I hate them cos they were so damn good ...  ... and maybe because the classic line-up split up ...

I'll always think of Genesis as the defining symphonic rock band, although I disagree with somebody's (was it Flowerchild?) view that Vibrationbaby shouldn't be a collaborator cos  he hates Genesis ... It'll be a pretty dull prog fan who uniformly loves Genesis, Yes, Rush, KC, ELP, VDGG, Gentle Giant, Canterbury, Italian symphonic, Krautrock, prog-metal, neo-prog and RIO

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I have to say, I love Genesis.

I find Gentle Giant quite awful!

Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

...i agree anyone who loves krautrock, prog metal, neo-prog and *especially* RIO should NOT be a collaborator.

I love 'em. Especially Selling England and the Lamb. Foxtrot isn't my favorite, particularly because of Supper's Ready. Just could never get into it! Also I've always loved Watcher of the Skies.

Let me see if I get you:

Foxtrot has no high point and it's an album of just one tone? Supper's Ready neither?

  1. Watcher of the Skies: Dark, baroque, agressive
  2. Time Table: Soft, lyrical, narrative and a bit melancholic.
  3. Get 'Em Out by Friday: Full of changes, from dramatic, to sarcasttic, passing by many different atmospheres.
  4. Can-Utility and the Coastliners: Has more changes than most bands in a whole album, with brilliant instrumental solos and intelligent lyrics.
  5. Horizons: An acoustic track, nothing remotely similar in the whole album
  6. Supper''s Ready: Well, this is a joke, SEVEN  different songs with SEVEN different moods and tones that go from a melodic and soft Lover's Leap to the most dramatic ending with As Sure as Eggs is Eggs, passing by the frenetic Apocalypse in 9/8 and the sarcastic relief in Willosw Farm.

Please listen the album carefully before saying this kind of things, if you don't have valid arguments, just say you don't like Genesis, it's better because at the end it's your taste and nobody can say anything about your taste, but don't give absurd arguments.

I FULLY agree that Genesis utterly sucks.  I've given them chances on many occasions and their music just continues to suck no matter what state or mood I'm in.  I love almost all progressive rock and can stand even most prog bands that I don't particularly like, but I CANNOT STAND GENESIS.  Whether people listen to them because they're upheld as prog-gods by the prog community and are told that they're the epitome of prog, or whether many prog-heads like them for their music is highly debatable.  But i'll say it again and I will not falter or hesitate, GENESIS IS THE WORST PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND EVER!

I suspect some people dislike (Genesis) (insert name of popular prog
band here) for reasons of their own image. They can't be seen liking
something so popular and obvious. Unless it is atonal, grates the ear
and/or incomprehensible, they will not admit to enjoying it. Their
enjoyment of a band/artist seems inversely proportional to how widely
regarded it is. And stating so in a public forum seems to me to be an
assertion of their 'superior' taste, when there is no such thing. Difference,
yes, but not superiority. Sadly, what we think we OUGHT to like
dominates some of us so much we miss out on the joys such music might
bring us.

Humans are funny. Constantly finding ways to make their lives narrower
and less joyful. Good luck to them.

Hey funny you should say that . When Genesis were obscure in the mid 70s liking them was liking something not popular or obviouss . It was a real esoteric taste. But amonngst those of esoteric taste it has become cliched

Funny world

But anyway with five number one albums when they were past their peak they must had something going. Which is Not denying someone the right to hate them. But if you hate them and keep listening to them over and over again and buying the next release you might need to consult a physician to see whether your medication needs to be increased.

I love Genesis.

The best symphonic rock band, till Hackett (not Gabriel) leave the band.

"Opinions are like arseholes - Everybody has them".

Most prog-fans (Symphonic prog esp) should surely find a gem or two on the Genesis albums from 1970-1975 - If not then I suggest YOU ARE NOT A SYMPHONIC PROG ROCKER and perhaps a metal-head or noise-freak ???

Won't waste more time at this thread because I love a good discussion when somebody offers ideas or arguments I don't agree with but in this case I read:

  • Foxtrot, Trespass and SEBTP suck (Nobody has explained why)
  • Supper's Ready has only one tone (This is absurd)
  • Genesis is the worst band ever (Sorry but this is stupid)

With this lack of arguments it's impossible to discuss, if you dare to say any band is the worst ever you need a hell of strong arguments to justify such a strong opinion, if youdon't have those arguments better don't give this kind of opinions.

So, if you don't like them, say it, there's no trouble with that, and say it loud if you want, it's your taste and you need no arguments for taste, I don't like most of King Crimson for example; but it would be absolutely moronic to say they suck or are the worst band ever just because I don't like them.

So keep on with that if you want, if somebody has an intelligent argument, I will be there to debate.

Sob...
It hurts me reading so much hatred towards Genesis.

I simply LOVE Genesis...they come just one step below the Beatles, which I consider the root of all modern music (the one I'm really into, at least)

And when I say I love Genesis I mean from From Genesis To Revelation to Calling all Stations

Peter Gabriel's vocals literally make me shiver, and I think Phil Collins is an excellent singer for his own. I also think Ray Wilson has a beautiful voice, at times even warmer than Peter's (check the acoustic live version of Lover's Leap on the flip side of the Shipwrecked single).

I don't think that Genesis ended when Peter left: in fact A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering are my favourite albums...surely they have steered heavily towards pop music during the 80s, yet I find tracks like Mama or Domino simply great!

My ratings:

  1. A Trick of the Tail (best picks: Entangled, Mad Man Moon, Robbery Assault and Battery)
  2. Wind and Wuthering (bp: One for the Vine, Blood on the Rooftops, All in a Mouse's Night)
  3. Nursery Cryme (bp: The Return of the Giant Hogweed, The Musical Box, Seven Stones)
  4. Selling England by the Pound (bp: Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, Firth of Fifth, The Cinema Show)
  5. Foxtrot (bp: Watcher of the Skies, Supper's Ready)
  6. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (bp: title track-Fly on the Windshield-Broadway Melody of 1974, In The Cage, The Lamia, The Carpet Crawlers)
  7. Duke (bp: Behind the Lines-Duchess-Guide Vocal, Duke's Travels)
  8. Trespass (bp: The Knife, White Mountain)
  9. We can't dance (bp: No son of Mine, Fading Lights, Living Forever, Dreaming while you Sleep)
  10. Genesis (bp: Mama, Home by the Sea-Second Home by the Sea, Silver Rainbow)
  11. Invisible Touch (bp: Tonight Tonight Tonight, Domino)
  12. And then there were three (bp: Undertow, Down and out, Deep in the Motherlode)
  13. Calling all Stations (bp: title track, Uncertain weather, One man's fool)
  14. Abacab (bp: Dodo-Lurker, Me and Sarah Jane)
  15. From Genesis to Revelation (bp: The Conqueror, The Serpent, In the Beginning)

It grieves me to think there won't be a new Genesis release...

Everyones entitled to their opinions.

Even if their opinions reveal them to have no taste at all..!!

I love Genesis. Their music is superb and unique. They are the best song writers in prog IMO. Tony Banks is one the greatest song writers and rock keyboard players of all time. His chord progressions are unusual and highly effective, he can play melodies that make grown men weep instantly. Phil Collins is one of the greatest fusion drummers I have heard. His style and sound worked perfectly with Genesis. Hacket is a brilliant melodic guitarist, with a unique style and sound, Peter Gabriel was a great showman, an unmistakable singer and a complete freak, making Bowie look like Cliff Richard.

Their music is very kind to the ears.

I dont have any bands that I hate, but of all the prog I'm aware of King Crimson is probably among my least favourite, as so much of their stuff sounds like noisey experimentation for the sake of it to me. Not enough focus on actually writing good songs. IMO...

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I agree completely! There are very few dissonant sonorities in their work (The Waiting Room excluded maybe...), which makes their music enough easy-listenable...which in turn helps people who are not "aficionados" of the genre to approach their efforts with less distrust than they might have for other prog acts!

I'm very fond of the "extended-song" formula...and I think that a crafty songwriting can be more enjoyable than adventurous experimentation.

Always IMHO, obviously!

(P.S.: besides this, I however think that King Crimson are able to develop very pleasing songs...take Starless - my favourite - The Night Watch, Ladies of the Road, Lady of the Dancing Water, One time, Eyes wide open or the whole first album)

I find it odd that some people don't like Genesis.

Given that I hated them when I first heard them...Mainly because I had realised the kind of music I wanted to write had already been done before. (I was blown away)

That was Trespass. Favorite band will always be The Beatles though!
