Hella - Hold Your Horse Is

Also, Sleeping People supposedly sound like them.  I wouldn't know, though, I've never listened to them.  You can hear a full album for free on last.fm, though.

I have Homeboy EP, but not Hold Your Horse Is, is that a good place to start?

I don't know their EPs at all.  All I know is that Hold Your Horse Is is by far the best math rock CD I have ever heard (and I am not the only one who thinks this way).

It's 32 minutes of pure "I'm being brutally assaulted" ecstasy.  It bowled me over on first listen and it hasn't failed to do so on any listen since.

I agree with Pnoom's opinion on this disc. It's a chaotic joyride. (even though I prefer Mirrored and DC2)

Wonderful.  Great album.

Just listened to Mountains Became Machines - I like it.  Hopefully they find a new bass player soon.

Regarding Toby Driver:

I have all of the MotW discs as well as Kayo Dot.  I have heard of the Tartar Lamb cd but do not have it yet.

What are these other side projects (L...L...Library Loft and Spoonion)?

Fk no! Leaving yr Bodymap pwns!

As for other Driver's projects, they're too Avantish for me (but I liked some bits on both "Choirs..." and "Dowsing..."). I adore two songs from TIME OF ORCHIDS "Sarcast While" album, "All I ever Wish" and "Swarm of Hope", but I won't review it since I can't stand other tracks

As for new Kayo Dot - I've listened to it as long as I could Much Post-Rockish now. I think I gotta check the whole thing too

Spoonion was his first "band" which was more or less him doing a singer/songwriter type thing at a young age...he explains it on his site, and I believe all the songs from it are posted somewhere

they've managed to steal my lastfm charts recently! They're Indie-influenced on the one side (MUSE, RADIOHEAD, PLACEBO etc) and Modern Prog/Post-Rock (THE AMBER LIGHT, GAZPACHO, THE PINEAPPLE THIEF, SIGUR ROS, IMMANU EL, GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT etc) on the other. Check their MySpace, they have their best songs uploaded there IMO

Spoonion is probably pretty bad; it's Toby Driver while in highschool.

In the L..L..Library Loft is an amazing album; it's Toby Driver solo.  It has four tracks.  The first is probably the most intense piece of music I know.  It's positively awe-inspiring.  The last three are less intense (though Eptaceros is chilling), but still great.  Eptaceros and Lugubrious Library Loft are avant-garde classical type compositions, like a quieter Kayo Dot.  Brown Light Among Us is a really cool ambient piece, though it's a bit too long.

On the whole, Library Loft is a masterpiece, IMO.  Not as good as any of the Kayo works but not at all far behind either; it was almost a Kayo Dot release, but John Zorn convinced him to release it solo.  Definitely essential for Kayo Dot fans.

If you've heard the most recent Kayo Dot release, the Tartar Lamb release has a lot of similar violin work.  It's great, but it's completely removed from Kayo Dot.  It's like if Kayo Dot released a pure classical album.

HOLY CRAP! Usually super sludgy doomy bands are way to repetetive, adn monotonous for me, but I just got We wept the black ocean within' by A strom of light (featuring the guitarist for neurosis, Red sparrows...). It's brilliant! THe keyboards, mixed with the chanting like singing is just beautiful!
