This is a thread where to introduce everything about the German progressive bands... just like the Italian, RIO and other topics... and in order to not allow anyone think I'm only a Grobschnitt fan I'm starting with the album I'm playing right now...
Strange Guys (Mythos)
I'll write a review of this album because I could believe it's a... 2.25
Strange Guys is at least four stars.... Also this thread is motivated because so many people never listen to some great bands from Germany...

I can hardly say I'm not a German progrock afficionado, especially since I got heavy favorites in the Berlin electronic school, and I like exploring the Krautrock music.

For me Italy and German have the best progressive... England is the most important country...
There is a Grobschnitt's song which anyone must know... Suntrip... Why? In the 1969, Joachim Ehrig, Stefan Danielak and Gerd-Otto Kühn had a band called The Crew... They played in some places and events songs of their idols like Hendrix, but they also have a song composed at that this... The Suntrip... There is a Suntrip live version recorded at Hagen (69) and included into 'The History Of Solar Music Vol. 3' we can see the fantastic mix between psychedelic, krautrock and space rock...
Krautrock, Zeuhl, R.I.O. are GREAT progressive styles... Amon Duul II is EXCELLENT... Phallus Dei could be consider one of the fathers of the progressive rock... The German bands are less inspired by the english rock than any other country... they have a unique style...

Because they are deeper in the underground of music than before. At the moment, besides pop-rock and hip-hop, the electronic music scene seems to be the most productive one. If you are a fan of more ambient and electronic music, you might enjoy some of it. Still, as I am not that familiar with those bands, I am not the right one to recommend some acts
While I still can not enjoy Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze, my appreciation for Can as well as Kraftwerk is growing. Now, expanding my Eloy-collection, I realise that a lot of great music comes from my homecountry. Crazy but somehow beautiful..
While on the more symphonic or folky side, there also are bands like Hoelderlin or Novalis, who also are worth a listen.
To continue local patriotism ( ), I strongly recommend Peter Bursch and his Bröselmaschine. They released some great albums, but are rather unknown. While probably not being as jam-focused as others, their style is fascinating to me.
What distracts me from some German groups are the lyrics. It is something else for me to hear them in my native language. While I understand English or Spanish, I don't take care of the lyrics that much. Especially Electric Orange make it difficult for me to like them..

Personally, I forgot about Dark Suns, Haggard (though not THAT new, as well as Poverty's No Crime) and Sylvan (check out Posthumous Silence!). Also, for something more unknown, Sunpath is worth a listen. All those bands (besides Sylvan) are more or less located in the metal realm. I hope you find something for you

Guru Guru, Can, Amon Düül 2 and Embryo are among my very favourite bands. Up to a certain point also Tangerine Dream, but sadly they changed their music completely and became less interesting. Of the lesser known bands I especially like Dzyan, Annexus Quam, Frumpy (although they are rather untypical for a German band), and Between. To name just a few though. Krautrock rules!

Amon Duul on tour again. Renate is 60 and she still has it . I hate all the Grace Slick comparisons. Renate`s weird witchy vocals are sensual in a very well, unique witchy way. Chris Karrer is simply an amazing multi-instrumentalist/composer. I`ll be in the UK in the Spring but I can`t find any dates yet anywhere. Anyone?

There is a lot of German bands I hadn´t listened to yet.
The ones I know of are Embryo and Birth Control (I like them
but have to come over again with more open ears) and
Vanden Plas (I love some of their albums and they have
Wish you were here in Christ.0 which is one of my favourite
songs from any band).
I´ll go slowly cause there´s a lot to know and, I´m hoping, to enjoy.

Other German bands that are worthy of being explored:
Aera Tiere der Nacht (a side project of Guru Guru drummer Mani Neumeier; the band name means "Animals of the Night. They are not in the archives yet). Space Explosion (a short-lived German supergroup which also featured Neuimeier, but also Amon Düül 2 multi-instrumentalist and singer Chris Karrer). Their only self-titled album was re-released under the band name "Amon Guru", including some bonus tracks; it was retitled "Die Krautrock Explosion" in the re-release. It is very much in the vein of early Kraufrock. You can hear the whole Amon Guru album online here: http://tinyurl.com/87dr6j - http://tinyurl.com/87dr6j The line-up (besides Karrer and Neumeier) is Jürgen Engler of German band Die Krupps (guitar), Dieter Moebius of Harmonia (keyboards), Werner "Zappi" Diermaier of Faust (percussion) and Jean-Hervé Peron (also of Faust) guitarand trumpet. An all-star line-up indeed! And yet another side project of Mani Neumeier (that man is full of energy, and he is going on 70!): Psychedelic Monsterjam, featuring Ax Genrich from early Guru Guru days on guitar and Dave Schmidt aka Sulana Bassana on bass. They released two live albums so far, a self-titled one and "Intergalactic Travel Agency". Krautrock of the finest!

Yeti. That was Amon Duul II. Check out the little highlight baldfriede provided four posts ago and I think that you`ll find that Krautrock Explosion is a bit more mind blowing than Yeti. Not that Yeti isn`t mind blowing it`s just that Krautrock explosion is a bit more mind blowing.

Anybody out there ever heard of a rather obscure German folk/rock band called Broeselmachine? They put out two albums in the seventies. The the first one from `71 which has a freaky cover and can be described as hippie/ prog / folk. Sort of like Hoelderlin`s first album only with English vocals. The second one released in `76 had Mani Nuemeier on percussion as well as Roland Schaffer from Guru Guru on bass which I have never been able to locate. I was suprised to find them here in the archives with a track available for streaming. Check it out. Apparently this first album is available on CD as well. I added a video of a reunion in `06 but it seem s to have different players.

"Bröselmaschine", by the way, means "hashish machine"; "Brösel" is a German slang word for hashish, because the hashish has to crumbled before using it, and "to crumble" means "bröseln" in German; a "crumb" is a "Brösel". The word was originally used for breadcrumbs only (you can still see the root of "Brot", the German word for "bread", in "Brösel").

My favourite german bands
CAN: my first contact with german music, and many sublime moments on their music
AMON DUUL II first records (Yeti, Phallus Dei and Tanz der Lemminge)
POPOL VUH: I have recently discovered them, and I think it´s a very interesting music
FAUST: one of my favourites, but I prefer the records with Hans Jochim Irmler
PASSPORT: great jazz rock
EMBRYO: one of the best bands ever, many of their records are essential
ASH RA TEMPEL: I love their first three records, but the rest are also at a high level
PETER BRÖTZMANN: not a rock musician, but his music is of great interest (I love LAST EXIT, his project with Bill Lasswell, Shonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson, right on the limits between free jazz and prog rock)
TANGERINE DREAM: I like them until Force Majeure, the rest is a bit boring, with some exceptions
EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN: one of the most singular bands on earth, although not all their records are great, but is a band woth to be discovered
DZYAN: considered by many as a second rate band, I think they sound very fresh and original
I am still discoveriing GILA, Klaus Schulze, YATHA SIDRA and GURU GURU, but I like the few I have listened to.

Probably my favourite band from Germany is Eloy but they have been mentioned previously, another ones that come to my mind now that i like a lot are Wallenstein, Out of Focus, Emma Myldenberger and Tortilla Flat among others, there arre great music here besides what we know as Kraut, with symphonic bands like SFF or Epidaurus

Actually, many European bands got away with using sax without the music slipping into fusion. Hawkwind is a perfect example. Amon Duul also used sax nicely.

How about Guru Guru. Check out the L.Torro video I added a while back. Excellent observation. Hawkwind used the saxes more for freaky chirping effects rather than straight playing.

Hi,
I can still put on YETI ... and there are not many guitarists out there that can make it sound like spaceships from outer space landing! Or some ultra sonic visual of some sort, reminiscent of the cover of that album ...
I don't care for the term Krautrock ... but I put together a fun sequence for you all ...
Must be hear loud ... and loud ... this is a music set ...
Scorpions - Fly to the Rainbow
Amon Duul 2 - Apocalyptic Bore
Guru Guru - Der Elektrolurch
Can - Mother Sky
Grobschnitt - Solar Music Live (in its entirety)
Faust - Tapes
Agitation Free - Malesch (anything)
Cozmic Couriers - Planeten Sit-In
Roedelius - Grosses Wasser
...
and then after a drink (to clear up the fog) ...
Holger Czukay - On the Way to the Peak of the Normal
Eroc - Norderland
18 karat Gold - (any cut will do)
Zelig - Knock on Heaven's Door
Eberhard Schoenner - Trance Formation (for you gospel freaks!)
Guru Guru - LSD March
Kraan - Any early long cut live
Utopia - Nazi Goring
Klaus Schulze - Sebastian en traum
...
and then after a shower (to clear up the vibes)
Popol Vuh - In den Garten Pharaos
Klaus Schulze - Mirage
Tangerine Dream - Stratosfear
Ash Ra Tempel - Nightdust
...
and then ... for a good night cap ...
Amon Duul 2 - Wie der Wind Am Ende Einer Strasse
Amon Duul 2 - Yeti
Pleasant dreams ... and yes .. I have all this and much more ... can not EVER get enough of it.
(and that's the only Scorpions album I ever kept ... the rest was crap!)

Why is it so many people are into only the first few Amon Duul II albums. Hijack and Made In Germany is where they really proved their ability as musicians, arrangers and composers. Made In Germany is a bloody masterpiece both musically and conceptually. |
I always thought that ... a song does not a "composer" make. I still like the band, and while I can appreciate NADA MOONSHINE ... you know what my biggest criticism is? .... for a band that was so fantastic in experimentation ... the only thing they could do now was ... a nice song or two? They couldn't even "trip" anymore?
HIJACK ... is, a massively great album ... it's just a shame that Atlantic at that time decided to give all the money to a big dick on a stage and another over sized ego, and killed over 100 artists on their label conglomerate ... most of these artists were European bands that today we talk about with so much affection. And because the album had no backing, or support ... it got trashed by anyone that heard it on any rock media.
I just don't know that many American radio stations can appreciate the "challenge" that Amon Duul was presenting in "Explode Like a Star" ... or the bigger finger to many other things ... "Ge Guadaloop" ... which a lot of people think is a taboo of sorts and putting down "rock'n'roll" ... no kidding ... this happened in Santa Barbara! And at the time, things were not about being "politically correct" as they became 20 years later ... although the feds enjoyed doing target practice on the radio station towers!
Personally, I liked MADE in GERMANY ... but I think that a more focused album, with a few more "jams" instead of songs, would also be enjoyed ... that's like saying that today ... if you saw AD2 ... you would not want to hear YETI played ... you're full of it ... you would love it and cry afterwards!
I always thought ... at one time ... the music did all the talking ... you did not need the lyrics in Soap Shop Rock to enjoy the album ... and all of a sudden, it is lyrics, and sometimes trivial and not important ... and while I appreciated a number of fantastic songs ... I felt sad ... I missed the vast expanse and explosion of sound that WOLF CITY had ... or the unbelievable power and strength of Mozambique after Apocalyptic Bore ... still the 2 most important AD2 songs of all ... one a massive finger to people that got stuck in drugs and couldn't even talk to you anymore ... and the other ... guess what ... even Mozambique got its independence 2 months later. (This was the reason I put Scorpions song Fly to the Rainbow on the list on the other thread _ so you can see a nice song that basically tells everyone ... get ripped and stoned!)
But, out of curiosity ... why does a song fit into "composition" and an experimentation does not?
So much for the symphonys we listen to all the time in classical music ... to me YETI is one of those symphonies ... stop taking that credit away from the artist ... hehe
Thx

I wasn`t taking any credit away from anyone.Quite honestly I don`t know what you mean by that. And I never said experimenting couldn`t be composing because that`s how a lot of songs became songs. I just said they really started to prove themselves on the Carnival In Babylon album onwards despite some dissatisfied fans and critics.
I think the first album they really started taking flak for goiong commercial was Carnival In Babylon which in my opinion is one of their best. Don`t know what you`re talking about ATCO ( you`re refering to ATCO? ) killing 100 artists. When Amon Duul II was on Liberty they were virtually unknown in North America. With the switch in management and musical approach the North American market sat up and took notice. I like the incessant jamming of the early Kosmische bands as much as the next guy but I don`t think even Guru Guru could have got away with that sort of thing for long. I mean, c`mon guys give us some songs as well. And that`s what a lot of these bands did. The ones that wanted to stay in freakoutland went by the wayside.

Fool's Garden : Though not strictly progressive...if you like the Beatles you will love them. Great melodies, harmonies, songwriting and arranging skills. Huge in Germany & some other parts of Europe. Their hit 'Lemon Tree' is probably one of their weakest tunes but commercial. Check out their other stuff.
