Music Collection Question - Remasters

Just realised that in 2004 Porcupine Tree remastered and expanded Coma Devine. I absolutely love that live album and I know that I'm gonna have to get my hands on the rerelease for the extra tracks. I'm sure this has happened to most people here in the past. You bought an album back when it was first put out on CD and eventually the band remaster or expand the original. Chances are if you enjoy the album, especially if extra tracks are offered you're going to want to hear the new version. So do you buy the new copy and keep the original in your archive... y'know some of these original CD versions can be worth something! Or do you sell/trade in/give away the original when you get the new version as chances are you'll never listen to it again anyway? Just curious. This isn't the first time I've thought about this, I have the original versions of Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws and want to get hold of the remasters with extras too.

I think most musicians are milking it while they can, after all there are enough people outthere pirating music to counter this unfortunately. When the real digital age kicks in I think only collectors will be interested in the ' tangible' formats of bygone years. Hold onto your vinyls and original CDs!!!

The mix of the original CD release of that Nekar album was actually a screw up.  I had that one.  I understand where you're coming from.  Another problem with a lot of the first issues of CDs for albums that came from the LP age is that they made directly from the LP masters when they should have been remastered for the CD format.

I gave away my original copy of FoaBP when the dvda version (with Nil Recurring) came out.It was a while after that the wife started complaining that she couldn't play it in the car anymore! Had to borrow the giveaway back and burn it.She's happy now.

The biggest deal for me with this issue was Robert Fripp's solo masterpiece "Exposure". I had a tape of the original album, and then when I went to buy it on vinyl, Fripp had released the second edition, which although perhaps an improvement in sound had used various different takes, made edits and even removed parts and it just bugged me horribly - so much so that I had to go out and find a used copy of the original. I still can't tell whether the original was better, or whether I had just got used to it and didn't like change!

I have almost a habit of always lookng on the used CD's first.
So i've gotten many "Old CD Releases" very cheap through used CD stores & Swedish eBay!

Well yeah. PT becomes popular, but the original pressings were low. So they print up more, but since the band has a bigger budget, why not put more effort into the re-release?
