I saw DT in Chicago with 3, Between the Buried and me, and Opeth. It was a very dissapointing show (DT I mean, all the other bands were amazing). Don't get me wrong, DT sounded great, like listening to one of thier albums, but the arrogance ondisplay was astounding. Never, NEVER, have I seen such a self-absorbed band. John Myung was the only guy who came off as being cool, and big surprise, he had the least amount of solos. Rudess and Patrucci were alright, butthe constant close ups of thier soloes got really old really fast. You can play good, we get it, so could you stop showing off for 5 seconds and just play? Patrucci looked totally bored. He looked like he would rather be having a root canal. LaBrie was annoying as hell. He kept throwing the mic stand in there air like it was really a show o strength. It was just idiotic.Though the worst BY FAR was Mike Portnoy. What a DOUCHE. He kept standing up and nodding his head like he was hot sh*t. He would point to his little camera that was on his drum set, and when the stage hand was late with his mic, he bitched him out so everyone could hear in the middle of the song. It was shameful. Portnoy isn't that good. . . in fact, I would go so far as to say he may be the most overrated drummer of all time. There are so many greater drummers. Portnoy is mediocre at best.

You might be wondering (or you might not) why I haven't written this until now. Well, I decided to when I had my iTunes on shuffle and a DT song came on, and I hit skip right away. It was then I realized since the concert I have not listened to one DT song, and have no desire to.

I was a huge DT fan. Then I saw them live. It is something I greatly regret.

The showingoffish confidence is what makes them a good live band. If everyone stood like John Myung the whole show, it'd be just like listening to the record.

BTW Mike Portnoy is one of the funniest and lively performers I know. Also, he wasn't the youngest drummer to get inducted into the drummers hall of fame for no reason at all.

There is a diffeence between "showingoffish confidence" and complete cockiness. And, I don't really care when he was put in the "Drummers Hall of Fame," he is overrated beyond measure. And there was nothing funny about him. He acted like a moron.

Don't accuse me of failing just because I insult yout precious Dream Theater. That just makes you, sir, a jackass.

I really really like Dream Theater. That being said, Mike Portnoy annoys the hell out of me a lot of the time. He's definetely not the best drummer in the world, and he seems to be more of an entertainer than an artist.

I can't speak about the rest of your post though, other than I'm jealous that you live near a town that had progressive nation, they didn't even come to any town In Arizona.Cry

After a while I got a bit bored of DT but after seeing them live in Puerto Rico for the first time I started loving them again. Still one of my all time favorites.Thumbs%20Up

i saw DT back in march 06 in Asbury Park, and, yes, they did seem a tad over-confident in themselves, but i think when you write and play the kind of music they make, you kind of have to, otherwise you might mess up or something. That and there's some fans that get off on that stuff. Im surprised Im even defending them, i havent listened to DT in months (aside from my friend throwing A Change Of Seasons on yesterday, that was niiice!)

btw, Myung is the "quiet Asian guy". That's why he chills a lot. what did he say, like, 4 words on the Live at Budokan DVD?

and isnt this supposed to be an "appreciation" thread?

See, I can do that too MisterProg.

I don't live close to Chicago actually, me and my dad drove about 5 hours for the concert.

And I am sorry if judging them solely on how I "percieved them to act" is something I shouldn't do, but hey, I can't like a band when the members act like assholes. They aren't that good.

And I will check out the band Canvas Solaris Plankowner, thanks for the suggestion.

And I know this is the "Appreciation" forum, but I didn't know where else to post this.

live acts are part of what can make or break a band. terrible bands with great live acts are very successful and vice versa. how else would gwar make it? ive seen a some of DT's live stuff and wasnt very impressed, particularly with petrucci and labrie, but then again im not a big DT guy anyway. But i can see how it would put you off. i kind of had the opposite thing happen to me with magma. didnt like em, saw them live (video) and was blown away.
dont really understand everyone's reaction myself. . .

there's a live review subsection I believe where you can post things like this

I think personal problems with band members is a rather petty reason to dislike a band but could be a valid one nonetheless. However, both times I've seen them they just seemed like they were having a good time, nothing more.

also editing people's posts is so 2 years ago
though people use "fail" outside of WoW in that context, its permeated the majority of the internet

LOL Oh my, you guys make me chuckle LOL

It's a band! Geez... PA is supposed to be celebrating bands. If you don't like them, don't listen to them! But don't, for the sake of not irritating people, bitch about them.

I didn't post this for the sole purpose of irritating people. As you can see, some people even seem to agree with me. And a forum where no one is allowed to express a distaste for any band seems like it would be a pretty boring opinion.

And ss for Portnoy being hilarious. . . Zappa was. Hilarious. Akerfeldt of Opeth is hilarious. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are hilarious. Portnoy is just an annoying, arrogant, overrated jerk-off.

it seems you've had a pre-existing problem with Portnoy and this set it off
also this thread is kinda funny because its like bizarro PA where people are rushing to defend DT rather than sh*t on them as per usual
notice they're more or less the only band that's allowed to have that happen
but
tradition is tradition

I also agree Portnoy can be a bit pompous but I judge by music and keep personal lives seperate. From my understanding Robert Fripp was a prick but he was a f**king amazing guitarist
