I would have given a million card just to get that one. I don't care about any others.

So no. Wink

Ha! I'm on the verge of giving The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome a 5 star review... probably going to reconsider it, but that's how serious this is.

Yeah I didn't review any VdGG album for the same reason. Don't think I'd give The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome a 5 though. I rated 'em on RYM though and it makes me look like an annoying fanboy. LOL

If you can get me Robert Wyatt or something, ok.

Latimer isn't Santa Claus.

Or one of my 2 favorite prog figures.

The four central songs of that album are beyond incredible. That particular album just makes me quite annoyed at how underrated Guy Evans is as a drummer... subtle, experimental. I'd probably say that's my favourite drumming on an album ever, but then everyone here'd look at me funny. Starless And Bible Black is pretty tough competition, though.

I think Hugh Banton is even more underrated than Guy Evans. For some reason, at first, you sometimes don't really hear everything he does. Once you focus on it, you realise how octopus-like and awesome it is and you cannot ignore it again in your life.

And I agree 100% about Evans of course.

I agree on that. What Banton basically does is really incorporate an organ fully in a rock context, and noone else seems determined enough to do that. His range of tones is fantastic, his feel is always there, and he incorporates classical elements so very gracefully, and the sheer melting edge of those tones on the opening of La Rossa is a moment that gives me goosebumps in a way that no other keyboardist has yet.

Not to mention that solo at the end of APOLK... macrocosms within microcosms... not sure if, as the baldies say, it's Banton and not Fripp, but if it is, all credit to him.

Expect heaps of hate mail soon.

And do entertain us.

Hate mail #1

'Rambling piece of absolute nonsense.'

'Your collection can definitely go without the unnecessarily dramatic vocals of Hammill, the lackluster songwriting, and the uninteresting instrumentation.'

'It comes across as overly emotional and bland to me.' Confused?!

'though this is again the best track lyrically in that regard (that doesn't say much, however)' Shocked?!

The point... you have missed it LOL

The thing about Van Der Graaf Generator, especially Pawn Hearts and Still Life, is that you have to put something in to get something out. You need to involve yourself with all the little subtleties in the music to enjoy it that much, and I guess you need to feel an emotional link to the pieces to even start doing that. I mean, I can appreciate that they're not for everyone, but that album is extremely clever if you do look at how it achieves its aims. It does everything it wants to do. Probably my eighth or ninth favourite album.

On the production: I think it's meant to create an atmosphere, and to help them express emotional ideas such as confusion or fear, which would be completely undermined by very clean production... Again, not remotely conventional, but that's the fun of it. Fair enough if that's a particular gripe of yours, but I'm fairly confident there really is a reason for what the band are doing throughout that album. If you don't like it, fine, but it really is a lot more than just 'rambling'.

Anyway, I'll try not to be too argumentative here, it's a nice thread... guess I have pretty much the reverse syndrome about some classic Rush (lots of Moving Pictures and Hemispheres, in particular... not emotional/emotive enough for me, lyrically messy, and not doing a lot of the whole 'expression' thing, which is basically what I listen to music for). It's mostly about tastes.

Oh, and, good job on the CTTE review Clap It remains pretty much the definitive prog album for a reason, even if there are three or four I'm slightly fonder of.

I respect your response here, Rob. Best hate mail I could have gotten. Clap

It's extremely hard to explain to someone who is so emotionally attached to music as you are to VDGG; I know that for a fact because I'm infinitely attached to all of Rush's albums to say the least. I've tried many times to enjoy it (in fact VDGG have 144 plays on my last.fm alone, not counting all the times I listened to them elsewhere), and Pawn Hearts is probably my least favorite VDGG album. I guess it really is just a taste thing, as the whole piece of music comes across as too disjointed and lyrically messy to me (as you feel about Rush).

And thanks for the CTTE praise. I had to do that album because it's been one of my favorites for years. Big smile

I'll need to redo that.  It's my mistake.  I didn't take Neal Morse off the list (and didn't add him to your list).  Funny that you landed on him twice like that, though.

I believe I do owe you two cards for this review: http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=189559

If I am not mistaken, you get two cards for it.  Disregard this post.  I'll award you two new ones soon, unless you show me I already gave them to you.

I actually did note that those cards were given out (I just didn't take Morse off the master list).  I just put all your four cards under Mike's name.  LOL

I was a little in the cups last night.  Smile
