Tortoises' standards was really weird, granted I've only given it two or three listens, so maybe it's not weird just different.

So what Agalloch album should I get first? I guess the Mantle, but you all made both of them ound really good,

The Mantle is one of the best albums I have ever heard. I didn't even need it to grow on me.

I seconded for The Mantle recommendation. Check newest EP as well - a bit different, but awesome AGALLOCH. Like my "Vorkoma" comparing to my "Diary of the Missed One"

Listening to The pirate ship quintets only EP right now, it rock almost too hard. Honestly, a band worth looking forward to in the future, highly recomended for fans of epic post rock.

There are a slew of post-metal or post-stoner bands about (Myspace is crawling with them), my favorites are:

Ahkmed
Meniscus
Llange
My Sleeping Karma
Behold the Arctopus
Ufomammut
OM
Earth
Sunn o)))
Mammatus
Titan
Earthless

Yeah, I know these bands bridge many styles, but they still have metal at their core......no matter how buried it may be in some.

Behold... the arctopus is an extremely technical tech metal band, they're not post in any sense of the word...

Ah well, you see it your way, I see it mine. And no, I do not wish to get into a
discussion of sub- and micro-  genres.

I merely made my suggestions because I thought some around here might
not have heard about these bands.

Slowly browsing through the ones I don't know. I couldn't help noticing, are we talking 'bout the Australian band Ahkmed? If so methinks persons here will be quite interested. IF one is located down in Melbourne you'll be able to catch these guys for next to nothing in the coming months.

Pelican...in space

Ahkmed take a Kraut/Space-rock approach to the “post-metal” sound we all know and love with Chicxulub, a collection of EPs recorded in 2003 and 2005. Imagine Hawkwind, in their cosmic, amphetamine-driven prime, joining forces with Isis, and you have a nearly dead-on description of their sound.

The opening track “Kirrae,” wonderfully explores the dynamics of loud and soft that post-rock and its derivatives are known for. The track goes from clean guitar jamming that seems high in the sky, then kicks in the distortion. Akhmed then go back to the softness, but when the amps are cranked again, they outdo themselves. The songs drifts off into spacey ambiance a pedal geek is sure to love. The band cuts some of the drone and ups the dexterity on the next track, “Ilanesia.” Though space-rock is mostly associated with bliss, it can convey fear as well. The muted wah in “T” creates an ominous claustrophobia. It’s also in this track where the vocals, a wispy drawl, are introduced. They are not in the forefront, like in Isis, and overall serve to add to the atmosphere of the album.

Akhmed’s songwriting is also more diverse than their classification would make them out to be. “Viceroy” sees the band successfully taking on a Fudge Tunnel-like tune, the most conventionally metal (though not by much) of the tracks. “Welcome Mat” finds them indulging in some Acid Mothers Temple spazz-outs. The fresh interpretation of a sound that some would already considered played-out makes Chicxulub worth it for any fan of heavy music.

Indeed, it is the same Ahkmed. I have their first ep and find it to be wonderful stuff.
Supposedly they are in the studio working on their first album.

You are indeed lucky if you get to see them, others like me can merely hope.   ;)

Sorry bout that, I didnt mean to come off as harsh.

Meniscus is really good, and have been recomended on this thread before, they're albums a high three star, low four star. The ending to the twenty minuete song is disapointing.

ze music of Boris differs between albums. they even write their band name in different cases to hint at what mode they're in on individual releases.

I'd recommend Flood and/or Feedbacker to people who primarily like post-rock

^good to know. how diferent do they go in exploring different sounds? is it Ulver esque type experiments or is it more subtle?

PS - that Myrrhman song is brilliant. i wish their myspace gave more info about them as a band m pretty curious.

No idea about best or most realised. Amplifier Worship and Sun Baked Snow Cave (with Merzbow) are my two run away favourites. Amp Worship is one of the few metal CDs I need nowadaisy, and SBSC is meditative love, more interesting than any metal-oriented drone around. (not sure about raga or minimalism for drones, it's not my area)

they're nothing like Ulver, but then again, they're nothing to do with subtlety either. a lot of their music is just beatdown in different palettes of psychedelic genres, or else bass drone, or else crusty garage hard blues idiot rock =)

on the other hand, "Pink" got the best press. maybe because it sounded like garage ACDC

i used the ulver comparison to see if they took a COMPLETELY different approach to one album rather than another  or if the differences between the albums were subtle.- (black metal/ambience electronica in ulver's case. ) so if i get one CD i have a relatively good idea of their overall sound or if the sounds on different discs are so different  buying one doesnt really give you a clear picture. I think i will check out Amp Worship and  Flood...
