This falls under the subjectivity of the listening experience. Again, nobody's mind works exactly alike, so while someone may hear something incredible/emotional, someone else may be completely bored.

So there's really no definitive answer for the emotionality of Dream Theater unless we devise a way to objectively measure and quantify emotion.

With this I heartfully agree...

I also agree with this....

If you had listened to as many clones as I have, probably you'd understand part of my love for the band.... no matter how I try, I still can't find one single prog-metal band that plays in their style that can match them either in skills or, more importantly, in the quality of the music, the melodies, the hooks...

-For God sake CHANGE THEIR SOUND FOR ONCE
-Put another producer
-Don't try to say "I'm so f**kin good" in every solo of every song
-try somethin dofferent, I dunno, Prog salsa or something

it works with porcupine tree (trying diffeent genres in each album)
maybe it ould work with DT

- Bands don't "change their sound" that radically anyway... When I hear the first five Genesis albums, I see minor changes but the band still sounds like the same band... The same here... Actually, few bands really change that much from album to album...
- Many people dislike DT for over-production. I don't think another producer might change anything. The band's decision are mostly Portnoy's and Petrucci's. Like it should be in non-commercial music, the nband makes the decisions. The producer just adds to the equation.
- I don't think they're trying to say "I'm so f**king good". I think they're trying to say "we f**king love to play this style that for many people sounds like if we're saying we're so f**king good and guess what, we are, and we f**king love to play like this and our fans love this style of f**king goodness"
- Very funny.

Porcupine Tree plays kind of Pink-Floydish in their first albums and more metallic in their last ones... I have them all by the way.. from Sunday to FOABP... and even if the styles are not really that similar (they've changed a little more than DT, i give you that), they still sound like the same band. Because that's what they are (or Wilson is, as he's the mastermind).

Just giving an opinion. And elaborating why I said this. DT doesn't need to change anything for the people that love DT's music, as PorcupineTree's fans prefer them to sound like PT, or Tool's fans love Tool when it sounds like Tool... Of course, trying to convince Magma fans of DT is more difficult.. but then again, why should DT try to get people that don't like them? It's not their mission to be universallly loved (no band's it is) and actually they would even generate more hate if more people loved them.

Try not getting angry because some fanboy is driving you crazy with his/her love for DT and listen what you like.

I would like to see another Falling Into Infinity. Now that they are extremely popular for a prog band, I believe they have a lot less restrictions or pressures from the label.

Of course, I think they over dramitized not being able to do what they want on Falling Into Infinity and their 'big struggle' but theres a lot of that in bands.

Falling Into Infinity contained some of their best work, but was enveloped with a lot of sub-par tracks.

Again, they don't seem to have too many restrictions, I would like to see something like that again, but better this time.

Sorry guys, we're not allowed to have opinions anymore. And since when does somebody need to be a instrumental virtuoso to have an opinion about one?

I guess Leonard Maltin isn't allowed to have negative opinions about movies because he's never made them.

And in the meantime, quit freaking out about negative opinions regarding bands you like. It doesn't/shouldn't affect you.

You missed the important point I was trying to make, which was:

This whole "If I were in Dream Theater, I would..." or, "Let's bash on Dream Theater" kind of thread is
vapid
1.lacking or having lost life, sharpness, or flavor; insipid; flat: vapid tea.
2.without liveliness or spirit; dull or tedious: a vapid party; vapid conversation.
insipid
1.without distinctive, interesting, or stimulating qualities; vapid: an insipid personality.
2.without sufficient taste to be pleasing, as food or drink; bland: a rather insipid soup.
and pointlessly inane
1.lacking sense, significance, or ideas; silly: inane questions.
2.empty; void.
.

It's most certainly not a case of not being allowed to have an opinion.  And it has even less to do with people's negative opinions.  Dream Theater certainly don't need me to defend them, their record speaks for itself.

^^Damn, man, you are . . . wow! I'm actually pretty impressed, it's the first time I've seen someone use big words to back their argument, and at the same time give the definition of the words to make sure that all of us idiots who don't worship Dream Theater can understand.

You have no idea of what I did or did not miss. I quoted a part of your post and gave what I thought about it. What you posted has nothing to do with what I quoted.

Falling into Infinity is a great album, I really don't know why some DT fans hate the album. Trial of Tears is among one of the great things they have written in their entire careers.

You know what they do not need..a song like "Prophets of War" on their next album...I love DT but that is a little ridiculous.

It's because they have heard Mike Portnoy bitch about that album time and time again and figure, 'Well, it must be true!' rather than actually listen to the thing and form an opinion of their own about it. (Just for the record, when being interviewed during the recording of that album, John Petrucci proclaimed it as their best yet, and while he says that every album, I truly think the only DT member who actually dislikes that album is Portnoy).

Trial of Tears, Hell's Kitchen and even Anna Lee are great tracks that really make the album special for me. I understand Portnoy's fustration during the making of the album, but looking back on the finished product . . . I still don't get what was supposed to be so horrible about it.

Probably because Portnoy is the "metalhead" of the band. He probably would've liked hollow years to have more brutal and metal lyrics LOL
