Subject: What music do you like? Answer in one funny line.

Imagine you just met a girl and she asked you the famous question "What music do you like?" You don't know what music she likes or knows of. You don't wanna bore / embarrass her with obscure bands that no one heard of, but you also don't wanna make yourself seem like a conformist with no individual tastes by popping out big names like "Pink Floyd" and "Yes". So what would your answer be? Here's one of mine:
Girl: So, what music do you listen to? Me: Metal. Progressive metal. Death metal. Progressive Death metal. Middle-eastern Progressive Death metal. (and look into her eyes and say slowly) Orphaned Land. |
The great thing about it is that, whether this girl knows about metal or not, she will enjoy my answer regardless. And Orphaned Land is just a cool name to say. This answer is also quite informative. Now she knows much about me: I'm a metalhead, proghead, funny guy (or at least try to be one) and world music lover.

Hahahaha! Do I dare use the p word?
Now, I admittedly am a dude who actually knows what you're talking about, unlike your intended victim, but I would have great difficulty avoiding laughing in your face, and I'm not sure it's for the reasons you intend.
And it doesn't say you like world music, just that you really like Orphaned Land, perhaps to an unhealthy degree. Progressive death metal (or whatever over-specific genre they are) with middle eastern touches is not the same thing as actual world music--or even prog rock. So I wouldn't say it's informative, either.
I say I like jazz and most people drop it at that, which I'm happy with, even if their conception of jazz is almost certainly not mine.

You'd be surprised...
A girl asked me that same question and I said:
Oh, lots of stuff that you've probably never heard of...
Try me...
Uh oh!
I also mentioned I liked some Japanese stuff, so I had to reel off a list of bands... she nodded and said she'd heard of some of them.
I did once get a girl listening to some Porcupine Tree that'd I bought the same day I'd bumped into her (she was a friend of mine before anyhow) and well... she actually got to hear some of Deadwing before I did.
Oh and she liked it.
I may give her my copy... because Deadwing is just... erm, not my thing.
Anyhow, to answer the question:
Girl: so what sort of music do you like? Me: oh, a mix of stuff, mostly avant-garde and jazzy and a little bit of metal; but mostly stuff you've never heard of Girl: oh right *puzzled look on her face*; any bands I may have heard of? Me: Opeth Girl: Oh I like them!
That usually works.
Addendum:
Or, like Pat and some others:
Girl: so what music do you like? Me: Theusz Hamtaahk mmmmmm Theusz Hamtaahk mmmmmmmmmmmmm Theusz Hamtaahk! Girl: you're weird... Me: Da Zeuhl Wortz Mekanik! Girl: oh dear...
Final edit: the premise of this thread is sexist... a girl who loves prog may be asked what music they like from a guy too. Or perhaps you're gay, of course.

I'm just not funny, so I didn't bother writing an actual response for this thread... and so far, I've only counted 3 regular female members, so I don't think "sexist" applies here.

I usually start with band names that most everyone has heard of. Then I move on to slightly obscure metal and avant-garde bands to confuse people.
Oh, and mentioning Magma is a great way to usually change the topic.

Nobody I know has heard of Magma though... not one.
Most people know one Pink Floyd song.
Not that I am that into PF, mind you.
I have very few bands that I would say people have heard of... except maybe Opeth and Muse.

I used to drink in a gay-orientated pub and they listened mostly to cheesy pop.
I know a few gay men who like metal too, mind you.

My tastes seem to be that of an average white male with bipolar depression and a midlife crisis - which is partially true anyhow. I actually once said something to this effect, but the girl wasn't sure whether I was kidding or not. Then again, neither was I.

Girl: "What kind of music do you listen to?"
Me:"I like that music from that guy, sh*t what's his name? You know... he was on Letterman a while ago.. ah wait Rob something... Robert... you know... help me here!?"
Girl: "sorry, i don't watch Letterman, he annoys me. Are you talking about Robert Fripp by any chance? Because I don't think he has ever been on Letterman..."
Me: "Who the hell is Robert Fripp?"
Girl: "Oh, excuse me, i was under the impression that you were searching for something witty to say to my question, and assumed you listened to strange music (progressive rock), therefor assuming you meant Robert Fripp when you said 'Rob', no? He is a master of progressive rock guitar playing..."
Me: "Doesn't ring a bell... wait, was I thinking of Rober Plant? no... not him... hmmm, still can't remember"
Girl: "I don't care much for the music of Led Zeppelin anyways, but you should listen to some Fripp..."
