I like Queen a lot

 

Ditto (even the being born in 1980 part).

 

I will love Queen till the day I die, no matter everything else I listen too, despite all the people who think Queen stinks.

Well, Paul Rodgers is an excellent vocalist to start with, and he never set out to replace him. Brian May and Roger Taylor just thought they had particularly good chemistry with him (and they do), so they decided to work with him based on that. I think he sings the songs in his own way, the ones he can, and does a fair job at it. Tehy have also added Free and Bad Company songs to their set lists. Of course, even within the Queen fan community, a lot of people think he's absolute garbage, but that didn't stop them from selling out shows throughout Europe this fall.

 

Their new album is fine, although it certainly doesn't sound anything like Queen, and we certainly feel Paul bluesier influences on it. Again, a lot of people hate it. My only problem with it is that it doesn't feel to me like there is enough Brian May on it, despite a couple of yummy tidbit guitar solos, as if he had not participated to the song writting as much as the other two members.

 

Yeah, he said that, 17 years ago.

 

I don't see why Roger and Brian couldn't use the name Queen, after all, they were 2 thirds of the founding members, and you can't deny that Brian's sound was as important an element of Queen as Freddie's voice was. Now they use Queen + Paul Rodgers, and it's not any worse than bands who went from "The Small Faces" to "The Faces", for example.

 

And seriously, how well do you think an arena would sell for "The Bri, Rog & Paul Band"? They were better off keeping the name, if only for financial reasons, and I'm sure even Freddie would agree.

 

I'm pleased to say I saw Queen live at Maine Road, Manchester, back in about '86 (a concert is the only reason you'd have got me in that old dump  ) and it was an awesome performance. 

 

The memory of the entire crowd singing along to Radio Ga Ga will remain with me forever.

I remember at the time they alienated a lot of prog fans with the camp Zandra Rhodes-designed stage clothes and Mercury's posturing, but boy could they rock. You either loved them or hated them then - there was no inbetween.

 

I still reckon Queen II is an out-and-out prog album and I remember John Peel plugging them remorsely on the radio just as the first album came out - I got it in the week it was released.

 

I heard Great King Rat on the Peel show and was hooked. Interestingly they proudly boasted: no synthesisers on the first albums, which probably upset a few prog purists, too.

 

Their later stuff I can take or leave - I don't own anything after Opera.

 

There's one missing from the OP's original lists and a good one, too. Called Queen at the BBC, it features live versions of tracks from I & II and is very representative of their set at the time.

 

I saw them support Mott the Hoople at Hammersmith Odeon or The Rainbow and there was little point in Mott coming on - although they did, obviously. I think they might have ended with Jailhouse Rock of all things. Happy days

It's an ok album, but I would have liked to have heard more from Brian and Roger in the vocal department as well.  I was disappointed that Rodgers sang all of the songs on the album save one, and even that one he sang part of it.  Brian and Roger had more vocal contributions on albums when Freddie was still around.

 

Queen was probably the first band that I fell in love with, around the age of 11.  A friend of mine from school had Queen's greatest hits and he brought it over one day and we played it on my little mono record player.  And I made a copy of it onto a little tape recorder that I had (not a direct transfer), so you could hear all kinds of background noise.  Still I played the tape until it wouldn't play no more, and then I went out and bought some of their albums.  My first was A Night at the Opera, followed fairly quickly by the Game and Queen II.  Been a favorite of mine now for close to 30 years.

 

Oh, I totally agree about you there. I think both Rog and Bri have great vocals, and some of my favourite Queen songs are sung by Brian (All Dead, All Dead, Sail Away Sweet Sister, '39,...). Still prefer Brian's Back To The Light version of Too Much Love Will Kill You to the Made And Heaven one. I was very dissapointed about that too. I mean even some song from Queen, you knew very easily that Brian had written, even if it wasn't him singing, but I felt that we didn't even have that on The Cosmos Rock.

 

And Queen absolutely became my favourite at around that age too, maybe a bit before, because I remember being very freakin' sad when Freddie died. First CD I ever got was the green Greatest Hits, thanks to my then Duran Duran loving big sister. First album I went out and got for myself was Made In Heaven too (yeah, I started a little late).

 

The ongoing argument I've been having with my boyfriend at home for the past years is "which is the greatest band: Queen or The Beatles?"

 

favourite album must be "A Night at the Opera", have it on 5.1 DVD-Audio sounds great, and the "Making of .." video.  Must rate "Queen II" as their proggiest, and "Sheer Heart Attack" and "The Game" as their heaviest.

First heard them played on the radio (Bohemian R., of course) just when it was released, and I was flummoxed, because nobody had ever heard such a thing before. I really wasn't sure what to make of it, but I was intreagued enough to get the album, and I was hooked from then on.

 

Followed their work ever since, and although Hot Space was one big erm.. well..., it wasn't very good.

 

As someone mentioned above, I agree that Queen II is an album that never got the recognition it deserved.

After all these years it has become my favourite Queen recording, a blueprint of many, many bands to come many years in the future. Terribly underrated.

 

I don't understand why Queen -1 didn't consider hiring Valensia Clarkson, most commnly know as Valensia, to hold the microphone. Seriously, this guy is the perfect clone of Freddie Mercury. Just listen to his tribute to Queen and you'll understand what I mean. Another good candidate would be Russell Mael, from Sparks...
