Subject: Ultimate Sandwich Question

What constitutes a good sandwich?
Can low quality bread ruin a sandwich?
Or is the bread just the thing that holds the meat?

Hmmmmm, decisions, decisions.

great question!

after much thought on the subject for many years, I believe the bread is the key to a good sandwich.  Of course the meat is crucial, but put fillet mignon between two pieces of cheap white bread and you have a disaster..  but put a plain burger on a fresh roll or or honey-wheat bun and you've got a good meal.

I think the poll answers the question - the secret of a good sandwich is those two ingredients - good meat, + good bread = good sandwich.

Then, I do not class the wafer-sliced processed meats purveyed by the likes of Subway as "good meat" - I was dismayed when an American collegue took me for "one of the best chicken sandwiches I'll ever eat" to discover it was made with this dry, tasteless sorry excuse for meat and the sandwich consisted mainly of lettuce - a chicken sandwich should be made with freshly roast chicken breast cut at least >|         |< that thick from the bone and served with the barest hint of lettuce (I asked for a Chicken sandwich, not a Lettuce sandwich Angry)

What I don't need is all the garnish, sundry *packing* and other unnecessary accoutrement's that usually come with it - all I need is the appropriate condiment and that's it - less is more.  Big smile

Well being the grandson of an Italian-American deli owner...the meat makes the sandwich. Don't get me wrong, the bread is important, but the right amount of pastrami with assorted fixins could be eaten off the floor (5 second rule) and still be a great tasting sandwich!

Speaking as something of an auto-condimentor (more so even than Ridcully), may I heartily recommend the following:

Combined fresh horseradish & English mustard - the perfect condiment for the perfect sandwich

I'm gonna say bread, extremely hard question though. The bread is like the cell wall, it protects the goodness of the sandwich. I can't hold roast beef in my hand and it like a sandwich. But I can hold two pieces of bread together and eat it like a sandwich.

easy question for me, as meat is not essential in my sandwich and I am generally obsessed with bread...

I don't want to hear any comments about my weight AngryLOL

FROM http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=broodwich - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=broodwich
broodwich
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=broodwich# -

It is the Broodwich. The most evil sandwich ever created. Forged in darkness from wheat harvested in hell's half acre. Baked by Beelzebub. Slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chicken force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one eyed mad man. Cheese boiled from the rancid teat of fanged cow. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood.
I ate a bite of the broodwich and I went into an alternate dimension. A voice told me i'd know where it was in time, but the real question is will I care? Probably not.
(This is an ATHF reference)

Oh, sorry, I guess that doesn't really answer your question.

Oh I'm disappointed, I thought this would be a "best sandwich poll"  in which case the winner is clearly the steak and cheese sandwich.

And to answer the actual question its totally the meat.  I've had plenty of sandwiches that featured average bread, and they were great because of the A++++ level of the meat.

yes the Philly Cheesesteak is possibly the finest blend of beef, cheese, bread, onions and peppers ever devised, and more addictive than good cocaine

near the top is hot pastrami (the moist fatty stuff, thin sliced or chopped), a BLT, and a good tuna salad

The insides. I don't really care about the bread, I just take white all the time. It matters what's in the sandwich to me.

As a lifelong bread lover, I voted for 'bread' - though I would never downplay the importance of the filling (not necessarily meat). In Italy we tend not to use condiments in sandwiches, so the quality of the basic ingredients is essential. That said, I've seen many a sandwich utterly ruined by gummy, tasteless bread, so that the filling, however good, could not save it.

Oddly enough whenever I go to the local Philly Cheese Steak chain I usually order the Italian Hoagie.  LOL

I try to get rid of meat when feeding myself.Of course when I'm invited,I don't say anything if meat is served.Nevertheless filling is important so I generally go for organic vegetables and cheese(even if it's quite expensive)

Aaaagghhh, that just reminded me that the place near work where I could go to a good gyro for lunch, Athens Pizza House, closed a few months ago. Cry

Occasional meat sandwiched between two slices of daily bread... I may prefer the meat, but the bread is of chief importance...

There's bread in sandwiches? Confused

My sandwiches usually consist of a piece of meat between two other pieces of meat.

Interesting question, but I think both matter. However, if the sandwich has no meat in it I don't consider it a real sandwich.

Since I don't eat meat, the answer for me is pretty obvious.

The meat is way more important, particularly because there is some meat I'd love to have on sandwiches and others I definitely wouldn't.

And it's vitally important that you don't let your meat loaf, ha ha ha.

The meat, of course. Ideally sun-dried tomato smoked turkey.

But the best sandwich in the world is at some little stand right outside of Burrough market in London: roasted turkey, stuffing and something red and sweet I think was lingonberry jam. I'd go back just to get one of those again...

Although I give a big A to Philly cheese and steak too.

I haven't tried any "bad" bread, so that's why I'm more headed to the meat answer, but if I had tasted a really awfull bread, then the answer is definitely bread and with no meat Wink

I think Cacho pretty much stated what I was going to. The meat and other contents of the sandwich are what I care about the most.

I submit that neither is important as there is a vessel for which to transport Vegemite.

I've actually never had the stuff. I just like the name and the fact that it gets mentioned in a Men at Work song.

I just realized a while ago that aside from pizzas I haven't eaten any meat at home since summer 2006. But I still enjoy my sandwiches as much as I used to. So bread it is.

I prefer a German "Butterbrot" to a sandwich. Just a slice of bread, some butter and (preferably) cheese on top, but marmalade, liverwurst or salami will also be fine. Since Germany has the largest variety of bread in the world (there are more than 300 different kinds of bread in Germany), a "Butterbrot" is more than just bread, butter and something on top here. Germany also has the largest variety of sausages and beer in  the world, by the way. But please don't think German eating and drinking habits can be summed up with "bread, sausages and beer". LOL
The Earl of Sandwich may have invented the sandwich, but it became most popular in the USA, where it usually is an ersatz for proper lunch. And "proper lunch" for me means what Americans have for dinner - the warm meal of the day. In the evening just a few Butterbrote, please. You sleep better afterwards.

Why not?

Add a cigarette afterwards & you have a balanced 4 course meal

But maybe that's just me...

I can live without a cigarette, but will take for 4th course what some people like to smoke a cigarette after, if you get my drift.  Embarrassed
