Just realised that in 2004 Porcupine Tree remastered and expanded Coma Devine. I absolutely love that live album and I know that I'm gonna have to get my hands on the rerelease for the extra tracks. I'm sure this has happened to most people here in the past. You bought an album back when it was first put out on CD and eventually the band remaster or expand the original. Chances are if you enjoy the album, especially if extra tracks are offered you're going to want to hear the new version. So do you buy the new copy and keep the original in your archive... y'know some of these original CD versions can be worth something! Or do you sell/trade in/give away the original when you get the new version as chances are you'll never listen to it again anyway? Just curious. This isn't the first time I've thought about this, I have the original versions of Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws and want to get hold of the remasters with extras too.

In the case of PT, I would definitely hold on to the Delerium original releases. The reasons why are:
1) on some of the albums he rerecorded and redid some tracks, ie, especially on the first album where he replaced real drumming for the synthetic drumming that was on the original.
2) I like to have the albums with the original tracklist as I first heard it, which is sometimes preferable to having an 'expanded' album with sometimes weaker extra tracks added. (in the case of Coma Divine though, more is better, especially since its a live album)
3) there is some collector value for completists, especially since the Delerium releases are now out of print
For bands I am nuts about, like PT, Genesis etc, I tend to be a completist and get and keep everything. For instance, I have the original Genesis Cds, the 'definitive remasters', the Japanese mini sleeves, and now the remixed new ones that just came out. Again, sometimes remastering or remixing alters the original, and I want to have how it sounded originally, if only for comparison.

This is actually something that really annoys me. I have albums on vinyl (which I kept!), which I bought again as CDs, and then again when new versions came out with additional tracks. How much money do these bands think we have! Given that technology continues to advance how many more 'better' versions or formats can we expect in the future. I prefer to spend my cash on new stuff, but admit that with my most favourite artists I wouldn't be able to resist the lure of a completely new track. I don't keep older CD versions unless there are significant differences eg. like PT's re-recorded stuff. ------------- "Moonlight is bleeding from out of your soul" |

I think most musicians are milking it while they can, after all there are enough people outthere pirating music to counter this unfortunately. When the real digital age kicks in I think only collectors will be interested in the ' tangible' formats of bygone years. Lucky for me I got in on Tree later in the game, so everything I have picked up is a remaster with the bonus tracks. With the exception of Stupid Dream which I happened to pay too much more just before the news of the remaster came out.  I'm one of those that had a big vinyl collection, still do, haven't sold any yet, but toyed with just tossing them in the early CD age. But many are album packages that the CDs match. Still there's also many that haven't made it to CDs. Then there are those where I'm perfectly happy to part with, and I'll be selling them someday soon. And I confess I have few CDs that I've replaced with remaster version that I have sold already and still have yet to sell as well. I don't get too bent out of shape about it. And sometimes you just have to be selective about which ones you go for. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

That sucks, Back in the eary 90's I stated collecting prog CDs by all the big and not so big names:Genesis,Yes,ELP,Crimson,Floyd,VDGG,Gentle Giant,Tull,Deep Purple,Uriah Heep,Gong,Hillage,Nektar,Marillion and hundreds of others.Cost me a fortune.And since then, all of them,and then some, have been re-issued with bonus travcks,better sound,thick informative booklets some even feature bonus discs and video contents!
I have kept my originals and decided to boycott those re-issues.I'm happy the way the original CD runs sound, can't keep buying all of them twice.The only exception beign Nektar's Remember the Future's remastered CD wich is almost like a different album from the original CD mix.So in that very case I kept both versions,the old and new. ------------- What's gonna come out of my mouth is gonna come out of my soul."Skip Prokop" |

If it's a remaster that doesn't alter the instrumentation, track running order, or track selection but just bumps up the sound (with or without bonus tracks), the original gets sold. In all other cases I keep the original. |

The mix of the original CD release of that Nekar album was actually a screw up. I had that one. I understand where you're coming from. Another problem with a lot of the first issues of CDs for albums that came from the LP age is that they made directly from the LP masters when they should have been remastered for the CD format. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Yeah I have a few of those!!! Most notably Genesis' Seconds Out original direct from LP CD. I've convinced myself its worth £££ since the normally black background around the photo is silver/grey on my copy. Only one I've ever seen.

I gave away my original copy of FoaBP when the dvda version (with Nil Recurring) came out.It was a while after that the wife started complaining that she couldn't play it in the car anymore! Had to borrow the giveaway back and burn it.She's happy now.
I also had burnt copies of the older PT albums that I have nearly all replaced with the remasters.
Porcupine Tree are the only band I go to this extent with because the remix/remastered/5.1 versions are just so exquisitely good that its worth it. ------------- "There is a lot in this world to be tense and intense about" MJK |

That reminds me of the first edition of "Aqualung" by Tull back in the 80's. I was so exicited to get it on CD. However the result was HORRIBLE!! The hissing was louder than the music. A few years later it was re-issued thankfully. 100% improvement. Sometimes the re-issue is worth the bucks.

The biggest deal for me with this issue was Robert Fripp's solo masterpiece "Exposure". I had a tape of the original album, and then when I went to buy it on vinyl, Fripp had released the second edition, which although perhaps an improvement in sound had used various different takes, made edits and even removed parts and it just bugged me horribly - so much so that I had to go out and find a used copy of the original. I still can't tell whether the original was better, or whether I had just got used to it and didn't like change!
Now of course, I can't get the original version on cd or download, and am in the purgatory situation of living in the States while all my vinyl albums are stored in the UK... arrrgggghhh!

Don't know about PT but I'll coment about the topic you're talking about new and old versinos albums..
Since I was born in the 90's, I have no 'original' albums. I have all the remasters. Sometimes it's annoying. Since I bought In Rock and Fireball of Deep Purple, having like 8 bonus tracks and most of them are useless. I just wanna have the original tracks and that' it. Of course there are exceptions. Also TAAB, Aqualung and MITG have some useless bonus tracks. Good bonus tracks IMO: In Stand Up or Benefit or This Was, even though most of them are in Living in the Past compilation. |

I have almost a habit of always lookng on the used CD's first. So i've gotten many "Old CD Releases" very cheap through used CD stores & Swedish eBay!  That's a tip for you!  |

I have only remasters as far as classics are concerned and I would love to get my hands on some original copies but it's so rare to find them. I know I would regret selling the original copy in the scheme of things, and I think getting the remastered versions of cds you really like is a fantastic idea and putting the original copies away safe. -------------
