Imagine you just met a girl and she asked you the famous question "What music do you like?" You don't know what music she likes or knows of. You don't wanna bore / embarrass her with obscure bands that no one heard of, but you also don't wanna make yourself seem like a conformist with no individual tastes by popping out big names like "Pink Floyd" and "Yes". So what would your answer be? Here's one of mine:
The great thing about it is that, whether this girl knows about metal or not, she will enjoy my answer regardless. And Orphaned Land is just a cool name to say. This answer is also quite informative. Now she knows much about me: I'm a metalhead, proghead, funny guy (or at least try to be one) and world music lover. |

Hahahaha! Do I dare use the p word? Now, I admittedly am a dude who actually knows what you're talking about, unlike your intended victim, but I would have great difficulty avoiding laughing in your face, and I'm not sure it's for the reasons you intend. And it doesn't say you like world music, just that you really like Orphaned Land, perhaps to an unhealthy degree. Progressive death metal (or whatever over-specific genre they are) with middle eastern touches is not the same thing as actual world music--or even prog rock. So I wouldn't say it's informative, either. I say I like jazz and most people drop it at that, which I'm happy with, even if their conception of jazz is almost certainly not mine.

I like everything except the stuff that sucks.
That's not funny but sums up my tastes well. |

I just say "stuff that you've never heard of". Almost no one follows up on this, because they actually don't care.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Do beavers make good pets in the USA, or do you have to keep them away from your trees? I ask this as beavers are being reintroduced into the wilds of Great Britain and of course to take the thread off at a tangent.
