Good grief!  This thread took a left turn at stupidtown!  Wacko

Seriously, PA is where I come to get a good bit of my recommendations for metal.  I'd much rather read about metal from a progressive fan's perspective than from a metalhead's perspective.  That way, I'm more likely to find stuff that I'm into.  There are a good number of folks on this board who are very knowledgeable, and willing to point the way.... but there are also a few folks who detest anything remotely related to metal.  you just have to know who to trust.

How do you draw a line between dismissing and dissing an album ? Trashing an album may just indicate the level of dislike the reviewer felt for the music.
I've seen some very dismissive comments re " Split Enz eventual inclusion at PA. Klaatu. to me, is poorly represented by the Proggy pop they are often portrayed as. Ange is still a group for which I cannot understand why it is not included in the pantheon of prog greats.
But I have posted reviews on groups such as Nektar, VDGG, Eloy, where I stated simply that I didn't see what the big deal was. And if you can bear going through all my reviews and posts (even just the short ones), there have been a few times where I've voiced very strong negative opinions in regards to a band or even a genre. But these are all subjective. And they in no way should be regarded by any one as the last word. I like Sean Trane's reviews. But for the most part, I've found after a few disappointing purchases, that a lot of his recommendations don't bring as much satisfaction as his review would have left me to expect. And Vice-versa. But they are his view, again, subjective in nature, and subject to rebutal, debate discussion and if you want , dismissal.

As my classical music training is very limited, no longer will I give opinions on Symphonic groups. The RPI scene is  also off limits as I am not quite sure I understand the social, cultural & political conditions that bore such wonderful music. And being that as a 45 yr old fart, my metal daze are at least 2 decades old, I will not dare impugn prog metal with an ignorant overview.
I shall thus contain myself to raving about Ange, Klaatu, Split Enz, and Rush; as I know much about them, and thus , can be trusted to give the honest to goodness truth about how great they really are.

so to end this (dis)missive, here goes - if someone wants to review any album after one measly listen or ten, I DON'T CARE ! If somebody wants to review any album from a genre that they have yet to hear before or care for, I DON'T CARE ! If some soul has it in them to think they have something to say about any genre, band, or instrument that is included in PA, as long as they offer it as subjective opinion, I DON'T CARE !
Why, because as is clearly not stated upon the registration necessary to start posting at PA, no one is requires to be a recognized "expert" in order to be allowed to toss in their two cents worth. Why ? Because this is a fan site, a fun site, and sometimes a funny site.

that's fine.  my only concession is that they (whether expert or not) refrain from being a douche about not liking a band.....that is unnecessary and disprespectful to musicians.....sure you don't have to like the music, but there is no need to trash it......Wink  (it's just immature too)

great.  big help with your big pushy arrogance...

your post has not helped further the discussion in any shape or form and is, in fact a hindrance in threads like this...(except for acknowledging that everyone views "prog" differently, which I had stated earlier in the thread by way of subjectivity......)

I will take my silliness to elsewhere! Wacko

Going back to the original point, I'm not sure an extensive knowledge of a genre is even needed - either you think it's good, or you don't. I'm not sure that it matters much how many other people have similar approaches, although it is true you need to train your ear to certain things...as a Black Metal musician once said, "Our music is like opera". However, if you listen carefully to something and attempt to understand it, I think you can make a fair judgement without knowledge of similar music.
