I completely agree that Tool songs create a very deep emotional response, but it takes a good amount of patience to get in to. I am by no means a metalhead, so I think it's telling that one of the main descriptions I use for Toll's music is beautiful.
If you want to get in to Tool, but you find you are having trouble doing so, I'd suggest starting with another band altogether. A few years ago, when I was looking for new music, a friend suggested I listen to Orestes by A Perfect Circle. I put on my headphones and listened to the track and my eyes/ears were opened to a new level of music. I still didn't immediately like Tool. I listened to Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step for months before I went and bought Aenima. To this day I occasionally will discover something new in any random Tool song (APC too for that matter) that completely blows me away. Try this youtube video for Lateralus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY When I'm absolutly furious (This doesn't happen often. I'm a laid back guy.) I'll listen to Ticks and Leeches (it physically hurts Maynard's voicebox to sing this song) and then Aenima. About 5 minutes into Aenima, Maynard sings loud and clear over the quietly played intruments and it always seems to soothe the soul. |

They are subject matter stretches way beyond any grunge metal WHAT? Finish the sentence!!!
In fact, they're so artistic, their fans invent words! ZOMG!
No commas? A missing space? Spastic capitalization? NO PERIOD?!?!
Well done, only one error in this one!
Well, I c;mon'd and BROUGHT IT. That dust looks very inviting... (This post is just me being playful, I don't feel like discussion Tool.) |

I guess if you cannot get into Tool, then you must give up on music entirely. Wait a second, there are other artists out there...

I took the bait and picked up Lateralus after reading some of the reviews and yes, I have to agree with you. Nothing really all that special to me either. Oh well, you win some and you lose some.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like it at all, but it really isn't my cup of tea. That does not mean that I will stop listening to it. It will be kind of like Riverside and their third album, ok, but not great, but I will continue to listen, I don't give up that easy..............

Well I first listened to Tool years and years ago, but for about 2 year never heard them at all. The first Tool album I bought was 10 000 days, about a month after it was released. It took me about 6 months to actually 'get it', but once I got it, 10 000 days has become a very special album for me, something I will only listen to now and then, but I listen to it from start to end, with no interruptions, and by the end of the album, I feel like I've gone 'somewhere else' for the duration of the album.

Tool totally changed the way I listen to music. For the better. I can't say that for any other band with the exception of Tool.
Tool's 13 minute Salival version of "Push it", is just one of the reasons.. If you haven't heard this masterpiece, I highly recommend listening to it here- The instrumental portion starting at about the 9 minute mark is nothing short of mindblowing and I can listen to that segment for hours on end, and still want to hear it more. Intoxicating. http://youtube.com/watch?v=CqUYWLJ_0Ko And Tool's cover of Zeppelins "No Quarter" is the best cover I have ever heard-.. It can be heard here. Includes Alex Grey artwork, Tool's artist. http://youtube.com/watch?v=wAt2_H0F8Oo Nobody has ever covered a Led Zeppelin song close to that good. Tool did an amazing job of changing the song according to their own style, yet were still able to keep the mood of the original. Walking that fine line so effortlessly takes mega talent. And what can I say about the acoustic guitar progression starting at 5:41 , it's so beautiful. And then the guitars go to a twisty winding distorted sound that ends at 6:17.. And of course the gulping bass guitar sounds intertwined with the guitar there.. At 5:50 the bass makes a gulping sound, then at 5:52 it has a higher pitch as if it's coming up for air, then just a second later at 5:53 the bass guitar makes another gulping sound that all just fits in so well with the guitar making for beautiful textures that just makes me shake my head in amazement giving me goosebumps.. That entire sequence is some of the best music I have ever heard.. Tool knows how to make subtle sounds like that, sounds that most people wouldn't notice. But if you give them the time to listen to, the rewards are so tremendous.Pure Magic |

they are not big favorites of mine but they're undeniably excellent, and I'd think very appealing to those who like both heavy and complex music but haven't quite gotten fully into Prog

I think this will open some eyes to Tool.
This is the song structure to Lateralus.. Keep in mind that Tool incorporated the composition and musical structure of the song to the actual theme of the song.. How many bands do that? Notice later in the song he sings the phrase "spiral out".. In other words, the missing section earlier was intended. Intended because the whole theme of the song is to not stay in the spiral of the rules, but to "spiral out", away from the sequence confining us.. Brilliant ! It's explained right here in this video- http://youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY Keep in mind this is only one song.. Tool incorporates brilliance and such genius in many of their songs. They do everything for a reason, from their musical composition to their artwork to their lyrics. . This is not your everyday band to be sure |

that was an awesome link! very cool, I'm in the process of burning my lateralus cd to my computer so I can change the order of the track listing, I'm very intrigue. Personally never put quite that much thought into any music, but have had a tool obsession for the couple of years and it's not dying!
As for people not considering tool progressive, I don't understand why, because many of these people are porcupine tree fans(i find them similar in many ways), as so am I, and I would call tool waaay more progressive, they are pushing way more boundaries then pt. Most of the pt prog sound comes from the production, where as tools comes from the song writing and composition, I think people just like to initiate massive threads like this one by trying to knock a superior band such as tool, genesis or elp, just for the hell of it. they obviously enjoy arguing(I do!) People will always hate on the popular ones even if they are great! |

First post on this forum, so hello to everyone.
Interesting this Tool discussion. I come at it from a slightly different angle. I bought Lateralus based on a magazine review and thought it was naff. My tastes are very eclectic to say the least, this just sounded like lots of stuff I have listened to before except it lacked coherence. It lay gathering dust for a long time. On another forum they were raving about Tool and I have to admit I took a few cheap shots at the fanboys. Anyway, to cut along story short I met up with one of the fanboys in a hifi shoot out and guess what he brought to do the tests..........aggghhhh Lateralus.................the strange thing is, once he had gone, those repeated tracks must have sunk into my unconcious and a few days later I ended up listening to the album. I started to enjoy the album and was getting slightly annoyed that it was hooking me in. I just did not get what it was that was getting me into it and was actually trying to find fault and things not to like. I have given up now. Now I own Aenima and 10.000 days as well and have been to see them three times. When another album appears i will buy that........I'm an addict, I reckon Maynard uses some hypnosis techniques. Whats good about them.........haven't the faintest idea. I listen to Dream Theater (which I quite like) and have just started listening to Porcupine tree (fear of) which is Ok ish (Maybe it will grow, not kenn on In Absentia at all). Opeth........those growling vocals spoil it for me, I own ghost reveries and got rid of Blackwater park if that gives you any idea. |

Hello meat. Yeah, it took me quite a while to like Opeth. It's an acquired taste, and I think most prog metallers around this site will agree with me when I say that Opeth are one of the most creative progressive metal bands out there. Mikael Akerfeldt is such a great vocalist. His range is quite remarkable. Give those albums another chance, and you'll see what I mean.
Tool are awesome, don't you think? ... and welcome to the forums, n00b!!!!!! |

I bought Undertow after seeing Prison Sex every five minutes on MTV at the time. I liked it but to be honest I forgot about them until fairly recently when I gave Lateralus a go and loved it. Undertow is as good a place to start as any, it's fairly acessable compared to later stuff (imho).

I dont think I will ever like Opeth, I find the music too gloomy, oppressive and angry. This is not a complaint mind you, getting into a slanging match about music is as daft as someone arguing that coffee is better than tea......its all music, some you like, some you dont. Does get me wondering about my choice of music. The OP thought that Tool was more of a 'grunge' metal band which really means Nirvana (regardless to the 100s of other bands around at the time such as the Melvins, Mudhoney, bad brains, Tad, Minutemen, meat puppets etc). That sort of makes sense to me as a total Nirvana fan (although strangely people who dislike nirvana find it gloomy and angry which is ironic). |

That fits though, I dont like the mars Volta either. Tried a couple of albums and after many hours of listening I gave up. GSYBE does the same.
Yet I really like Aggaloch. Maybe it needs a sort of folky thing going on, a celtic twist of melancholy mixed with the strong metal riffing. The growling vocals just annoy me......and I have a lot of growling in my collection from bands like Sikth, Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cult of luna, Slayer, Machine Head, High on Fire etc. |
