Other German bands that are worthy of being explored:

Aera
Tiere der Nacht (a side project of Guru Guru drummer Mani Neumeier; the band name means "Animals of the Night. They are not in the archives yet).
Space Explosion (a short-lived German supergroup which also featured Neuimeier, but also Amon Düül 2 multi-instrumentalist and singer Chris Karrer). Their only self-titled album was re-released under the band  name "Amon Guru", including some bonus tracks; it was retitled "Die Krautrock Explosion" in the re-release. It is very much in the vein of early Kraufrock. You can hear the whole Amon Guru album online here:
http://tinyurl.com/87dr6j
The line-up (besides Karrer and Neumeier) is Jürgen Engler of German band Die Krupps (guitar), Dieter Moebius of Harmonia (keyboards), Werner "Zappi" Diermaier of Faust (percussion) and Jean-Hervé Peron (also of Faust) guitarand trumpet. An all-star line-up indeed!
And yet another side project of Mani Neumeier (that man is full of energy, and he is going on 70!):
Psychedelic Monsterjam, featuring Ax Genrich from early Guru Guru days on guitar and Dave Schmidt aka Sulana Bassana on bass. They released two live albums so far, a self-titled one and "Intergalactic Travel Agency". Krautrock of the finest!

Yeti. That was Amon Duul II. Check out the little highlight baldfriede provided four posts ago and I think that you`ll find that Krautrock Explosion is a bit more mind blowing than Yeti. Not that Yeti isn`t mind blowing it`s just that Krautrock explosion is a bit more mind blowing.

Anybody out there ever heard of a rather obscure German folk/rock band called Broeselmachine? They put out two albums in the seventies. The  the first one from `71 which has a freaky cover and can be described as hippie/ prog / folk. Sort of like Hoelderlin`s first album only with English vocals. The second one released in `76 had Mani Nuemeier on percussion as well as Roland Schaffer from Guru Guru on bass which I have never been able to locate. I was suprised to find them here in the archives with a track available for streaming. Check it out. Apparently this first album is available on CD as well. I added a video of a reunion in `06 but it seem s to have different players.

Prof. Wolfff is an excellent krautrock band.

There’s a great video of them playing live on YouTube; here is the link:

"Bröselmaschine", by the way, means "hashish machine"; "Brösel" is a German slang word for hashish, because the hashish has to crumbled before using it, and "to crumble" means "bröseln" in German; a "crumb" is a "Brösel". The word was originally used for breadcrumbs only (you can still see the root of "Brot", the German word for "bread", in "Brösel").

My favourite german bands

CAN: my first contact with german music, and many sublime moments on their music
AMON DUUL II first records (Yeti, Phallus Dei and Tanz der Lemminge)
POPOL VUH: I have recently discovered them, and I think it´s a very interesting music
FAUST: one of my favourites, but I prefer the records with Hans Jochim Irmler
PASSPORT: great jazz rock
EMBRYO: one of the best bands ever, many of their records are essential
ASH RA TEMPEL: I love their first three records, but the rest are also at a high level
PETER BRÖTZMANN: not a rock musician, but his music is of great interest (I love LAST EXIT, his project with Bill Lasswell, Shonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson, right on the limits between free jazz and prog rock)
TANGERINE DREAM: I like them until Force Majeure, the rest is a bit boring, with some exceptions
EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN: one of the most singular bands on earth, although not all their records are great, but is a band woth to be discovered
DZYAN: considered by many as a second rate band, I think they sound very fresh and original

I am still discoveriing GILA, Klaus Schulze, YATHA SIDRA and GURU GURU, but I like the few I have listened to.

Why is it so many people are into only the first few Amon Duul II albums. Hijack and Made In Germany is where they really proved their ability as musicians, arrangers and composers. Made In Germany is a bloody masterpiece both musically and conceptually.

Probably my favourite band from Germany is Eloy but they have been mentioned previously, another ones that come to my mind now that i like a lot are Wallenstein, Out of Focus, Emma Myldenberger and Tortilla Flat among others, there arre great music here besides what we know as Kraut, with symphonic bands like SFF or Epidaurus

I need to hear more Kraut... Eloy, Grobschnitt, Wallenstein, Mythos, these bands I know almost everything about, but Kraut I heard only few albums of each band... mostly because I still cannot like saxophone...

Actually, many European bands got away with using sax without the music slipping into fusion.  Hawkwind is a perfect example.  Amon Duul also used sax nicely.

How about Guru Guru. Check out the L.Torro video I added a while back. Excellent observation. Hawkwind used the saxes more for freaky chirping effects rather than straight playing.
