In my area it rarely snows, we have this fun thing called an ice storm that hits us occasionally, knocks out the electricity for a just day or two if you're lucky.

No snow here - we had a light dusting in early December, but no more since then (though I saw some flakes falling last Friday, when walking to the grocery store). On the other hand, I've heard it has been snowing heavily in many parts of Italy, though I'm quite sure not in Rome (last time was in 1986). I do agree with the crazy temp swings here in the east US... The Xmas week started with icy cold blasts on Monday, and ended with almost spring-like warmth on Sunday!

We've got plenty of ice in Montreal. Snow? Oh yeah, we have some of that too.
Snowing heavily as I type...
I think the UK is actually getting its first proper winter for about 10 years this year; pretty to look at, but a bit poo to drive in (the roads are fine, but the other road users drive liker complete twonks ![]() [edit] Just nipped out for a cigarette - lovely... ![]() ![]() BTW Peter - 'snow day' declared recently?
No, none recently. I think there was just one so far this winter.
We're equipped to deal with it up here (plenty of snow plows, snow blowers, sanders, salters, sidewalk plows, etc.), and our drivers are used to these conditions, and generally modify their driving accordingly. Snow tires (which make a huge difference), plus block heaters are standard (you plug in your car to warm the engine & oil, for easier starting), and 4-wheel drive vehicles are also very common here.
Lots of snow in the winter is just a fact of life here. It's a veritable snowmobiler's paradise. We also get pretty extreme cold, so the snow on side streets tends to stay frozen and hard packed, and not slushy and slippery.
![]() Only - 14 C now (not very cold, by our standards), and we got about another inch of the white stuff overnight. Seems it will be clear today. i just got in from clearing the end of the driveway of the heavy stuff the 5:00 AM snowplow left. Whew!
Having my morning coffee now -- walk to work soon! (First day back after Xmas holidays -- waaah!)
Thanks for all of the interesting responses, keep 'em coming, and TTYL!

A light sprinkling of snow here in Manchester today.
This is the coldest winter I think I've ever known. It seems to have been freezing for ages. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of mornings I've NOT needed to scrape/de-ice the car since the start of November. It's really starting to tick me off. I need a nice warm winter holiday, but fat chance of that.

It snowed twice in late November/Early December. Hasn't snowed since.
But it's really cold outside instead, today it's -5°C (24°F). It usually never gets this cold over here. |

Now don't go into the 'if icicle then popcicle' type of reasoning, Jim - because that is exactly what happened. It's not going to be as you want - ok? Edited by Angelo - January 05 2009 at 09:10 |

We are in dire drought conditions in central California. We have had minor rain and snow, but our aquifers are severely depleted we need about 12 inches of rain and heavy mountain snow in the next couple months just to catch up. Mostly we just have the

Angelo, you're avoiding the issue. I suppose you're going to say next that when this snow thaws, it's no longer snow! Guidelines clearly state that if it used to be pristine snow, it continues to be listed as such even if it now looks like a grey puddle you'd avoid at all costs". Your evasion of this issue is disingenuous in the extreme ![]() |

Southern California had some rain (snow in the mountains great for skiing!) just before and on Christmas. Unusual to have a wet Christmas. By New Years back to 70 degree sunshine weather for the rose Parade and game. Then a little cold front last weekend but should be back to 70's by Wed. Mostly 65-72 depending on where you live for the next 10 days. Not too bad eh?
