But they're so good for containing spam in one place. Whereas you spew yours all over the damn place. |

Heaven forbid PA's younger members have a place to be kids...
But as long as you're consistent and would've banned The Grey Room, too, Micky, then I'm not quite as annoyed by your post. Edited by Pnoom! - August 11 2008 at 18:03 |

Locking is fine, could you please not hide the on-topic ones? I don't want all of those RIO Room, Italian prog, etc. posts to disappear. :(

I basically agree with these limits as long as it does good for the site (and the timeout are a lot less happening since, yay) but I also support the thing of not hiding the appreciation threads. |

Hmm. This does pose a bit of a problem. I have no problem with throwing old VR threads in the trash, but those appreciation threads do have a lot of useful information - it would really be a shame to not be able to access them.
edit: is there any way to implement a sliding window, such that for every new post > 4000 the oldest post in the thread is removed? Edited by NaturalScience - August 12 2008 at 11:35 |

I know, it's just the hypocrisy of banning the chat room for young people and not old people simply because young people aren't boring and slow and thus clog up the server more that bugs me. |

If I'm not mistaken old threads are still accessible but stopped at 4000, so all you have to do is start a new one after 4000 to keep it alive?

EL said hidden. Deleting the chat threads is fine (in fact it's probably what we should have been doing originally), but it really would make me sad not to be able to go through some of those old appreciation threads. Yes, you could ask whatever question you have again, but some people aren't posting as much anymore... |

So I think the idea is start a new thread at 3500 so it doesn't get to 4000, and then it doesn't get hidden. |

The reason the threads are hidden too is so that they are no accessed during searches etc. The point about being able to refer back for info is taken, although finding such posts in a very large thread may prove challenging anyway.
Let's see how much improvement there is, then look to see if M@x can find any compromises.

Here's my ideal solution:
When a useful thread (like RIO drop in) reaches 4000 posts, close it and sticky it for two months. That way, people can still have access to the latest suggestions in it for a good while. After the two months, when people have gleaned the info they need from it, then hide it, since the new thread will have taken off and the old one won't be needed anymore. That way, the site isn't significantly slowed down by larger threads (since the threads like Rio Drop In take a long time to reach 4000, meaning there will only be a handful of stickied large threads at a time, if that) that linger forever, and people don't lose the information they need. Of course Velvet Rooms and the like can disappear as they reach 4000. Edited by Pnoom! - August 12 2008 at 16:36 |

A solution like this sounds reasonable - and there aren't many prog forum threads of this size, so it shouldn't effect performance too much, I would think. |

Especially since they would only appear temporarily, and there would only be one or two at a time at most given how long they take to reach 4000 posts.
