Hmm, best? Isn't that a word that is quite complicated to use? I really can't consider something better than other, just taste.

My fave prog band from now is The Flower Kings.

This thread is ridiculous because:

It is not a poll

PT are barely prog in my eyes--and even if they definitively are, they aren't bringing anything new or interesting in the slightest to the table, unlike other prog bands. Not that that makes it bad music, but it shocks me that the poor man's unholy child of Pink Floyd and Opeth are so resoundingly popular here. Does anybody else think half of In Abstentia sounds like "normal" modern rock? When I first heard Blackest Eyes I thought I was listening to freaking Breaking Benjamin. And before the legion attacks: I am only responding in the same fashion he posted. ;-)

You are using both the words "best" and "unarguable".

You know, I tried to listen to Delirium Cordia, I really did. But it's....uh....

Patton's much better when he's standing next to John Zorn. ;-)

This poll just bristles my fur haha LOL What nerve to ask such a arbitrary question.

Top Nowadys Proggers

When it comes down to just plain musicianship

Agollach-
Atmospheric Death Metal

Little Atlas-
Prog/ Rock
Anekdoten- Experimental / Progressive / Psychedelic
Winds- Metal / Progressive / Rock
Planet X- Jazz Fusion
Opeth-
Metal / Progressive
Gojira- Death Metal
Porcupine Tree-
Heavy Prog Light Vocals
and my new favorite- The Gang Font- Jazz Fusion

Really though you compare Bands that may be the best at what they do.
But porcupine tree is definitely the best of its new kind. I don't think that it is the best Heavy Prog band just because they are too poppy. But amazing musicians none the less.

I see why Porcupine Tree are so popular which is what I`m not sure I like about them , I think of  them in the same way I think of Floyd,  maybe I`ll pick up more of their CD's cheap at Kmart some day (if you catch my sarcasm)  it's Claytons prog "the prog you listen to when you are not listening to prog"  Wink

You can't say best without getting into arguments.  Particularly if you're on of us who has been listening for many many years and have built up a huge collection.

My favorites, if you use the qualifier "primarily new to this decade":
Explosions In The Sky
Gongzilla
Maserati
Monade
Pineapple Thief, The
Phideaux
Talisma
Parallel Mind
Crimson Jazz Trio
No Sound
Observatory, The
Pure Reason Revolution
Reasoning, The

Porcupine Tree does nice Floyd-influenced pop with prog elements. But #1 current prog band??? Not so much.

Opeth are probably the most popular band doing prog or prog-related music right now. Others have mentioned some other more traditional style proggers making great music now. I'll put in another vote for Beardfish among those.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Yes - still love it though, because I think they're making better straightforward rock than most everything else I've heard recently.

Porcupine Tree and Mars Volta are very good bands, among the best.

And special mention to Tool also.

And that's OK, I just don't see why it is was hailed as a prog masterpiece on a prog website. Has the whole world gone mad!?

Come on, we're prog fans, surely we've realized the "large numbers does not equal truth" thing. Isn't that what drives the all our conspiracy theorists? You all also think CTTE is good, so I really can't take what you say seriously. ;-)

Well I don't need you to take me seriously, you listen to Blue Oyster Cult. ;-)

But I will end this now as well since I have the feeling a banhammer is lurking in the shadows. ;-)

Oh no, I have a wide taste in music . Why don't I throw Meat Loaf down there so no one will take me seriously.

Porcupine Tree 1989-1999 = one of the best prog bands ever. But not nowdays.
Bigger on the inside.
