I think freezing totally depends on the content of the disk. I'm not a programmer nor do I know much about it, but with a very complex game with a lot going on like GTA4, it's a testament to how well the game was tested that there are only a few freezings out of all the games. I think with the first run of Xbox 360s, freezing was a bit more common, but again it's a complex system and bugs always need to be ironed out. I hope they learned their lesson and not rush a console out before Christmas when it hasn't been tested for bugs.

From reading a lot of developer interviews, that is exactly what it is. Debugging is one of the hardest parts of making a game. It is not as bad as some other game release like Shadowrun or Hellgate:London which had multiple bugs on release. I like the way Steam handles it releasing games only when they feel they are ready and having patches out quickly as soon as bugs are known.

Tales of Phantasia is great, Mike.  The water really looks good and the part of the game where they model a Venice-type town also looks good.

I think that's the same game anyway.

I have never had any game freeze up on the 360.And I have Eternal Sonata too,and had no problems with it.

The graphics in the game are awesome even for today's standards.  It was never imported to the US on SNES, but I think there are Gameboy and Playstation ports, I have the Japanese Rom that was translated, it's great so far.  I also played the first Star Ocean a while ago, which has great graphics as well.  It was fun at first but eventually it got boring and repetitive.

Yep, it is the same game I've played.  It was one of the last RPG releases on SNES and yes, it was never released outside of Japan and I too have that translated version.

It's fun too... I am not over keen on the platform-style combat though... I'd have preferred a Seiken Densetsu 3 style combat system.

The interwebz have produced a Tecmo Super Bowl romhack with the rosters updated to the 2007 season.

Dreams really do come true!

Oh, and I tried that Lufia 2 that you guys were talking about.  It's a great RPG, although it could use to take a few risks.  It feels like a mix of Zelda and Final Fantasy that really doesn't bring very much NEW to the table.

Started playing Final Fantasy XII, not bad so far....I have this creeping feeling though that the main protagonist is going to be more Tidus-like as the game progresses Ermm

After playing FFXII, I started to appreciate Tidus a lot more. ;)

I didn't get very far into that one, it started out  good but the story and characters didn't seem to progress much, plus the battles got difficult and I didn't feel like spending much time leveling up if the story wasn't worth it.  The battle system and world were fantastic, if only Square could have made a more interesting story and developed/interactive characters... oh well.

Yeah, the battle system is very different (well, it's similar to FF online but I never got into that) so it has mixed opinions.  I liked fighting the wanted monsters and the actual skill system (forget the name) itself.  Some people enjoyed the story too, so you might end up liking it.  At first it seemed promising, but as time went it seemed to get zzzz worthy

I don't know if the new consoles have anything yet, but I don't have any so it doesn't really matter.  I might pick up some PS/PS2 rpgs that I missed back in the day.

It's not supposed to bring anything new to the table, Jake, it's a SNES RPG. LOL

Play the first game anyhow, the plot may make more sense to you, not that there is a complicated plot, mind you.

By the way, the Lufia games were released before FFVI, so any similarities to that game are coincidental.  Of course, they can bear resemblance to earlier FF titles though.  That's probably why it doesn't take those risks because so much.

Check out Tales of Phantasia or Seiken Densetsu 3 if you want to see more advanced SNES RPGs, in terms of graphics and playability.

The only problem with SNES RPGs is that they are far too expensive, that's why I've been buying the GBA ports, they're often about 1/3rd the price of the SNES original and have been improved is some areas, like the extra dungeons added in the GBA ports of FF4,5 and 6.

Still SNES RPG prices aren't as bad as Sega Saturn RPG prices, there are only about 4 or 5 RPGs worth having on the Saturn (in English) and all of them tend to cost £40 or more, plus for a change the US prices are often higher than the UK prices. Cry

Still the maddest prices I've seen for games so far tend to be games for the Neo Geo AES or FM Towns Marty which often go for over £500, honestly who has enough money to afford games at those prices?

Nick, you won't find SNES RPGs like Tales of Phantasia and Seiken Densetsu on the UK or American market because they were Japanese releases only.  However, with the use of ZSNES, you'll be able to get translated versions of most decent RPGs.  It's the only way you'll be able to play them.

Lufia and Lufia II however should be able to be found and as they were released for the SNES and Super Famicom (the Japanese SNES, of course).

I know that, most SNES RPGs are Japanese only but the few that are in English are a bugger to get hold of except the Lufia games which look to be quite good value, I've never been a fan of emulators and translations of frankly dodgy legality as I like to play games as they were meant to be played. Wink

Unfortunately I can't afford the Lufia games at the moment as in the past 2 months I've bought over 25 games (for my GBA, GC and Saturn) and a few bits of hardware (my GBA, 2 Saturn wheels, A Saturn Action Replay). I'll look at getting them over the summer though as I'm planning to spend a lot of summer playing RPG games. Currently I've got Final Fantasy 4,5 and 6 for my GBA, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Pokemon Colosseum for my GC but I would like to play RPGs on all 4 of the consoles I use regularly so I'll probably get Lufia and Lufia 2 for my SNES as they are relatively cheap (particularly the US copies) and possibly try to get one of the cheaper RPGs for my Saturn. Probably Dark Saviour as that's the most common and therefore the cheapest although if I can get Shining Wisdom or Shining The Holy Ark for less than they normally go for I'll definitely go for them.

Between now and the end of my exams though I'm mostly going to be playing in short bursts so I'll mainly be playing racing games or side/vertical scrolling shooters. Sega RAlly in particular will probably get a lot of playtime as it's always fun to play and is suitable for any amount of time between 3 minutes and 3 hours, although any arcade racer will probably be popular with me over the next few weeks, I'm particularly looking forward to getting Zero 4 Champ DooZy J GT-R (yeah it's really called that) from Japan within the next week as it's a drag racing game so it should be very good for getting a game in between revision periods.

Well of course the legality issues are indeed an issue but the translations are excellent and I would play those games that way every time.

I haven't convinced you have I?

Didn't think so!
