^^^Not sure what you mean then...but perhaps they had the commercial intention(I suppose that's what you mean) without ever reaching it. Emo pop???Confused

Opposite?? I'm not sure about that since I don't think they've ever been commercial. The Scattering Of Ashes is a bit of a disappointment. They returned to the same formula as before: repeating rhythms over and over again(listen to the first 2 albums and that one carefully and you'll notice what I mean) and in Buried In Oblivion they did something really different within their particular sound. And the new album...well it's even more of a disappointment though not entirely.Cry

I think Buried is their most commercial sounding by far (which is not to say I don't like it). They could easily have jumped ship on metal and started making whiny emo pop. Sure, they didn't see commercial success with it, but that's not what I'm talking about.

the video and lyrics for Severe Emotional Distress are pretty goddamn emo, to be crass

anyway
has anyone heard anything about the new Cynic album? I think it's supposed to come out in a few months

I did, ordered the two box sets which covers their 4 studios albums.

plus the Aslan demo and the live show dvd.
that is all you need.  I hope you love them as much as I do.....they are really something else, certainly without peer imo....

I also hope that Waltz will find some new  aficionados.Smile
At first I thought that A Social Grace is an interesting but very messy album, now it belongs to my all time favourites.
I really like their second 2 efforts, too, although they are less complicated than the first 2.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to hearing Waltz ... and Swano's "Moontower" (went ahead and ordered it last night) ..  Also ordered, Edge of Sanity's "Unorthodox," "Spectral Sorrows," "Purgatory Afterglow," and "When All is Said."

Agreed!! this is one of the reasons why after Buried In Oblivion the band started declining...they'll never be the same again.Cry

Some vocals on the Into Eternity PA sample song really sound quite ridiculuous.
They seem to be a one-album-band, based on the ratings. I would like to hear Buried actually.

It had some touches of Nevermore as you said Jay,  but to me it was more a general groove metal vibe than Nevermore in particular. Perhaps a more death metallish groove metal sound perhaps?
Hmm, perhaps it's groove math metal?
Definitely Technical/Extreme metal, but I need a few more listen as to decide whether it could really be Tech/Extreme prog metal though.

Well, you're the Nevermore expert, and I agree! I'm really not that good when it comes to classifications. One thing is sure: I love it!

Well even if they were influenced by Nevermore, the influence is very slight because after listening to the whole album, I didn't really hear anything that made me think "this part reminds me of Nevermore".
Chances are, they might not have been influenced by them at all, and perhaps they were influenced by straight out groove metal bands, Meshuggah (who are kinda groove-ish) and quite probably math metalcore stuff like Botch and Converge etc.

I added a great band called Into the Moat to Tech/Extreme last evening. There are only two songs on their Myspace page but their only full-length album(so far),"The Design",is amazing.Very technical yet chaotic, with losts of breaks and abrupt time changes and some jazz influences thrown in.

Metalheads have  soft parts too, specially when it's about your family.  Trust me.Wink
It's really nice that my lifetime partner also likes most of the stuff I listen to. In fact, we met during a concert. It's not far from reality and I wouldn't mind at all if my boy would appreciate metal the way I do, for it runs in the blood.Big%20smile

Haven't heard the new Enslaved. I will check it out.

Yeah, it is, dont bother JD. The vocals have all but deteriorated, they literally sound like a broken garbage disposal, therefore they're relying on clean vocals a lot more, which could be a good thing, but it's just not enslaved. Also all the black/viking metal energy is almost completely gone, it's just so lackluster when compared to RUUN, and that album is considered pretty mellow by the hardcore fans...

I wasnt impressed.
