sound anything like Queen, and we certainly feel Paul bluesier influences on it. Again, a lot of people hate it. My only problem with it is that it doesn't feel to me like there is enough Brian May on it, despite a couple of yummy tidbit guitar solos, as if he had not participated to the song writting as much as the other two members.

First and foremost, I think they shouldn't use the name Queen when there's only a half of the line-up engaged in the project and it's missing the most important ingredient - Freddie's voice. Besides I remember that after Freddie's death the remaining members said that never ever...

Well, you've had The Doors reform without Jim Morrison, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band without Alex Harvey (that really takes the cake), and I don't remember who else doing the same thing ....

Yeah, he said that, 17 years ago.
I don't see why Roger and Brian couldn't use the name Queen, after all, they were 2 thirds of the founding members, and you can't deny that Brian's sound was as important an element of Queen as Freddie's voice was. Now they use Queen + Paul Rodgers, and it's not any worse than bands who went from "The Small Faces" to "The Faces", for example.
And seriously, how well do you think an arena would sell for "The Bri, Rog & Paul Band"? They were better off keeping the name, if only for financial reasons, and I'm sure even Freddie would agree.

The name" Queen" is proprietary to May, Taylor and maybe Deacon. They could nominate Adam Ant to fill for Freddie and call themselves Queen and noone can quibble squat,

Tuzvihar, you've simply got to get Live Killers (the original) and Live At Wembley, they are amazing. Queen live is an experience to savour.
I'm pleased to say I saw Queen live at Maine Road, Manchester, back in about '86 (a concert is the only reason you'd have got me in that old dump ) and it was an awesome performance.
The memory of the entire crowd singing along to Radio Ga Ga will remain with me forever.

Queen is one of those great bands that I always meant to listen to in depth but I never got around to it. I only own "Queen I" and "Queen II", and a greatest hits compilation but I would love to check out their other albums. "A Night at the Opera", "Sheer Heart Attack", and "Jazz" are the next three I'd like to hear.

Queen is one of my favourite band ever, even if I don't listen to them as much as I did. If I had to choose 5 albums it'll be: - Sheer Heart Attack - Live Killers - A Night At The Opera - News Of The World - Innuendo 4 or 5 years before, I've listened to them too much 'cause my cousins hated Queen. But now both admited that they're awesome! (... well... only one really said that, the other told me that he "only" liked "some" songs, but hey that's a good start!)

At least SAHB had an excuse - they were Teargas in their own right before they linked up with Alex

I love the first four albums to death and they were an awsome band live in the early days.
I remember at the time they alienated a lot of prog fans with the camp Zandra Rhodes-designed stage clothes and Mercury's posturing, but boy could they rock. You either loved them or hated them then - there was no inbetween.
I still reckon Queen II is an out-and-out prog album and I remember John Peel plugging them remorsely on the radio just as the first album came out - I got it in the week it was released.
I heard Great King Rat on the Peel show and was hooked. Interestingly they proudly boasted: no synthesisers on the first albums, which probably upset a few prog purists, too.
Their later stuff I can take or leave - I don't own anything after Opera.
There's one missing from the OP's original lists and a good one, too. Called Queen at the BBC, it features live versions of tracks from I & II and is very representative of their set at the time.
I saw them support Mott the Hoople at Hammersmith Odeon or The Rainbow and there was little point in Mott coming on - although they did, obviously. I think they might have ended with Jailhouse Rock of all things. Happy days
