Sometimes one can judge a book by its cover:

And pleeease, no more suggestions looking like this. Just thinking about what this sounds like makes me ill.

Judging an album just by its cover doesn't seem that advanced a position to me... Many prog classics wouldn't be here....

But I agree, AVANTASIA is not prog. Not because their covers, but because of their music.

See, sometimes I don't need no advanced position to tell that this ain't prog. I judge Barbara Cartland books by the covers too. Shame on me! I just knew there was no way in hell progressive sound could come out of that D&D boardgame lookalike.

^ there were quite a few classic Prog bands who picked up fantasy related topics ... Lord of the Rings/Tolkien is only one obvious example.

That cover is progressive, in a sense - it goes places no other cover has gone before (not that any other cover would want to...)

I know Mike. that's why I wrote sometimes. I'm very good at spotting these subtle nuances.

^ Nevertheless emphasising that word implied that for you that is the case here ... that the cover rules out any chances of that album being progressive.

BTW: I think that it's quite cheesy, but cheese and prog have a history of going well together ... Wink

Well, I leave it up to all of you to stay "openminded" about operametalsuggestions looking like this.

^ I'm actually against their inclusion, in case you were wondering (as is shown in the prog metal chart). Smile

Moving this thread where it belongs: Suggest New Bands/Artists.

And while I'm at it: it would be interesting to see bands suggested in the forum judged by their music, not by whether or not one likes the album cover. I have no problem with the cover being discussed, but it seems these things are only brought up here in a negative sense, and we have enough of that in these forums already. Stern%20Smile

Its already been done? By who? I thought this was the first time someone dissmissed a suggested band for the look of their albumcovers?

Avantasia is currently approved for prog-related.

If there's anyone with a bio, band picture, website, etc, feel free to send me and I'll add them. Albums could be added later one by one.

^ Is there any explanation why this band is cleared for addition and other, more deserving metal bands for prog related are not? So far Iron Maiden are the only prog-related metal band in the archives ... now it's Iron Maiden and Avantasia. Am I the only one who can't see any logic behind it?

Confused

I cannot remember any rule stating that Iron Maiden should be the only prog-related metal band, Mike.

Actually, considering the number of new metal bands (and others not-so-new) it's almost sure that more metal or metal-like bands will be added to related. Smile

I'd thought that some of the "more deserving metal bands for prog related" are already in Prog Metal.  LOL Wink

^ so far the PMT has been avoiding/postponing prog related metal additions ... and for good reasons, at least I used to think. At PA I've learned to expect the unexpected, but I must say I'm really floored by this decision.

BTW: I know all the Avantasia albums - in my opinion they're not only not prog, but also not even prog related. I know that some disagree ... but the same is true for Metallica (there are many supporters and many who oppose it). Only a few days ago I was talking about what can make music prog (or prog related) in the Coldplay thread ... unfortunately Avantasia is one of those bands/projects which use prog elements to embellish their music without actually making it progressive. That such a band is chosen over more worthy additions simply frustrates me.

Well, if we add Avantasia then we should also be prepared to add Iced Earth, Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica or Fairyland.
