Good taste Olde Fogey.
I had the pleasure of seeing Alan Parsons and his band last weekend in Las Vegas. He's had his current tour lineup for some time - so they are really tight.
Going from memory, here is some of the set list (not in order)
Dr Tarr and Prof Fether
Breakdown/The Raven
Don't Let it Show
I Wouldn't Want to be Like You
Damned If I Do
Luciferama
Don't Answer Me
Sirius/Eye in the Sky
Psychobabble
Time
Games People Play
La Sagrada Familia
Prime Time
As you can see, they went with the older/classic hits and my only complaint is that the concert was too short.
Take care,

Never really understood what's prog and what's not. I don't think it matters. I like much ELO, and I like some APP. I don't know if either of them are "prog", but a lot of APP hasn't "hit the spot" for me.
Now... What do people think about Mike Batt's album, "Tarot Suite"? Is that prog? Does it matter?!

ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA is in the Crossover category, anyway, and that is a Prog category (whereas Alan Parsons Project is in the Prog-Related category). |

One could argue however that APP were placed into Prog-related before Crossover prog ever existed. They might require further evaluation as they might fit better into Crossover prog then they would have fit into Art Rock. Just a thought, not an opinion.

Indeed, they were, and I have been thinking about suggesting that Crossover consider APP (then Prog-Related would have to agree to the move). For me it would fit very well, but I would want to research well first before making the proposal to ensure that it wouldn't be too controversial an addition to a Prog category. I grew up thinking of it as a kind of Prog, so that may have tainted my objectivity (and, to be perfectly honest, though a favourite of mine for many years, it's been quite while since I've last listened to it, and I know much more about Prog now than I did even a few years ago, so I'd want to listen again). Heres me thinking my name is witty.
However i don't beleive APP are anywhere near prog, but, that doesn't make them a bad band. I do have all of thier albums and when the mood suits i listen to them. And, have done so for more years than i can remember. Crossover seems a bit ambiguous, ELO were probably close to prog on thier first two albums.....but went commercial soon after, and even hit disco on the Discovery album. Once again, a band i love with great songs and a few good albums......but really should never be discussed on a prog site.

Hey! I think your name is witty. I think ELO are prog enough on their third album as well. Most profilic progbands turned commercial at some point. I think progrelated would be the perfect place for a band like ELO. Free-Jazz and electroacoustic composers and psychedelic rock are being discussed here too. Should we stop because this is a progsite? |

hahhahaha patience... or has it even been talked about in months... it should be a simple matter for the admin team to release a band to a team that wants it. Not a court case... |

not sure what your standards of prog are... but assuming you have actually listened to the first 3 albums. Not even the first 2 ..... and would LOVE to know just what your standards of just what prog IS. Edited by micky - September 20 2008 at 09:43 |

Great thing about Alan Parsons is his esoteric knowledge...

To all the forum members that answered my original question - an apology is required. I have been offline for many weeks, due to family problems - my sisters in hospital and I have to take on the carer routine: means getting up at 6.00am (uk time) doing my caring, coming back at 13.00pm and getting some bed rest, then going out at 16:00 and staying put until 23:00 hrs, before heading home to bed. I am riding a Honda SH 125i on "L" (learner plates) and hate fog and rain, particularly when its dark. Anyone who comes up with an idea for a battery operated skid lid wiper will get my support. Best wishes as always. |

I used to watch and video (UK) C4 Anime films, I used to read Science Fiction, and gained a degree in Librarianship and did a Thesis on Lord of the Rings. I currently play DS2 on my XP OS PC. I am a sci fi geek, I suppose - but are there any others like me out there?

To Gaston, Esoteric Knowledge (?)
He got a collective of gifted musicians together and let them coalese and create ... music which we adore. I would love to obtain a mp3 version of Gary Moore`s 7 inch single entitled "The Loner". I purchased 4 copies of the record in question, which were stolen by an ex ex ex girlfriend. Gary Moore would have been a welcome addition to the APP - But the project missed him, and yet produced excellent rock music.

Our thoughts and best wishes go out to you at a time like this, my friend. We wish your sister a full and speedy recovery, and look forward to your future forum contributions, when you are able to find the time.
Keep smiling...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Tales...would be my favourite. I reckon you would rather like Barclay James Harvest too if you like this band.

Yeah, really a lot of deep themes going on that deal with almost the occult, in many cases... 1) Edgar Allan Poe (was deeply in tune with spiritualism and the supernatural) 2) Artificial Intelligence 3) Pyramids 4) Women (specifically biblical themes) 5) Chance/luck and addiction 6) More Egyptian stuff (but actually about power/ambition) 7) Poisons 8) Consumerism and vanity (complete with Ouroboros album cover!) 9) Mental Illness 10) Eccentricity (architectural in Gaudi's case) (not familiar with Freudiana but sounds like more thematically related to Stereotomy) Alan Parsons is extremely influenced by ancient culture, astrology, alchemy, and perhaps occult societies like Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism. But. This is only MY opinion. :) |
