What constitutes a good sandwich?
Can low quality bread ruin a sandwich? Or is the bread just the thing that holds the meat? Hmmmmm, decisions, decisions. |

great question!
after much thought on the subject for many years, I believe the bread is the key to a good sandwich. Of course the meat is crucial, but put fillet mignon between two pieces of cheap white bread and you have a disaster.. but put a plain burger on a fresh roll or or honey-wheat bun and you've got a good meal. |

I think the poll answers the question - the secret of a good sandwich is those two ingredients - good meat, + good bread = good sandwich.
Then, I do not class the wafer-sliced processed meats purveyed by the likes of Subway as "good meat" - I was dismayed when an American collegue took me for "one of the best chicken sandwiches I'll ever eat" to discover it was made with this dry, tasteless sorry excuse for meat and the sandwich consisted mainly of lettuce - a chicken sandwich should be made with freshly roast chicken breast cut at least >| |< that thick from the bone and served with the barest hint of lettuce (I asked for a Chicken sandwich, not a Lettuce sandwich
![]() What I don't need is all the garnish, sundry *packing* and other unnecessary accoutrement's that usually come with it - all I need is the appropriate condiment and that's it - less is more.

Well being the grandson of an Italian-American deli owner...the meat makes the sandwich. Don't get me wrong, the bread is important, but the right amount of pastrami with assorted fixins could be eaten off the floor (5 second rule) and still be a great tasting sandwich!

Speaking as something of an auto-condimentor (more so even than Ridcully), may I heartily recommend the following: ![]() Combined fresh horseradish & English mustard - the perfect condiment for the perfect sandwich |

I'm gonna say bread, extremely hard question though. The bread is like the cell wall, it protects the goodness of the sandwich. I can't hold roast beef in my hand and it like a sandwich. But I can hold two pieces of bread together and eat it like a sandwich.

easy question for me, as meat is not essential in my sandwich and I am generally obsessed with bread...

Oh I'm disappointed, I thought this would be a "best sandwich poll" in which case the winner is clearly the steak and cheese sandwich.
And to answer the actual question its totally the meat. I've had plenty of sandwiches that featured average bread, and they were great because of the A++++ level of the meat.

yes the Philly Cheesesteak is possibly the finest blend of beef, cheese, bread, onions and peppers ever devised, and more addictive than good cocaine near the top is hot pastrami (the moist fatty stuff, thin sliced or chopped), a BLT, and a good tuna salad |

The insides. I don't really care about the bread, I just take white all the time. It matters what's in the sandwich to me.

As a lifelong bread lover, I voted for 'bread' - though I would never downplay the importance of the filling (not necessarily meat). In Italy we tend not to use condiments in sandwiches, so the quality of the basic ingredients is essential. That said, I've seen many a sandwich utterly ruined by gummy, tasteless bread, so that the filling, however good, could not save it.

I try to get rid of meat when feeding myself.Of course when I'm invited,I don't say anything if meat is served.Nevertheless filling is important so I generally go for organic vegetables and cheese(even if it's quite expensive)
